We don't understand why this is recommended in for example footprint guide. The rooms are not clean at all and far from comfortable or cosy. No special touch or anything. On our bed lay a dirty (clearly not cleaned) thick brown sheet. And the staff, only one cleaner and a girl at the front desk seems friendly. When we wanted to change hotel, we didn't want to stay for one night and just left our baggage in one room for an hour and half they asked fifty procent of the prize. We first refused and immediatly a men threatened us by saying he was going to call the police and that they had our pasport number. Spoken about a professional, polite approach. We just wanted to make a late night trekking to the mountain so we didn't need a room. Please stay away from this hotel, even it is just for a support to us about what happened to us.

The people there are quite nice, and the price isn't bad for Sumatra. But there are seriously dozens of dogs all around the hotel that just go nuts starting before dawn. The sound echoes through the rooms and makes sleep impossible. However, if you're doing tours all day then waking up so brutally early may not be terrible. Road noise is about the same as elsewhere in the city. The free breakfast is good and plenty of coffee is provided.

Arrived here without reservations...it was a Lonely Planet recommendation. Reception was very nice, gave me several choices of rooms to look at. I chose the top-priced one, with A/C, though in retrospect, you might not need it. In March, at least, Bukit. was cool enough.
I stayed 3 nights. The staff was exceptional, sometimes sitting in the lobby to chat with me. My room was very large, very clean. The bathroom is ok, not great. The shower is of that type common in Asia...no curtain...so the whole bathroom gets wet. After a while, you adapt. The included breakfast is basic, but tasty. There is only Indonesian food in the buffet, and the coffee urn has slightly sugared coffee, but you can ask for eggs and toast, and I am sure they would make you coffee without sugar if you ask.
There is a good local guide who frequents the hotel lobby. His name is Arman, though some call him Armando. He took me on two interesting day trips at a reasonable price. His English is fairly good, and his knowledge of the area is excellent.
The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the Clock Tower, symbol and gathering point of the city. On the way there, you pass Internet cafes, local and Western food places, ATMs, and some shopping. At night, there are restaurants set up along the sidewalk, with cheap and tasty food.
A few pieces of advice...Most of.the ATMs in Indonesia give out a maximum of 1 million or 1.5 million rupiah....sounds like a lot, but is only $100-150 USD. If you want to avoid your bank's hefty charges for each withdrawal, search one the banks that give at least 1.5 million....I found Danamon (big yellow sign) and BII (red sign). . Also, the sidewalks in Bukittinggi get very slippery in the rain. I don't know what they were thinking when they constructed them this way.
But, the hotel is a home away from home. Ilson, one of the room boys, is exceptionally friendly and helpful....and he likes to practice his English.
I would certainly recommend this hotel for anyone, and I hope to return...there is at least three days of sightseeing to be done here....Harau Valley, Lake Maninjau, and the Minangkabao Villages/countryside.
