“The only Erotic temple of S.E.A”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 June 2014 via mobile

Not many people knows about Sukuh Temple. Even some of the local inhabitants of Yogyakarta do not know the existence of this temple. It is due to its location, hidden on the slopes of Lawu Mountain of more than a thousand meters above the sea level. To get there you need to rent a car as public transportation is limited.
This temple looks more like a Mayan Pyramid from Latin America. Could there be any possiblility of two different tribes in two different continents constructing buildings with almost the same shape and architecture? Or was there any influence from Mayan in the process of Sukuh’s construction?
There are still many mysteries ando questions about Sukuh Temple. This was the last of a beautiful ancient architecture of the last temple built in Java. To look around for an answer to a story which could traces back the pieces of ancient history evidences will be a challenging and un-forgetful experience.
Sukuh temple has a distinctive artifacts & reliefs where life before birth and sexual education are its main theme. Its main monument is a simple pyramid structure with reliefs and statues in front of it, including three tortoises with flattened shells and a male figure grasping his penis. Sadly one statue has been removed. A giant 1.82 m (6 ft) high of lingga (phallus) with four balls, representing penile incisions, was one of the statues that has been relocated to the National Museum of Indonesia.

“Not a typical temple”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2014

This temple is located in the slope of the mountain. Didnt seem to have access to public transportation system. Entrance fee is super cheap, like 4k IDR per person So, if you decide to go there ( you have to), better to rent a car from downtown solo. Try to avoid going there after 2pm, foggy and (might be) rainy. You may also want to go to the tea plantation, like 20 mins drive. There is a nice cafe too at the plantation (forget the name).

“Well preserved cultural historical site”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 April 2014

Sukuh temple is located in karanganyar regency which is near to my family's residence, the site is unique as the temple is resembling temples of mayan culture. Also this temple is famous with erotic carving which resembles fertility. If you love historical site, it is a worthy place to visit. Additionally....the view is spectacular
