This is supposed to be one of Ubud's quintessential dining experiences but it greatly disappoints. Dim lighting and when we were there no background music gave it all the ambience of a warehouse populated by seating areas in mosquito infested nooks. The famed duck was poor also being cold in one case & fried to a fleshless crisp in the other all accompanied by lack lustre sauces. I know Ubud dining well but this place is a huge tourist trap that delivers poor value. Go elsewhere & do not be seduced by an outdated reputation.

The original crispy duck place in Ubud. It is highly recommended for its food however it is just average. The duck is dry & small. They also have smoked duck however it has to be ordered 1 day in advance so never got to try it. Prices are rather steep even for Bali.

Main draw would actually be the overall decor & environment. Restaurant is placed by the rice fields & made of several tastefully decorated alfresco style dining areas. It is rather romantic to sit & enjoy the breeze while you hear the soft Balinese music in the background. This in itself is a good reason to give this place a try.

Service however is very poor. They are not like the typical friendly service commonly found all around Bali. As the place is huge getting their attention itself is a trouble. Rather a shame considering how lovely the place looks & the steep prices.

The restaurant was huge and relatively empty when we visited around 11.30am (they open at 11am). We chose to be seated on the 2nd floor overlooking the paddy field. The staff were very attentive and we had no problems getting their attention as we were the only guests on the 2nd floor.

We both had the crispy duck which was delicious! It was very flavorful and the accompanying side dishes of vegetables and chilli sauce went very well with duck. Although the meal was considered much more expensive than other restaurants in Ubud, we felt that the portions were sufficient and the duck was really delicious. We had to use our hands to enjoy the duck but this was not an issue as there are washrooms in the restaurant where you can wash your hands.

It is definitely worth a try. We had some reservations initially after reading the reviews on tripadvisor but bebek bengil exceeded our expectations! This was one of our favourite meals during our trip to Bali.

The building and gardens are truly beautiful, but the service is impersonal, and the meals we had were surprisingly poor.
