“We got the smelly room”
Reviewed 21 June 2013

Our Superior room was located in the underground rooms beneath the main common area overlooking the stream below. While spacious with high ceilings, none of the Superior rooms have any windows. Our room had a foul stale smell. The Superior rooms are the lowest grade rooms in the complex so I don’t know what they are superior to, we were already in the basement. The bed was a large king sized bed with foam mattress. The floor was polished tile & cold on the feet. There was tea & coffee facilities. A 68 cm CRT TV with local channels. The bathroom although appeared clean needed some disinfectant as the smell of stale water was hideous. My theory was the last person urinated but didn’t flush the toilet & the room had remained unoccupied for a week or more. Although the water pressure in the shower was strong. As previously mentioned by another reviewer the towels here were thin & pretty old.

The wi-fi signal from the underground Superior rooms was very weak to non-existent. Really only accessible from the common area around the reception, restaurant or pool.

The hotel common areas are beautiful & scattered with moss covered Hindu statues & idols which lead to the restaurant area which has indoor, covered & open tables which had a nice atmosphere in the evening. There isn’t much space to walk around but the hotel is lush with plants & has an exotic feel, I think this is the best overall aspect of the hotel. We found this place on a hotel booking website priced as a mid-range hotel but did not realise it was in the middle of nowhere nor did its description really convey this.

Like previous reviewers have mentioned, Ubud Hotel & Villas is located inside a quiet suburban area next door to a Catholic convent for nuns. There definitely were no young virgins here, I looked. The main road is Jalan Bendungan Sigura-Gura, about 5 mins walk away but it’s mostly local cheap fare. If you’re looking to explore the neighbourhood on foot, the largest institution around is the University Brawijaya which is about 20 mins walk away where taxis can be found. The train station is a fair way about 7kms & not really possible to walk to easily.

With the slow wifi, dank smelly basement rooms & isolated location from the city we decided to leave the next day for the Merbabu Guest House across town. No doubt these are first world pains but its a buyers market these days.

A nice hotel with traditional architecture combined with good facilities and cozy rooms. The location is not far from the heart of the city so it is easy to reach and has a quiet surrounding that guarantee a sound sleep. Delicious food are provided for breakfast.

Very good place to stay. Superb breakfast. Good service by staff. The problem is there are 3 floors ( down) and if your room is on the 3rd floor ( down) walking up and down could be a problem. The reception is at the top floor. No lift service. Although they claim there is wi-fi, unfortunately you will only know that wi-fi is only at the reception area. We were at the 3rd floor and there is no wi-fi there yet. Overall good service throughout. Another item to remember is that the shops are located about 1.5 km away. Walking out could be a problem as there are no street lights. Good if you want to completely relax as no external noise will disturb you.

if you want to feel like having a holiday in bali but live around java, don't worry, this hotel can give you the exact feeling!! we arrived quite late so we didn't really pay attention of the surrounding on our first night. we ordered meals but it was served warm instead of hot. it was quite disappointing because we are the only guest at the restaurant and they still can't serve it right. during our stay, never once they served the food hot, even after we complaint about it! the the next morning i realized that our Superior room doesn't have window, which is quite frightening! so we asked to move room but only to be informed that all superior room are the same. however the receptionist was nice enough to upgrade our room to a deluxe room with extra charge. the room was beautiful with a view straight to the swimming pool and the river. The window can be opened and we did open it to enjoy the cool weather of the city. the room has hangers but no closed cabinet. a drawer and glass shelf which we can't see the purpose. flat tv with only local channel, no tea and coffee maker, another disappointing point, no mini bar, and the water is a bit of a problem as no hot water for a while. toiletry includes tooth paste and brush, soap and shampoo with a tired looking towel. the hotel provided a transport for our tour that charge 250000 rupiah for 6 hours. extra hour will be charged at 60000 rupiah. we informed the driver about places we wish to visit and he was helpful enough to accommodate. the staff are friendly but not informative. it's another disappointing point as the hotel has the beauty of Bali but not the helpful staff, although a few of them are really make our holiday worth it. the swimming pool is a real bonus and you can get the towel from the housekeeping. we really enjoy our holiday just by being at the swimming pool and listen to the sounds of the river. it is recommended for a quiet and relaxing holiday.

Room Tip: deluxe with no balcony is the best value so far. it makes your room bright during day time whilst yo...

This hotel has a beautiful setting along a river, reminded me of Ubud, Bali...but we didn't enjoy our stay. The room was very musty and opened onto the restaurant (which meant we were an attraction every time the door opened). We tolerated the band playing in the evening (only until 10) but then were woken up at 6am by Balinese gamelan music played way too loudly over the restaurant sound system.
The breakfast was mediocre and really not up to standard for the price they are asking.
We had booked two days over the internet, and decided to leave after the first night. The reception staff were not very friendly after we told them of our decision to leave (even though we were still paying for the second night).
I wouldn't stay here again, as there are better options in Malang.

