We stayed with friends and our two kids (10 and 7) at the Hotel Deli River on our arrival and departure (four nights in total). The rooms had inter-connectig doors and were perfectly comfortable. We enjoyed some of the best food we ate in Sumatra at the restaurant and enjoyed conversations with the friendly staff and owners. Our children loved the pool, the flying fox and the beautiful plants and flowers in the lovely garden. We all enjoyed our trips to and from Medan in a becak.

We booked this hotel based on its excellent reviews. We came in during a violent thunderstorm after a long day's journey from Lake Toba, and were a little surprised at the isolated setting and grassy driveway and deserted parking lot. However, it soon became apparent that we were in good hands.

The staff consists of several very bright university coeds apparently associated with the Omlandia Student Society. They showed a combination of easy competence and friendliness that had us settled comfortably sipping a cool beverage with supper ordered and arrangements made for airport transport next day within ten minutes of arrival.

The food was exceptionally good. We ordered Javanese dishes, and the size of the portions and elegance of the presentation matched the brilliant use of spices. Our included continental breakfast the next morning featured fruit, fruit juice, eggs, toast, cheese, jam, and a pot of very good coffee, so we headed to the airport in good trim.

Our room was in a building across the fish pond from the restaurant. It had both fan and AC, cable TV, good lighting, and reliable hot water. We slept well in the comfortable beds until and after the call to prayer, with no other sound to disturb our rest. Try that in downtown Medan!

Our hotel-arranged transportation was there early, and despite the heavy 0800 traffic, he got us to the airport in a half hour, so unless you have shopping or business to do in noisy, dirty Medan, staying in this quiet area doesn't add much time to your airport commute.

This is a good hotel that is different from anywhere else we've ever stayed in Indonesia. If we're in Medan again, it will be our first choice.

There were six of us - four adults and two children - who arrived late one evening after a long trip from Australia. We were met at the airport as arranged and when we got to the Deli River there was no fuss - staff showed us to our rooms (with check-in left to the next morning). Lovely. Our rooms were very comfortable, clean, the bedding and towels perfectly fine. With efficient and welcome air-conditioning. The next morning the breakfast table was set on the garden terrace and proved to be the first of a number of excellent meals. Its true that the Deli is out of town, in a flight path, and the call to prayer can be heard. But we all agreed these were both minor, and in some ways welcome - the call to prayer especially was not a static riven yell but rather beautiful, and as for the flight path we have stayed in Sanur Bali - now there is a flight path! All in all a great choice we returned there after our Aceh trip and were made welcome. I have to add that for children (and adults) the pool is a joy beautiflly clean perfect - and last of all the flying fox! The children almost refused to leave. Deanna and Dirk and their staff provide a perfect haven from which to explore the wonders that are Sumatra!

There were 6 families in our group (13 adults, 10 children) when we visited Medan. We occupied 6 out of 8 rooms available at this hotel. We just put up a night here. Its quite a distance from town, so if you plan to go shopping at Pasar Ikan, I would not recommend you to stay here. With the heavy traffic and the narrow roads, it can easily take 45 minutes to get to town.

We stayed here because shopping was not our main itinerary. We needed a place to unwind after a tiring journey from Brastagi.

Basic rooms but clean and spacious. Every room has a balcony. The kids loved the swimming pool and the flying fox. Not many activities here so if you need that adrenaline rush, dont stay here. Good internet connection.

Food - nothing to shout about but the fried rice for breakfast was good. We tried poffertjes and loved it. Coffee making facilities, tv are available in every room.

We were not satisfied with the minibus Tri Jaya provided. The minibus could only accomodate 24 people. There were already a driver, a tour guide and a co-driver in the minibus. The minibus was so small, it was so difficult to move around in the minibus. There was 1 kind of smell in the minibus, aircond very noisy, faulty brakes. Blessing in disguise when the minibus broke down on the way from Brastagi to Medan, they replaced with a new and bigger bus.

The tour guide did ask for tips after the tour ended, if I am not mistaken Rp350,000. If you want to buy Bika Ambon, you can do so at the airport, no need to order from the tour guide as the price is cheaper at the airport.

Overall, Tri Jaya did a good job, would definitely recommend friends to book with them.
