Stayed at Nikoi last year…The experience was great! The whole resort gives you a very rustic feels and a sense of calmness. The water was clear during our stay…children had great fun with the friendly staffs….Overall, the service level was good! Highly recommend to all who loves the nature!

Put it this way - I walked onto the beach for the first time and tears came to my eyes. It is so perfect on Nikoi.

I have spent a lot of time in my life searching for the perfect tropical relaxation and we found it on Nikoi. We have two young boys (4 and 6yrs) - so we are always looking for a place that is suitable for them - as well as being relaxing and peaceful for us as parents.
Nikoi has all the elements that make up the perfect island escape. (I have never put a review on trip advisor until now….)

The island itself is beautiful, the beach is clean and the sand is white and soft. The ocean is clean and warm. In July the breeze and passing storms were a great relief from too much heat. ( I don't usually like any rain - but it came and went and added to the scenic joy of the place).
The staff are wonderful. Samuel in the family restaurant, Tom with the kids, Garry at the pool bar, Tony and his charisma - all made us feel so at home and welcome.
The food is varied, plentiful and tasty. The adult meals are really 'gourmet' and the kids meals were good too. We often requested changes for our kids as they are a bit fussy - and that was no problem. We did discover ordering lunches to our bungalows was a nice change to eating every meal in the restaurant and good to just have a quick bite for lunch rather than sitting down to a meal for an hour in the restaurant.

Once our two boys settled in and felt confident - they spent the days with the other kids on the island and Tom at the 'kids club'. The Kids club is very relaxed and the kids come and go as they please under the supervision of the staff - who help them find their parents if they are ready to leave. We spent a full week on the island - so by the last few days our kids chose to break up their day between the kids club and kayaking, snorkelling and just hanging out with us!
The pool area is wonderful too. I guess an amazing thing about Nikoi is even though it was fully booked for our entire stay it did not feel at all crowded and you have beach walks and pools swims all to yourself. We did not put on shoes for a week!
We did not have any problems with mosquito's as long as we remembered to put some repellant on each night at dinner and when the kids went off to the kids club to watch the evening movie. That seemed to be when they got bitten - as we did forget to a couple of times to use the repellant and they ended up with several decent bites!! There is no disease on the island -so it did not cause any major problems - just felt like bad parents!
The bungalows are spacious and perfectly designed. The fans over the beds (but under the nets) make it cool to sleep at night. The Wifi is a bit intermittent -but enough. We have our own online business and managed to spend an hour each morning working on our laptops in our bungalow and the wifi was sufficient for that. Just a bit slow sometimes - so we would just try again a bit later and it was faster. Not a problem for us at all as we were aiming to spend an absolute minimum of time online during our week there. We had booked the downstairs bunk beds for the boys - but they were feeling scared to be separated from us and we didn't end up using this room. That was not a problem and the staff set up the two day beds in the room to work as beds for the boys.
Nikoi Island can feel quite expensive before you go - as the cost of the rooms, daily food/activity costs, drinks, massages and transfers can add up!!…..But once you experience what it is they are offering, the cost is completely fair, justified and worth every cent.

For families living in this modern world - the people at Nikoi have set up the perfect escape. We were glad we found somewhere for our children to experience a relaxed, safe, nature filled holiday experience. Nikoi would not suit everyone - it is not a typical 'resort' and everything happens at a more organic and natural pace - you sort of have to just arrived and discover it over the first 24 hours as you settle in…..I think it really suits people who don't mind a bit of 'sand on their feet' (literally)…...We are DEFINITELY going back next year! (something we have never done before with a holiday destination!)

This was my second visit to Nikoi. Just like before, the transfer was seamless, the welcome was warm and it's always lovely to see the large spacious rooms. We booked a two bed villa for two couples, so I was a bit annoyed when we arrived to find that the second room was set up with three single beds as though for a family. We stayed in house 5, and based on my prior experience, house 15 is MUCH better for two couples with two equal rooms. Room 5 has a second bathroom across a bridge from the bedroom - not nice in the rain, and surely a bit of a hazard for families? I don't understand this layout. Also at room 5, currently there's construction noise from working on next door, which to be fair they did tell us about. We were asked to come to the bar to tell them if the noise was disruptive, which I thought was an odd request. There is also a VERY loud generator noise that kept us up both nights. So - book this room with caution.

