If you:

- want to shop and buy batik
- want to know how batik is made
- see the process and view samples
- eat dark chocolate and buy coffee as gifts
- want the photo opportunity of seeing the workers in action

then don't miss this...

The "kampung batik" (a neighborhood where most of the population produce batik) is one enjoyable romp if you visit Solo.

I think you also get a better/special price if you buy batik here.

We have batik at home, but it is only here in Indonesia, and more so in Surakarta that I saw the different types of batik - printed, stamped, hand-made etc. and not even on the usual cotton I associate with it. Coupled with old-style, traditional designs as well as the adaption to more "modern" batik versions, I enjoyed my visit here.

Putra Laweyan though was the only place I managed to visit due to the very tight schedule we had to follow as we had to go back to Yogyakarta. There are other makers in this area and it would have been interesting to see their products and know about their history. The shop at Putra Laweyan had other items on offer such as coffee and chocolate (and others). The chocs were quite rich and dark too. Yummy.

if you stroll around Laweyan you will find a lot of nice original batik shops, but to get them you should go more south to the back of the galleries on the main street, cause many of those galleries do not have own production, they just sell and get most of their stuff on commission from the producers which are low profile people and selling to very reasonable prices...therefore we went away from the busy main street in the small gangs where you can find still great handmade pieces with low prices, and you can bargain, at least 30 % will be reducted, if not even more...take care of the hookers, a lot of them hanging around there hunting for commission, if they guide you to a shop they will get their share of the cake...also be aware that some of the sellers telling you it´s batik tulis, which is handmade, but it´s not, they selling printed batik to people who are not familiar with the quality....anyway you will get nice pieces to moderate prices, just take your time and explore Laweyan Batik Village...

A place not to be missed if you like to understand the process of batik making. The management and staffs are friendly people. This is also a good location for photographer to capture your candid shots. (2013 Nusantara Photo Club Annual Outing in Solo)
