“Nikoi, what an amazing place”
Reviewed 10 December 2008

Stayed at Nikoi Island at the end of Nov and totally loved the island..Firstly, the Nikoi reservation office were fantastic, they'll give you all the information you need regarding the island, travel from Singapore and visa requirement. At Bintan Ferry Terminal, we were met as soon as we disembarked from the Ferry and whisked away to a private room to complete our immigration requirements for Indonesia. Taxis were waiting outside the terminal to transport us to the speedboat which then took us to Nikoi.
Upon arrival at Nikoi, we were greeted with a wonderful welcome drink and some cold refreshing towels. My beach chalet was very 'barefoot luxury' and I absolutely loved it, it really kept in touch with the eco-friendly theme and was very airy with wonderful high ceilings. The chalet had a lot of sea breeze and you were literally just metres away from the beach. The chalet had everything you need including a gazebo, where you can have a massage next to the beach.
The food though not ' A la carte' was just simply amazing and was taken on a long table seating about 20 people. During my stay there, all the guests commented on how fantastic and fresh the food was and how much choice we had. If you have special dietary requirements, it was no trouble at all for them to serve an alternative dish or drink. We had so much choice and the food was so good that you felt you simply had to do it some justice by tucking into every dish.
The beach is great and though all chalets (6 in total) were full of guests during my stay, I felt that I had the whole island to myself and it was very calm and serene.
The pool area is set amongst natural rock formation and the owner did a wonderful job with the picturesque setting and finishing of the pool area. One of the island owners took a couple and me on a tour of 9 additional chalets currently being built, this was just a wonderful gesture and we really appreciated it.
Staff at Nikoi are just simply some of the most wonderful people I have ever met and I do encourage any visitor staying there to engage them in some conversation. Some are a little shy at first, bearing in mind that English is not their first language but they are willing to learn and want to improve their English skills. I loved the dining room staff. Yogi, the resident bar man is just a great character with wonderful stories and the kids really loved him, he's also the resident David Attenborough and takes the kids on island exploration and they all love the daily feeding of the island's resident lizard. He also makes all the females that visit the island jewelry from the most beautiful seashells picked from the beack. P.s, he's got a couple of spiders living in the bar area (Lucy and Suzy I believe) and they seem to love all the attention from the guests.

Urged on by our friends in Singapore we spent the first few days of our Far East trip in Nikoi. What a great decision!
A fantastic location, with very good food and extremely friendly and competent staff. Great cottages(you cannot call them huts) with both upstairs and downstairs terraces.
Spent our time swimming, walking (not much), sailing and sitting in the cocktail bar. A highlight was having dinner at a table specially set up on the moonlit beach on the last night - nothing seemed to be too much effort.
An excellent stay, by the end of which we were so chilled we were almost horizontal.

"Oh My God...." was the jaw-dropping expression that followed us around our stay on Nikoi.

It's difficult to really highlight parts in particular without probably 'gushing' on and on about how utterly fantastic it is.

So, to make this review easier to read, I'll bullet point:

Setting: Fantasy island-esque
Staff: Make you feel embarrassed when you think of UK based
hospitality.
Accomodation/Huts: Robinson Crusoe meets Ideal Homes
Facilities: 5 star
Food & Drink: Beautifully prepared, local produce. And a cold beer, wine etc available on demand....heaven!

We had the pleasure of meeting one of the owners whilst there, who was overseeing a slight expansion to the capacity. This shouldn't effect the experience at all, and will only increase the chilled-out and friendly atmosphere.

P.S try a fresh coconut if one of the staff will 'shimmy' up for you!

  • Liked — Too many to pick-out
  • Disliked — Nothing even threatened to disappoint, apart from the imminent departure date!

You have almost the whole island! but not Pricey at all !!

For a price of less than USD500.00 per night, you have
a private house (2 floors),
-all transfers from Bintan Ferry in private van and boat.
-all food and drinks included (drinks are not included, but we had beer and cocktails 4-5 times a day to come up to that total)
-all watersports (yatch, kayak, snorkeling, fishing, catamaran) unlimited use ANYtime.
-the whole sand spit (size of a football field) all to yourself Most of the time.

- during our stay ...there were 15 staff x 10 customers. what a ratio!

- Yogi is the best fella on the island who will be with you most of the time, at the bar or setting up the sail yatch / catamaran for you. Also your babysitter!

- sit next to the bonfire on the sand spit under the moonlight and stars

- superb meal though set menu. But you may request for items for next meal coming up. very delicious and more than enough portions.

- quite good reef for basic snorkeling ....many species of fish

- Were afraid of NO air-conditioning in the house.. But it's funny we actually turned off the fan because we got very good sea breezes.

- Need to pre-arrange for scuba though. Check with them beforehand.

- Once arrived, tell Yogi what you would like to do , and make sure they have the speedboat for you if you wish to go fishing and further snoketling

- Don't expect the Banyan Tree / Four Seasons / Aman treatment.
This place is laidback, wild and raw. It's completely a different thing. But definitely has an edge and we loved it very much.

- The staffs are not like butlers...They are like your friends!!

-Especially, make friends with Yogi, the bar-guy, your babysitter, and your yatch guy. He is very funny and friendly.

Our experience at Nikoi was no short of awesome. We stayed for 4 days, and it was just enough to wind down and really relax..and not get 'boring'. As a family with two small kids (4 and 6), it was elemental that the kids loved the place. So they did; the beach just outside, a kids pool, sand covered floors, bonfires.. the staff was very attentive... and ensured the children had a great time. That only helped the adults to wind down as well. Food was great (though pricey!). All in all it was a great stay... though the accommodation is relatively well priced, it is the drinks and food that will make the big inroads into the budget. Make sure you plan ahead... that said; we'll be back... only next time we'll make sure we'll have time to stop by some of the shops etc on the 'mainland'. Could be an interesting experience. A+++++ overall...

  • Liked — The serenity of the place; small and unspoilt.. few people around.. no noise & mess ..
  • Disliked — Nothing; loved it .. wished it was ours...

Had 4 nights on Nikoi for our honeymoon. Absolutely loved every moment. It is like staying at someone's island rather than a hotel. There are no structured rules or signs. The houses are open air, beautifullly done and each house has its own huge outdoor living area.

The food is fantastic (SGD80 per day and plenty of it and variety), the cocktails lovely and the overall experience was unreal. We had massages every day, enjoyed great snorkling straight off the beach and kayaking etc.

Also had dinner on the beach one night (very romantic) and had a picnic on our own on another island one day.

I just can't recommend this highly enough. It is luxurious but natural, pampering without sterile hotel pretension.

We love nikoi & would love to go back one day.