Over the weekend we were there, we took out the paddle boards and catamaran which were brilliant experiences. We were also lucky enough to see a nest of freshly hatched turtles make it to the sea! For me, this was an experience of a lifetime. It was wonderful to see the care and expertise that the team used to help the turtles along their way. Sitting in the evening and watching the stars by the bonfire on the beach is fascinating, and a total joy. Nikoi has no wifi, "games", TV or music - and it's all the better for it.

I think there's areas for improvement in terms of the food and drinks. Firstly, the bar needs to be restocked with all of the drinks advertised (its a bit frustrating having to work your way through the list until you find something they have - this has happened both times we've visited). Secondly, the food is delicious but we would have liked some local options for breakfast, and western options for dinner. The service can be slow at times - especially breakfast - but it's always delivered with a smile.

So Nikoi is beautiful and calm and tranquil but here's the twist. Unfortunately I was queasy on my way home and today (one week later) I'm on 5 different sets of pills for Giardiasis, having gotten progressively worse over the course of the week. When I told the doctor that I'd been to Nikoi, he laughed and said "we get this with people who've been to Nikoi all the time...I don't think the management are aware". So, Nikoi, if you are reading this, please scrupulously clean your kitchens and check your water supplies! I've never been so ill. It was a shame to end my stay this way :-(

Response I received to my email that I sent to alert Nikoi to my illness:
"Nice to know you had a great time on Nikoi. We are very sorry to hear that you were seriously ill when returned home however, I will forward your email to our management and I am sure they will be equally surprised because they also care greatly about each and every guest. Thank you very much for bringing this matter to our attention"

Room Tip: Room four is currently under construction - do not stay in room 5 or 3 during this time.

Thanks for your review and feedback. I am sorry to hear about your illness after you returned. Giardia can be caught from several sources and you may well have picked it up on your way home. Given no one else in your group caught it or the fact that we have had no other instances amongst staff or guests it is most likely that this is the case. As you would be aware all guests eat the same food. The cleanliness of our kitchen is first rate and we have had several visiting chefs comment on how thorough our kitchen staff are with their cleaning routine. Our front of house staff all know the importance of washing their hands before and during service and we provide soap dispensers at their workstations. We have taken the opportunity of reminding our staff of the importance of this. Our bottled drinking water is filtered and UV treated as is our mains water supply. In addition we regularly test our water and can confirm it complies with WHO standards. Since reading your review we have submitted a water sample for testing and are awaiting the results. We have had no other complaints from guests suffering from Giardia and none from a group of 15. We will endeavour to make contact with your doctor to find out more.

We have two types of two bedrooms one suitable for families and one suitable for two couples. You booked the former and did not notify us that you were travelling as two couples. The second room can be made up for a couple which is what happened after you arrived. However it is not ideal for two couples. This beach house is cheaper than the two bedroom with two king beds (#15) that you stayed in last time. There are descriptions on our website and the booking engine of all of our room types. Feedback from families that stay in the two bedrooms are that they like the separation of the bedrooms.

Whilst the menu is fixed our kitchen is happy to cater for individual requests. The menu is written up on the blackboard for the next meal. Our staff will ask guests if they are happy with menu or have any specific dietary requirements. This allows our kitchen to focus on choosing a menu using the freshest ingredients and yet still allows guests with specific dietary requirements, likes or dislikes to chose from a longer menu. Our regular guests consistently tell us not to change this concept as they like the simplicity and enjoy trying dishes that they might not otherwise order. We like to think of Nikoi as akin to visiting a friend's private island.

We are confused by your comment about a noisy generator at night and suspect that the noise you are referring to is from one of the local fishing boats that occasionally pass by at night. Our electricity at night is come from batteries charged by a large bank of solar panels. During the day we operate using a combination of solar power and generators. Our generator cannot be heard from any of the guest areas. The construction work you refer to was some ongoing maintenance which has now been finished.

