“Totally Wonderful”
Reviewed 3 April 2012

I went to Ubud with my friend on 30 Mar to 2 Apr 12 and stayed at Timor Cottage, Tanah Merah Resort and Gallery. It was a totally wonderful experience. The cottage was well maintained and clean. You will be waken up by the joyful sounds of birds and animals in the morning. Do remember to enjoy the infinity pool. The view was great! I have the luxury to have the infinity pool just steps from my cottage, I sat on my rocking chair and enjoy the morning and evening view from the infinity pool. It is a great place to rest and relax and do nothing.

The good was great! Remember to try the beefsteak! I think it is the best steak i have ever eaten!

We spent 3 days here at the end of our honeymoon. We were made to feel like we were staying with family. The food, the grounds and the service were all excellent. We will definately be going back.

My husband and I recently stayed at Tanah Merah Resort and Gallery and absolutely loved it! We stayed for 7 days originally in a Timor cottage which was lovely and had an amazing bathroom and sweet porch. Peter Bloch the owner kindly upgraded us to a Bali villa which was amazing! And had such a fantastic view! It was quiet (apart from the buliders making a new house by the pool area and another building near the lobby; but we are talking about one handeheld hammer not pnematic drills! And it wasn't at all that disturbing). Its in a fantastic location in a small village area near ubud amongst beautfil paddy fields and overlooking a gorge.

Some people here have said the breakfast was not that great?! I thought the breakfast and for that matter all the meals we had there were great! Not 5 star restaurant fare, but great tasty simple food and probably one of the best steaks I have ever had! The gallery and museum was fascinating and Peter is a very friendly and interesting guy who was always available if we needed anything. The staff were great- I have to say it was the staff that made our stay so special. They were so kind, funny and made you feel right at home and looked after. If we went backt o Ubud we would definately come back to Tanah Merah!

Room Tip: Pay a little more for a Bali villa but the Timor cottages are very nice.

My wife and I planned to join a busy Intrepid trip to Lombok, but before starting this adventure we wanted a place to relax, have a massage and enjoy some good food. The Tanah Merah Resort was perfect for that!
The location is about 10 minutes drive from the center of Ubud, but location is very quiet and the nature is absolutely beautiful. We stayed in the Timor Cottage, which was very big with a huge bad and beautiful Indonesian style bathroom. The food in the resort's restaurant was with the best food we had on our Indonesia trip.
If we ever go back to Bali, we will definitely stay in this place again!

The Tanah Merah was a real delight to stay in. Stayed for 2 nights in a beautiful room which was very spacious, with great amenities such as a large four poster bed, striking copper bath, indoor lounge area and own private outdoor courtyard. The room had really interesting paintings and furniture items, which in themselves were each worthy of viewing. We were told that the art was for sale and that most rooms each had different and individual art work; a welcome change to the usual mass- produced homogenous decorative features usually found in hotel rooms. The setting of the Tanah Merah was lovely; lush garden area, a breakfasting restaurant that was overlooking a stream/river and forest. Lots of great 'photo' spots. The breakfast menu was good and the breakfast food very tasty. The Tanah Merah has its own fab gallery which has fascinating items of furniture/sculptures/jewellery/art etc. It’s really a must to visit the gallery, if you stay at the Tanah Merah. The owner, Peter, was very welcoming and friendly and the Tanah Merah is evidently a real achievement on his part. The staff were helpful and efficient. We had the benefit of quite a reduced rate for our stay due to when we booked and the time of year; I expect that the normal standard rate would have been more expensive; therefore for me the stay definitely represented very good value. There were only two small downsides: the restaurant where we had dinner on the first night, was relatively expensive but the food was only ok. The other downside is the location of the Tanah Merah; its a little way outside of Ubud in a hilly location with a remote feel to it. We took taxis to get to and from the Tanah Merah- although its worth mentioning that I think the Tanah Merah had a shuttle bus that was available at specific times. However these small two factors didn't diminish the wonderful stay and the Tanah Merah definitely deserved my overall excellent rating.

Tanah merah is a wonderful retreat away from the hustle and bustle of tourist crowds. All the staff and host, Peter, we so welcoming and I couldn't fault anything. My short stay was perfection and I will be returning next year. Amazing views, amazing food and amazing service plus a fascinating gallery and museum showing pieces from through Indonesia. A must for all those interested in Balinese and Indonesian culture and history.

We booked one of Tanah Merah's studio apartments through agoda.com for half price. When we arrived, much to our surprise, we were shown to one of the villas overlooking the river valley instead. Peter, the owner, said it had become available and he thought we would like it better..... What was not to like! It was absolutely fabulous! The bathroom was filled with flowers, the king size beds comfortable (firm mattresses), the art work in the room and on the huge veranda wonderful, the view to die for, the grounds lush with plants, birds, and flowers - with art work everywhere.

Some reviewers complained about the breakfast. We stayed there in January 2012 and breakfast was good and plentiful. You had a choice of Asian and western style breakfasts. We mostly ended up with one of the western style choices which consisted of a plate of fresh fruit (pineapple, bananas, watermelon, papaya with slice of lime), a choice of 4 different fruit juices, 2 eggs any style, bacon, a small patty of fried potato, toast and croissant and coffee or tea. No complaints here!

As others have pointed out, the staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. And don't even consider turning down Peter's offer to show you his art collection. It rivals that of bigger and much more well-known museums.

I agree with some of the other reviewers. The restaurant is OK and the setting very nice, but there is much more variety in town and I would definitely recommend eating in Ubud. The hotel is about a 10 minute ride from Ubud, but you can always ask one of the staff members to drive you into town during the day. And the drive is gorgeous! In exchange for the relative remoteness (which does include early morning rooster wake up calls), you'll find yourself in a little slice of paradise.

Note: Tanah Merah has service to and from Denpasar airport for $35. I used a driver who had picked me up at Denpasar when I arrived and stayed in a hotel in Ubud for a couple of days before moving to Tanah Merah. The ride from the airport to Ubud was $22.00. He charged $27.00 for the ride from Tanah Merah back to the airport.

Room Tip: The older villas overlooking the river valley have the best views.
