Banyan Tree Bintan
Ranked #2 of 36 Hotels in Bintan Island
Reviewed 17 August 2010

The only people who would come here and think it's a nice and luxurious resort are people who haven't been to other Banyan Tree resorts.

This is by far the only Banyan Tree resort I've experienced, that is actually rundown! What these people dont know is that you get a very much nicer and more luxurious villa at pretty much the same price (among its branches in the equator, I believe the UAE and Maldives Banyan Trees are pricier).

I'm not sure if age is the only factor attributed to the rundown state of this place. As a regular Banyan Tree customer, I'm quite sure that the first Banyan Tree was the Phuket one, yet the Phuket one still looks very nice and new and in a much better condition than this!

The whole place needs a major overhaul. And its not just that it's old. From the furnishings and interiors I could tell its a lot less luxe right at the start compared to Banyan Tree Phuket and Maldives.

The island itself is very boring with nothing to see or do, the villa's rundown condition doesn't help this fact, since it means you are trapped in the resort. I wouldn't have minded being trapped in a villa in Amanpulo, Philippines or Amankila, Bali.

In fact, being a fan of the Banyan Tree brand, this disturbs me greatly. I wonder why the group even allows this property to exist in this state (although I learnt Angsana is also under them, and check out the reviews on Angsana in Bintan).

If this was the only Banyan Tree I'd ever experienced, I'd have blacklisted the Banyan Tree brand when I shop for resort stays.

Dear MrsKoh,

Thank you for taking the time to share your review regarding your recent stay at Banyan Tree Bintan.

It was sad to read that your impression of Banyan Tree was marred by the condition of some of our facilities. Please accept my unreserved apologies and rest assured that these are certainly not on par with the resort's luxurious standards. We continuously strive to ensure guest satisfaction and your comments are greatly appreciated as they assist us in achieving this.

We do have plans to renovate the resort especially on our villas. We also have an ongoing Villa Maintenance Project which deals with the structural issues of the villas.

Your patronage is greatly valued and appreciated. We hope that we are given the opportunity of reinstating ourselves in your good faith by welcoming you back to our lovely resort in the not too distant future.

Kind regards,

Jamal Hussain

In this part of the world there is a lot of competition between beautiful beach resorts, and unfortunately the Banyan Tree fails the test. The villas are seriously showing their age, the windows look old, it's quite dark and smells very dank and musty. The oudoor area also looked very faded, and "budget". I had to spend an afternoon hanging around between check out and my ferry, and aside for by the pool, there is no comfortable lounging area where a guest can sit, look at the water and read or daydream. The only area to sit around if it is raining is the check-in/reception area (which is NOT a loungy area at all) or a restaurant. The Thai restaurant has good food but the prices are the same as London, it's a bit silly really. Anyhow, I came with high expectations and left sorely disappointed. The only redeeming factors are the friendly staff and the very nice spa.

It was our first stay with Banyan Tree and they really do not disappoint. For starters, they called my bf and i by name all the time! even the staff driving the buggy called out to us in the morning when we were heading out from our villa. They were really hospitable.

We stayed in the Oceanview Villa and we just fell in love with the room and bed. Pleasant surprises from housekeeping everyday with the bedding, and they even come by at night to set up the mosquito repellant coil, did the bedding again and left cookies and a breakfast scroll if you wanted to order in-room breakfast next morning. There is also private jet-pool in the balcony overlooking the ocean :)

This trip was meant to celebrate my bf's birthday, and we were so glad to receive a complimentary chocolate cake from room service at midnight! (in case you are wondering, this is at your preferred timing)

We had the Tropical Rainmist Spa Treatment; scrub and massage was superb.. but the rainmist was errr.. can do without.. I would probably choose something else if I visit Banyan Tree again. It was like lying down and taking a hot shower but with more 5 showerheads. I don't know.. it wasnt really my thing.