I appreciate your positive comments on the quality of food, service and your experience with water sports and were able to see a turtle nest hatch. Thanks for your feedback I can assure you we will follow up on your critique and use this to improve our operation.

i have been to this island on 4 occasions so yes i like it but i have noticed that it is now starting to become rather expensive for what it is and whenever the schools on on holidays they increase the prices of there villas which is not fair on families especially as its mostly families that visit.

`The food on my last visit was noticeably a lesser standard than previous visits and since there is no choice it really should be better.

I have also noticed that its looking a little tired and needs some updating.

The staff are extremely friendly and always at hand to help.

Room Tip: 3 bed villa is perfect for large families.

Thanks for the feedback. It is disappointing to read you feel Nikoi is now overpriced. I would like to clarifty that we do not increase the pricing over school holidays as you have suggested. The only differentiation in our rates year round is that weekend pricing is higher than weekday. Our daily board rate (ie meals and activities) has not changed in 4 years. Our room rates have not increased by more than 5% per annum since we opened. If you compare Nikoi to other private island resorts you will find we are one of the cheapest anywhere. We do put a huge amount of time and effort into maintenance so disappointing to read your comments in this respect. The nature of our building materials are such that they are supposed to age naturally nevertheless we will review this with management. Thanks again for the feedback we do value it.

This is a hard hotel to review as it is quite unusual. It is located on a remote island off East Bintan. To get there you travel by ferry from Singapore (1 hour) a car journey across the island (1 hour) and then a boat journey (30 mins).

On the plus side the staff are exceptionally well mannered and incredibly helpful. All (there are about 60 in total) were very helpful and happy too. The location is extraordinary and the rooms and common areas extremely well put together and finished. The simple design principle of local building materials with modern fittings is exceptionally well executed.

The facilities were good. The grass tennis court and croquet lawn were immaculate and stood out.

On the downside. The food was very average and at times poor. The is a set menu with no choice putting more pressure on getting it right. We felt that their efforts sometimes failed. Simple bbq'd fish would have been good but too often the dishes were over complex and missed the mark (breakfast excepted).

Internet connection was weak and patchy, the best place to surf was around the bar area but even downloading newspapers was problematic and despite paying for access (the free limit was quickly reached) the performance was barely useful.

The island is surrounded by rocks visible at low tide making entry to the sea tricky and the swimming pool, when we stayed was cloudy and un-enticing. This was explained as being a problem with too much salt but given the challenges with low water swimming this is something that might have more focus.

We were booked for three nights but left after two. The reason was the lack of airconditioning in the rooms. This is a personal thing but being based on the equator, despite overhead fans getting sleep proved problematic.

Thanks for the feedback. We are sorry to hear you had trouble sleeping and did not like the concept of a fixed menu. We are the first to admit that Nikoi will not suit everyone and will try and make this clearer in our literature. Thanks again for taking the time to review Nikoi.

Arriving at the island I was surprised at how spacious the resort facilities were and the rooms. The resort is spread out enough that you don't feel like you are really sharing the island with many other guests and there is ample beach beds and equipment to use at your leisure.

Even the pool area is well spaced out and unlike other islands I have stayed on no one is rushing to the pool o save seats for the day. Not to mention the view from the pool deck - amazing!!!!

It was so temperate even when we had a big storm and with all buildings being quite open all welcome breeze was captured.

For most of our stay there was large wedding group on the island which you would expect to impact on the level of service received but I would have to say it was the exact opposite. Staff were attentive and friendly and the food was of a very high quality. I particularly enjoyed the Indonesian meals served - very tasty and fresh.

The highlight of our stay was spotting a mummy turtle coming out of the ocean to lay eggs right in front of our room. We rushed down to the beach to watch (from a safe distance) and shared the experience with many other guests. Incredibly amazing and touching experience. .

Didn't want to leave and would love to go back.
