“Top notch budget homestay or high end rooms”
Reviewed 13 April 2014

We stayed in the cheapest rooms they had (less than $20 usd/night), and they were fine.

Where this hotel shines is it's property.
Old buildings oozing javanese decor and antique charm, the common areas are some of the best you will find on all of Java.

How about a javanese music room, where you can see players practicing for free?
A perfect courtyard with birds chirping, palm trees and a clean freshwater pool?
Some of the friendliest staff in Asia.
A tower to sit at the top, purely for relaxation.

The rooms definitely need some work, but for the price paid, I would argue this is one of if not the winner of, "best value room in South East Asia".

Don't expect much from you room, stay for the grounds and hotel.

Stayed here for 10 days. Beautiful communal sitting areas and wonderful, relaxed atmosphere. The staff are super helpful and kind and really look after their guests well. They have traditional Javanese music practice - gamelan - three times a week on their own beautiful set of instruments. You can also organise lessons on the instruments. Bedrooms are quite large. The bathrooms are Javanese style so you need to use the scoop to flush the toilet which works fine.

Stayed here for a few days and the exterior of the place is nice and peaceful however the rooms need more attention. The few things I can recommend is perhaps include a sink and tap somewhere so guest could wash hands, and include more shower heads, and the bathroom does not have a flash, tried using the bucket but was not successful. Otherwise it is nice and staff are good. At times they play traditional Javanese music , it's nice to sit and watch :) thanks to the lady who wanted to offer me her seat and and ask if I had already eaten very kind of her :).

Hotel is right in the centre. It is great place to spend some time and have a rest. Rooms are clean and have windows located to the garden or to the courtyard. There are a lot of historical things which are exhibited every where so you can feel like you are staying in a museum. There is a tower in the middle of hotel and it´s nice place for breakfast. Stuff is very friendly. We left our baggages the last days and wait there for a train until the midnight. Hotel chief was very friendly and adviced much smart things about our next travel, thank you! :-)

Cakra homestay is a beautiful homestay in solo. The staff is very helpfull and we booked 2 nice tours there. Riding bicycle in the surroudings was great and the tour to the temples too. The swimmingpool is very nice also.

But the rooms are very poor. There are no hotwater showers or even a sink. The toilet you have to flush by yourself. Breakfast consist of toasted brad with jam. But when you pay something extra the staff will buy something for you.

The property is beautiful, there's a pool (I never used it because it didn't look that clean), ornate halls, and a gamelan room where musicians sometimes practice, which is an added perk. There is free tea and coffee all the time, but the breakfast is not much. There is a nice tower in the middle of the property from which you can see all around. Location is very central, walking distance from most sites. Paul wahyu, a guide who works with them, is very helpful and knowledgeable, but I found the rest of the staff to be not particularly forthcoming or helpful.

This homestay is located in a very Central part of Solo City (Surakarta). Certainly within walking distance--or very most a short becak ride to anywhere in the City. However, this is a GREAT place to learn Javanese Culture--especially gamelan music. You can "rent" the gamelan for a private lesson (a private teacher from Institut Seni costs about Rp 100,000 for an hour)--or if you stay at the homestay they will let you use and or listen to the gamelan.

Any other activities or learning experiences can be arranged on site.
