We stayed there for 4 nights based on recommendations by local relatives. The best part of this hotel is its location, which is conveniently located near an relatively upscale shopping mall (with Sogo department store).

I brought my swimwear but decided not to swim as there were only a few swimmers and all of them are men.

Well, well, well, what can we say about Surabaya and its hotels? First, when going to Surabaya you probably are going for business, as there is not too much other stuff to do there except going for a day-trip view of Mount Bromo. So, if you have to go, you are left with a selection of five "5-star" hotel, i.e. the Sheraton, the Marriott, the Oriental, the Hyatt (all located in the same central area, but the Hyatt is slightly further from the center), and the Shangri-La which is completely outside the center. The Sheraton is located just above Surabaya’s main shopping mall, which is a big advantage, as you have direct access from the lobby. After staying 8 weeks at Sheraton Surabaya, I can tell you that it fits in the average hotel offer you get there; I visited the rooms in all of the 5 hotels listed above. The Sheraton was built 10 years ago, and needs some refreshing. With SPG Platinum status, we were given a room upgrade to a corner suite, which are really two rooms merged into one. It includes 2 bathrooms, a separate sitting area with 1 TV, and in the other room, a king bed and one more TV, as well as a second bathroom. Staff were pleasant and knew us after we had been there for 8 weeks and tried to address our needs. The executive floor has a lounge where the food is not really adapted to European taste, but where again staff are serving you the best they can; service is acceptable without being exceptional. The restaurants at the Sheraton are probably the worst selection of all luxury hotels in Surabaya, as it only has a Chinese (did not try this one) and an international (named Bromo after the volcano at Mount Bromo, a site worth a visit if you are in Surabaya – it’s about 2-3 hours drive depending from which side you want to go). The Bromo restaurant has a traditional buffet where again, the food is more tailored to the taste of Indonesian people rather than anything else. The only dishes I found to my taste were the tomato soup and the selection of pasta they have; I also found when ordering the same dishes on two different days, that quality and taste were inconsistent. I checked out of the hotel several times in 8 weeks, and as SPG replaced their billing/accounting software across the Asian region, we had huge problems having the correct charges billed, staff were unable to reverse incorrect charges, and SPG points credits were 1/5 of what you should get, or not credited at all. It took me approximately 4 weeks talking to the SGP head office in Singapore to get all this corrected. To rate the price/quality ratio of this hotel, I would say that the rooms sell for their market value at 70/80 USD per night. If you arrive to Surabaya without a reservation, you can just get it for that price from a hotel reservation boot at the airport.

This is by far the worst five star hotel in surabaya. Location is perfect (connected to a major shopping mall), however, management is poor (people smoking everywhere, even in the health club!). Friendly staffs, but I would go to nearby Majapahit Hotel for the same price.
