“Best Hotel So Far”
Reviewed 29 January 2014

What I really like about this hotel is The Restaurant near by the pool. I can sit there for hours and doing nothing. I have stayed in this hotel many many times and it's consistently good. You'll never get this kind of experience in other hotels. The location is also perfect, near by the Tugu Malang and next by the Major Office. One time i celebrate the New Years Eve right in front of the Major Office and people singing their Local Football Club Songs. Never forget that moment. Maybe the best New Years Eve I've ever had. Best Hotel so far. Uuuu I really miss this hotel.

Room Tip: If you want peace and quiet, ask for the theme room far from the pool, like Raden Saleh Room or Baba...

I stayed here 4 nights and had a wonderful experience at this more culturally grounded Javanese hotel. The staff are wonderful and very welcoming, helpful (told me where I could go to find a sim card for my cell phone) and "real". The room was on the small side (basic standard room) and the window just looked to a wall, but had many nice touches - fresh flowers, a lovely bath (they even provide bath bubbles!). The internet and TV service is great. Unlike other hotels I'm staying on during this trip - they provided access to BBC and CNN, nice. Free newspapers in the morning and the afternoon tea w/ traditional snacks were great. Breakfast is not included, but that is o.k., the breakfast options are lovely. I would particularly recommend that coconut oatmeal! YUM! I had a couple of other meals here too and they were good. The grounds of the hotel are magical - inside and out. Unfortunately I didn't have time for a tour, but just wandering around is lovely. I had the welcoming complimentary massage (wonderful from Dini I think it was) and then a 1 HR Javanese massage (that was good - but think the other woman was better.) Others have said there is some need for painting and the pool chairs need to be re-covered - ya sure, but nothing major! I would def. recommend this place!

This hotel is a story and a destination in itself. A rambling place with many nooks and corners, it is individual and engaging. Not just a place to stay but a place to enjoy art and history (and good food). We were welcomed with enthusiasm when we arrived and were very well looked after thoughout our stay. We had Room 106 on the ground floor, with shutters opening onto the central pool. Our part was more like a sensational B&B than a luxury hotel. But when we explored we discovered all sorts of different spaces: a chinese temple, a Gaudi inspired courtyard, dramatic corridors, a rooftop spa, elegant reception rooms and museum quality exhibits and antiques. We loved the elegant restaurant and enjoyed the free afternoon teas on the first floor deck overlooking the central square (leafy roundabout).Malang is an interesting city and the Tugu Hotel gives you a great excuse to visit!

Tugu Malang is not a hotel. It is a fabulous gallery of the most beautiful Indonesian and Chinese antiques with 40-something rooms, a great restaurant and attentive staff added on. Malang still has a lot of the Dutch influence and is completely unspoilt. Great to walk around, ride the becaks (rickshaws), explore genuine antique shops with integrity. The Tugu group is known to us but (having stayed in Tugu Bali and Tugu Lombok with similar results) but Malang is a wonderful discovery.

Room Tip: Simple. Ask the staff welcoming you to see a few rooms - they will happily give you the choice is so...

We stayed in this hotel on our first night in Java coming from Surabaya. The hotel is a peaceful gem in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city. Dinner and breakfast was delicious (best ones we had during our stay in Java). Try the rijssttafel for dinner it's divine and for breakfast you have a huge menu to chose from. Rooms are spacious and nicely decorated. Staff is very nice and accommodating (they gave us a tour through the hotel showing us the presidential suite which is closed for public normally). You also get a free 15 minute welcome massage which was heavenly after the flight.
Unfortunately we were woken very early by a manifestation on the square next to the hotel but not their fault of course.
Do walk around through the hotel, it's amazing the collection of art it contains, it's practically a museum in itself.
A must try hotel if ever in the neighbourhood!

Room Tip: Try to get a room away from the street so you can have a decent night sleep

We stayed in this wonderful hotel around New Year: a real piece of art! An amazing collection of Javanase and Peranakan Chinese art, culture and history displayed in every corner of the hotel.
Most memmorable was Johnny who welcomed us upon arrival, and who demonstrated how personal attention and attentiveness can have such a profound impression on hotel guests. Very well done! Also the mixed Indonesian, Asian and Western cuisine at the restaurant Melati was excellent, and enjoyed our New Year's Eve with some of the many wines in their cellar. And then there were the huge fireworks on the central square in front of the hotel that went on for at least one hour. When we returned to our rooms we just witnessed the hotel and kitchen staff throwing each other into the swimming pool: a well deserved cooldown after the hard work and trul memorable New Year's Eve in Malang.

This hotel is very memorable. There are so many different areas to explore, you could walk around the grounds for at least an hour. My husband and I took a cooking class while we were staying at the hotel and it was a lot of fun. The staff are so friendly and made it a great experience. The food is good and the rooms are very good, comfortable and nicely decorated. I would recommend it for a stay in Malang.
