“Great place to stay”

This place was wonderful - pool, lovely rooms, lovely gardens and paths, plenty of space, great restaurant (black sticky rice and pancakes for breakfast - yum) and really nice and helpful staff

We stayed 5 nights and really enjoyed the place. Although located not very far from the busy streets of Ubud, the hotel itself is very quiet and relaxing. Staff is friendly.
Nice and clean swimming pool in a beautiful garden.

The room was big and clean, with a terrace from which we enjoyed the view on the rice fields.

A real good pick if you stay in Ubud.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with view on the rice fields.

We stayed here for 2 nights and although the setting of the hotel is just lovely the rooms are unfortunately very average. Our bedding was very musty and although the staff did change the bedding for us after a short while it was smelly again due to the pillows and mattress being very musty. The wardrobe was very musty and we could not hang our clothes up in it. I know there can be high humidity in Bali but other hotels did not smell like this. The bathroom was very old and shabby and is in serious need of an update.
The hotel is a little way out of Ubud... we were lucky enough to have a car as I would not have liked the long dark uphill walk back up from town late at night. I would recommend getting a taxi back just for the safety aspect.
The swimming pool area is lovely as are the views from the rooms but I think there are better hotels out there for the price. I know breakfast is included but it was pretty horrendous and we ended up going into Ubud to eat breakfast.
Overall, if this hotel had a bit of updating it could be really fabulous.

booked in here because i live in bali and knew that the rooms here looked nice. Won't ever bother again.
When we arrived we were shown to a family room - big but badly maintained, shabby and dark. We had a few bags but we had to carry them ourselves - the owner / manager was not interested in helping us.
About halfway through our quiet afternoon the ukelele orchestra practice started in the room above us - great footstomping music if you like that kind of thing... but i don't. So i asked if we could change rooms - oh no we are full was the reply. They weren't. I walked around and spotted that the really nice looking rooms with ricefield views i had thought we were getting into were still empty - so after a lot of persuading we moved into a much nicer room with a view - smaller ok but at least it was quiet and with a view. And yes i moved all the bags myself while the staff watched. I'd read that this was like staying with a nice family ?The most unhelpful people i've ever met in bali.
Breakfast was shocking. After we had sat down for about ten minutes i managed to get the waitress to bring a menu - it was like she was really inconvenienced.
I had been really looking forward to this place - had even recommended it to friends. It was bad. Great pool, great location - but they just didn't seem to care.

background: traveled with my partner for a week's stay in jan.'11.

transportation: hire a taxi from the airport or arrange with the hotel. we did the former though i forget how much it was.

first impressions: arrived around sunset. well-kept/landscaped gardens and nice pool. the staff were friendly enough (though i came to learn that it depends largely on who you get behind the desk). walked into the room and -- well...

room: melati consists of about 4-5 cottages with about 6-8 rooms in each (though i didn't count so i'm not sure how accurate that is honestly). your experience is largely going to be shaped by which one of these cottages you stay in because there is absolutely no consistency in the upkeep, amenities, or features in any of the rooms. supposedly the most updated cottage is the one closest to the outdoor dining area. however, on our first night, we got stuck with room #10, which is in a cottage set back by the rice fields. the room was small and dark. the bathroom was in serious need of an update. at night, the amphibians and other nocturnal animals outside made so much noise that it was difficult to sleep.

after one evening, we asked to be switched to another room. even though there was a large group there who had booked most of the rooms in advance, the staff was extremely accommodating with our request. they ended up moving us to two other rooms during the remainder of our stay (we stayed in 3 rooms total at melati): our 2nd room was a spacious, airy, second floor double with an awesome patio area -- MAJOR change from the first room. our 3rd room was an air-conditioned (thank goodness), first floor double. if not for the room changes, i would not have survived my week at melati. and thanks to the 2nd and 3rd rooms, i could've stayed at melati forever! the differences between the 3 rooms were like night and day!

pools/spa: clean, deep pool that's big enough to do laps.

food/drink: we only ate here for breakfast, which is complimentary with your stay. they have a small menu selection from which you choose three items. the balinese black rice is my favorite! otherwise, the other items are pretty mediocre.

staff: as mentioned, the staff are generally really kind and accommodating. from what my partner tells me, it's a family affair and most of the staff are either part of the owner's family or have worked there for years. there aren't many of them in total so it's easy to familiarize yourself and converse with them. they were really helpful resources and helped us figure out which performances in town to see or which bali attractions were worth visiting.

wifi: the modem is located around the dining area so you have to transport your laptop there. some rooms have access to the internet due to their proximity to the dining area.

tips:
- you can hire one of two drivers at melati - Wayan or Ketut - for day-long excursions. both are amazingly resourceful, knowledgeable, and friendly. it is worth a day trip to the rice terraces for views and/or to the blue lagoon for snorkeling.
- i am a city boy and prefer nature to remain outdoors. however, in a tropical climate like bali's, nature always finds a way to invade. be prepared for the occasional mosquito, gecko, roach or other creepy crawly to find its way into your room. it's inevitable.

final thoughts: staying at melati is like visiting relatives - they have a room for you, but don't expect much else. however, considering the price includes breakfast, a room, and pool access, i can't hate on melati too much.

Nice location in a rice paddy, 15 walking minutes from city center. restaurants around.

Big room, nice terrace. The bathroom had no window and was really smelling bad.

No shuttle service and no special attention from staff.

Like another reviewer, we got stolen shortly prior checking out.
We made the dumb mistake of not carrying all our cash with us and left our Euro and Sing Dol currencies in the room in one of our bags.
Definitely annoying, for a place which is not so great and quit pricy.
It was already not a good deal before, but when I factor the EUR 100 lost, it's a rip off...
look elsewhere, there are plenty of other accomodations, likely better.