We went on the Snorkelling Safari Trip and the instructor ferried us like 5-10min out into the sea before he taught us the basics and joined us in snorkelling. As we went for this trip quite early in the morning, there was only 2 of us and the instructor. It was like a private snorkelling session, and probably because of this, the instructor was very candid and waved us over to wherever he found wonderful sights. We saw lots of corals and some fish swimming around. Water visibility was not superb, but we enjoyed our first snorkelling session nonetheless.

If you have the extra cash, do go on their Dinner on the Rocks as well. The experience was great, food was fabulous and the server was really friendly and awesome throughout the night. No signs of complains on his face throughout our dinner which lasted for almost 3 hours. It was really romantic and all but i cant help but notice that it became too dark after our 3rd course. You pratically cant see the colours of the dishes anymore. I understand that the lightings cant be too bright or you'll attract all the flies, mosquitos and what not.. Nevertheless, we still encountered those insects anyway. Best to equip yourself with lots of insect repellant first!

Some down sides I had for this trip was that i found it to be a little too pricey. Everything was charged in US dollers and you are really paying a lot more if you compare to other resorts in Bintan. But good thing was that you will feel like it is money well spent because the treatment you'll get at Banyan Tree is simply royalty. Also, you have to pay USD25 for land transfers to/from the ferry terminal to the resort. I know this is private transport, but it is not like they provided us with any other travelling options.

Night activities is really like none. The idea is to loan some DVDs from the library and have a quiet night in and enjoy the in-room facilities. Not really a place for party-goers (luckily we are not!). Or you could call a cab and head to their town area for a walk.

For the 3 days we were there, there were showers in the early morning and some drizzle now and then. It would be great if there was sun for tanning. what's a beach holiday without sun-kissed skin right? But guess I'm just glad our plans for snorkelling and dinner on the rocks happened anyway with no rain :)

Guess Banyan Tree would be a wonderful place to go if you have the extra money or in the mood for a splurge. You know that you are in good hands from the moment you step into their reception.

Thanks for reading my long review!

We had an amazing view of the sea from our villa. Loved the outdoor jacuzzi, the comfortable bed and the bathroom with his and hers sinks. However the villa's aircon couldn't cool the room enough and the minibar needs more variety. Dinner at Safron was simply top-notch Thai and Indonesian food. Breakfast at Treetops wasn't that fantastic, the buffet spread was small and mediocre.

Overall great service from the hotel staff, everyone was polite and helpful, buggies arrived promptly to zip us around the resort. Requests for a change of water in the jacuzzi and to fix our faulty room phone were attended to without much delay.

Only gripe is about the insects everywhere - flies, mosquitos, mean-looking hornets.. a tradeoff for building a spectacular resort in the middle of nature.

We had a nice stay here. It's a very nice hotel and we were so lucky to get an upgrade :) But it's also an expensive hotel when looking at the price standards in Indonesia. Their Dinner on the rocks (I think that's what they called it) was really good and the atmosphere was really romantic.. Can strongly recommend it..

As part of our return visit to Singapore, we decided to check out Banyan Tree Bintan again. It's been a year since our last visit, but we were happy to see that the view from the two-bedroom villas is as breathtaking as we remembered. This really is the most amazing view from a villa that we've ever seen.

We encountered quite a bit of rain each day during our three days, and there's not a lot to do in Bintan if you're not laying on the beach (or at the pool) or playing golf. But, we were fortunate to get in a couple of rounds of golf at our favorite course, Ria Bintan GC, which made the trip worthwhile. Unfortunately, the Banyan Tree Laguna course is a nice design, especially the holes along the beach, but not always in great shape. So, if you want a memorable round of golf, head to Ria Bintan.

The staff at Banyan Tree Bintan continues to be the very best possible. No matter what we asked, it was done with a smile. We particularly enjoyed meeting Nellie and Richard in the front office. Banyan Tree is lucky to have such fantastic employees.

We hope to return again next year!!

We spent 3 days at the banyan tree in bintan and the experience was at par with what one would expect from a banyan tree property. The staff was very hospitable. Highly recommended if one is looking for a quiet getaway in a luxury resort. We had picked the ocean view villa and had the villa fully lived up to the description on the hotel website.

In terms of food, while the breakfast buffet was outstanding, the food at the restaurants could be better.
