You have to be there to experience an immense feeling of ultimate astonishment, amazement.
This National Park covers the caldera of Tengger, which was caused by an globally disastrous volcanic eruption that had left a huge sand of sea of more than 50,000 hectares, including in it 5 new mountains : Mount Bromo, Mt. Batok, Mt. Kursi, Mt. Watangan and Mt. Widodaren.
Mt. Bromo is the most famous and is an active volcano. Visitors can climb 262 stair steps to reach the rim of Mt. Bromo’s crater.
It is advisable to start one’s visit with a four-wheel drive rented jeep from one of so many accomodations around the park, around 2:30-3am with a trip to Mt. Penanjakan at the caldera rim to experience a wonderful view of sunrise.
Then continue to visit Mt. Bromo, which can be reached from the allocated parking space by foot or horse ride, which is more adviced. Anyone should keep in mind, that the 262-steps climb to Mt. Bromo’s crater rim is quite an effort, and a horse ride may help preserve one’s energy by avoiding to cover the distance from the parking space to the bottom of stair.
A visit to the caldera’s savanna and the “whispering sea of sand” will be a heart fulfilling ending of one’s visit to this National Park.

The locals will scam you every way they can. They stop you and force you to hire their 4WD vehicles. The town nearby is full of locals trying to rip you off. We stayed at a terrible unfriendly place as well. My advice is forget it.
