I spent two weeks at Rumah Jempiring in July, 2016. Its location was excellent, on the quiet footpath behind the Bintang Supermarket, less than a 30 minute walk from Ubud Center. You can walk to Intuitive Flow yoga studio and a number of restaurants, including vegan, vegetarian and raw cafes. The low-key Sedona Spa is a 15 minute walk with very good and inexpensive massages.
Rumah Jempiring itself is very comfortable. The house manager and housekeeper were kind and accommodating. Breakfasts were fresh cooked daily—and delicious—and I was very happy that two of the breakfast choices were vegan.
There was one problem: for 5 days of my two-week stay, the pool pump/filtering system was broken and the pool water was not being cleaned. The pool was not swimmable during this time; I took a picture showing debris floating in the water. I know the house manager attempted to have the pool equipment repaired, to no avail. I was hugely disappointed—I specifically sought a rental with a pool so I could swim daily and I undoubtedly paid a higher rate because the house had a pool. I wrote to the owner and described my disappointment and respectfully asked for a refund of $150 —out of a rental fee of nearly $1,500—because I had been unable to use the pool.
I was shocked at the owner’s tirade of a response. She accused me of trying to “exhort [sic] money” from her and told me that I was “shabby” to request a refund. She accused me of trying to “sabotage our hard work.” Her rant continued; she said, “How petty and narcissistic of you to feel that you deserve a refund because you couldn’t use your pool for a couple of days.” Actually, I believed then and still believe that my request for a small refund was reasonable: I had paid for a pool I couldn’t use (although the owner said I should have swum in the pool anyway).
I was horrified by the owner’s insults and accusations. (She could have just said no without calling me names!) She ended my stay at Rumah Jempiring on a sad and disturbing note. I have copies of this correspondence and pictures of the pool water. I would not stay at Rumah Jempiring again; there are many other places to choose from in the same area, although they are not as well advertised.
We stayed in Rumah Jempiring for a week in May while other family members stayed in Villa Semua Suka, only a minute away.
The location is excellent being close to the Bintang supermarket, many restaurants and Intuitive Flow yoga - yet still quiet and secluded.
The bungalow is decorated in Balinese style with modern conveniences including air-conditioning and a well equipped kitchen. Everything is clean and well maintained.
We had delicious breakfasts everday with our extended group at Villa Semua Suka, which were a highlight.
The staff of both properties take great pride in their work and go out of their way to assist. It was great to see Made Pia, Ketut, Dayu and Ratna again after our stay in Hyacinth House for a month last year.
We will be back.
This is the second time we have stayed in Barbara and Henry's Villas, and the first time in Gardenia House. Barbara's kind assistance in helping us to rearrange our travel as a result of the July volcano eruption was greatly appreciated. The standard of the villa was absolutely first class. Spotlessly clean and extremely comfortable. The house staff, Pia and Dayu, our driver Blue and Wayan (the pool attendant) were attentive and gracious and became our friends during our stay. We are looking forward to our next visit to this beautiful place.

I am the first guest to stay at Rumah Jempiring and as I have stayed at 2 of the other accomodations owned by Barb & Henry I knew I was in for a treat. The villa exceeded all my expectations. Private and secure with a beautiful garden. My own kitchen. Wi-fi is constant and reliable. The bed is sooo comfortable and the linens are of high quality. Being a short walk to Bintang supermarket, atm and a coffee shop was so convenient. The beautiful and ever smiling Dayu who would greet me every morning and go about her job of cleaning the villa made my stay complete. Having my own pool which was tended to regularly was magical and the lighting at night beckons you in.
I have found my paradise in Ubud and cant wait to return.
Thankyou Barb & Henry for once again offering an outstanding accomodation in Penestatan.