Room Tip: Don't get a room that opens onto the restaurant.

hen we heard Ubud, we just think it's in Bali. But Ubud in Malang city, that's different story for Ubud Hotel & Resort. That's why we decided to stay 1 night in Deluxe River View with price USD33 (about IDR330.000) plus 1 extra beed for USD12.5 (about IDR 125000) because we have additional 1 adult person. It means we also get breakfast for 3 pax. Well, Bali is Bali
and Malang is Malang, but surprisingly Hotel use Ubud name to reflect Bali's atmosphere in it's design. And yes, it's catch our attention when we enter the lobby, actually it's 4th floor, already we can found Bali signature's on it, and even the receptionist wear Balis's dress. Make us smile when they greeting us.

In 4th floor is mostly Nakula & Sadewa room and 1 small Kintamani pool (actually we think it's to small to use) but the design give us feeling we indeed in most hotel we can find in Bali

ROOM :
Actually we try to book Nakula & Sadewa room on 4th floor, which is in lobby area. Due we travel with older people we read some review that stairs to go down below is to steep to use. Probably a way to efficient use of space but we thinks the owner should renovate the stairs design in the future. But all room is fully booked ad we got deluxe river view (with balcony) on 2nd floor. That's means 2 level below the lobby area. So our 78 old father did test the stairs and his healty heart too and yes he must be carefully if not want to slip off. Beware also if bring little children suppose their small feet may not reach each ladder in proper position. Rooms is good, nice and clean and from balcony we can see pool and splashing sound of water from the
small river. Very unique scenery. But for deluxe room we think the bed size is small. Room facility include independent AC, LCD TV Cable with good cable reception and also tea/cofee complimentary water boiler. Bathroom with Hot/Cold shower provided hard water pressure, toilet and wash basin. We think Superior and Deluxe room size is not too diferent, only differ in balcony for deluxe room

STAFF :
Staff is very helpful. The receptionist help us check in and looks for alternative room for twin bed (as our first preferable), regretly it's fully booked and we must accomodate with kingsize.
Then concierge help us bring our luggange down to 2nd floor. Thanks him we can not imagine if must bring heavy things across the stairs. The same is when we check out from hotel.
Also they quickly set up the extra bed on the floor and give extra clean bedsheet and towels.

Facilty:
We have browsing several hotels before we decided to stay at Ubud. We think this is the most affordable budget hotel, judging it's price we can get the pool for our childrens spend the day. Offcourse we can get more cheaper hotel in Malang but less facility in swimming pool. Swimming pool is quite big in 1st floor (most lower), again from 2nd floor to 1st floor
we must carefully go down on steep ladder. But the swimming pool is very great in the middle of small garden. 1 big deep pool, 1 small jacuzzi alike pool and 1 small children pool (around 50 cm deep) Very safe for children to play but watchout because they may move to deep pool easily. And as like other hotel's swimming pool they provide extra towels to use. A small platform in the garden with chair and table available while we can order food and drink to serve.

The Restaurant :
Breakfast taste is average with ordinary Indonesian choice of food, like soup and fried/rice noodle.

LOCATION :
Location is not to good, not in the center of Malang city but it is in residence area near some big universities/campus in Malang, like ITN and UNIBRAW. A rather difficult to find it's street name because the area have several other similar names like Bendungan Sigura-Gura and also its location is in small street rather in the side of big street. But a direction signboard can easily help to find this hotel. Here is the map location to help find it easily : S7 57.576 E112 36.319. If we pass the main Bendungan Sigura-Gura street there is plenty of small restaurant ('depot') with many food menu to choose. Also about 2 KM on jalan Veteran, there is mall Malang Town Square (MATOS) and go to 4th floor where we can find food market (Pujasera) with plenty food menu selection.

CONCLUSION:
This is good budget hotel with good facility, that's include room amenities and swimming pool. Very recommended for traveller with family especially with children for short stay or transit time in Malang city, which is they can spend the day play around the pool. Also to enjoy unique Bali atmosphere but infact you are in Malang is a plus. But if swimming pool is not a big deal for you then we think another budget hotel with cheaper price is avalaible in Malang. Pls consider if bring (too) older people when stay, they may not comfortable to walk climb up/down and we suggest (prefer) at least to stay at lobby (4th) level or in 3rd floor (please contact Hotel for more detail).

Room Tip: Prefer for 4th or 3rd floor if bring older people to avoid go up and down on steep stairs. Deluxe ro...
