Go early in the morning and wear some warm clothes. Go all the way to the top of the stairs. It's a few steps and the smell is awful, but totally worth it! The colors are amazing!

This place simply blows your mind. Getting up early and the trek up is so worth it. It is magical to see the colors of the gorgeous lakes. I can imagine why many people jump in. They look absolutely intriguing and tempting :)
Here are some tips for your trip
1. The locals will try to sell you the idea of a guide. You don't need one. There are markers everywhere and you won't get lost
2. It gets pretty chilly up there. Do take a wind cheater or jacket.
3. The resourceful locals do quickly set up a small stall there for you to buy coffee/snacks. The coffee is awful but you do find the warm glass good to hold in that chilly breeze.
4. Don't forget to take a powerful torch as it's still dark when you start climbing
5. The black lake does not have an enclosure towards it's north end. Please don't follow tourist advice and get too close.
6. There is just one restroom near the black lake
7. Walk slowly on your way back as there are 200+ varieties of birds and you'll miss them if you hurry back :)

Just visited the Kelimutu on 29 June 2014, the crater lakes are amazing! Apparently, the lakes change its colours quite often. I am just really glad to catch it when the two lakes which are besides each other is of very different colours. One of them is like Black-Brown with tinge of orange and the other is a bright Green-Blue. It is absolutely stunning and magical during sunrise.

Depending on the day or time of day, *you may or may not* get to see the lakes because of the thick fog. While most travellers depart early in the morning to see the lakes at sunrise, we went in the afternoon and had a peek at the lakes when the fog cleared for a brief amount of time. It never cleared entirely but boy was it worth it when it did. The fog which surrounded the lakes gave it a mystical appearance. The drive up to the lakes involves driving on a short stretch of muddy, winding road which can be very slippery on a rainy day. So pick your time to go up wisely.

There are toilets at the parking lot area and another where the lakes are; but both were very dirty and did not have soap or toilet paper. The one at the top did not even have any water.

Despite the early start necessary to get up there for sunrise it is definatley worth it! The walk up from the car park is very easy, but take a torch. Plenty of warm clothing is needed for the top too as it is cold up there when there is no sun on it. We opted for a car to the top and then walked back down. We took the road as far as the first village at which point there is a short cut off to the right (just as you get to the big white concrete arch) that takes you through several traditional villages back into moni. When you get to Agnes' restraunt take a left down to the waterfalls and shorter route back into moni. Takes a couple of hours but was a really nice/cheaper way back down.

Other than that it is exactly what it says on the tin and a must whilst your in Flores.
