I stayed all together 3 times in Medan, two times in here and once next door as it was full. One reason it is nearly always fully booked is the combination of friendly and helpful staff, the good and cheap food and the free wifi.
The rooms are clean whereas the bathrooms need some improvements. In addition the bathrooms are by far to small. Some rooms are dark and slightly smelly, other rooms are bigger and have a window. So it depends on the room how satisfied you will be with the quality. The rooms are definitely not the best, but you pay only 60 000, so what can you expect? That is a very fair price.
The breakfast is good and cheap, the staff is flexible if you order something that is not on the menu and they try to help you wherever possible. The neighborhood is interesting and you are fast at several shopping centers and sights. If you plan to go to watch orangutans, stay closer to the bus station or catch from there the minivan with the number 64. I paid 5000, it took me about 35 minutes during the rush hour.

Room Tip: Take a room with window and on the fourth floor! Check in early as it is always full.

We stayed here for one night and it was awful. A musty smelling small room with a dirty bathroom with of course cold shower and bucket flush toilet. Please save yourself this hotel.

Reasonable price for room, free wifi at lobby, the price is not including breakfast but if you like local style breakfast you can go to their canteen at morning and order one fried rice, only cost 8,000rp. The location of the hotel is very good, just beside the mosque and walking distance to most of the city attractions.

The room is very basic for standard but clean, attached bathroom is very small with only cold water.

I've been there in October and it was the cheapest hotel ever i met...the service is quite good and humble...the staff really helpful..and the price is amazingly cheap for a single tourist like me...i could not imagine the price for the room is only Rp100k/night...and it's in renovation process...so i think the price will be hike a little right now...

Room Tip: Choose an A/C room instead of fan...it will make you more confortable

I find it quite hard to rate residence and we found it really poor but it's really cheap so you need to weigh that up. Its targeted from what we saw at Indonesian business people and not really western tourists so the rooms are very basic and the bathrooms are not great. The smell which comes from them is really bad. We stayed 1 night on 2 occasions (before and after Bukit Lawang). The first room was a double on the 4th floor with a window. It's a tiny double and we chose to sleep in our sleeping bag liners as opposed to the sheets (same for the 2nd stay). The 4th floor itself is more of a storage and work area with mattresses everywhere and building going on. The 2nd stay was in a double which had no window. Staff are friendly but their english isn't the greatest so hard to get any tips on where to eat etc. Again after reading this remember the rate for the rooms we stayed in was 50000 per night so if you're on a budget it's definitely do-able.

We paid 50,000Rp per night for a tiny twin room and the smallest ever (!) attached toilet (sit-down style, bucket flush) and cold water shower. But we had a big window and a great view across the city (from the 4th floor) including the Grand Mosque.
It was a perfectly adequate room (clean and recently decorated) for a very reasonable price and compared very favourably to the UKM Preferred Hotel (recommended by LP) across the road where I was offered a grim twin room (albeit bigger) with a bucket cold water shower for 145,000Rp per night (it would have been 160,000Rp if the cold shower faucet had worked).
The staff at the Residence Hotel were polite and friendly. The location is great, as long as you don’t mind the call to prayer playing through the loud speakers of the Grand Mosque right next door.
