“A heavenly honeymoon!”
Reviewed 25 June 2014

My wife and I had the privilege of spending our honeymoon at the idyllic Nihiwatu Resort and the entire experience was heavenly! From the efficiency and flexibility of the reservations team to the hospitality of the management and the extremely high service standards of the staff, the entire team made our honeymoon an unforgettable experience!

The staff went out of their way to make us comfortable and orchestrated some magical surprise dinners and massages to add to the romance of a very special trip.

To mention but a few, Linda & Marie were charming, as were the entire F&B staff and Bertie made our Nihioko breakfast very special! My wife thoroughly enjoyed yoga with Chelsea while I was taken on the fishing trip of a lifetime with Chris and Marshall; Chris made sure of a healthy catch, I enjoyed a swim with 5 or 6 Silky Sharks and Chef Bernard turned my Wahoo & Tuna in to delicious sashimi!

I cannot sing the praise of the team and resort enough. Highly recommended!

Doing your beach walk alone on a sunny Sumba morning, you could be easily believe that you and the crashing waves were the only things on the planet at that moment. That "in the middle of nowhere" feeling which, in our crazy world takes a little to achieve these days.
Nihiwatu provides this escape into nature providing luxury accommodation built commflaged into the side of a Sumba cliff face. Everything you need on a surf/beach/wilderness holiday is at your fingertips. I loved that I could immerse myself into yoga twice a day if I felt like it whilst my husband was making use of the great surf break out front. Absolutely all of the staff were best friends with our 14 month old son after 8 days which was a fantastic help to a mum who needed a bit of a break.
Stories from our trip to Nihiwatu will be retold until we definitly return.

White sand, friendly staff, wide space accommodation and water sports activities are really the one I can never forget. Exploring their organic garden, joining yoga class for one hour and a day trip to the nearby villages and meeting local people is my very first experience. Just one thing is almost missing our flight back from there because no one told us that the flight is going to leave.

It's rare to share a travel experience that truly warrants the phrase 'life-changing', a term that too often gets used as marketing hype. However, the beauty, soul and spirit of Nihiwatu and its exceptional people, the local Sumbanese had a profound effect both on me and my outlook when I visited to experience the re-opening in March, this last month.
The resort had been recommended to me and my husband by friends who had travelled to Sumba in 2010; their enthusiasm for this mysterious island had always left me wondering…its not so much what they said, but what their genuine happiness told of.
The journey from the airport to the resort takes about one hour thirty minutes and starts to really build excitement for what lays ahead as you pass traditional settlements, through thick palm tree jungles and rice-paddy terraces, in full definition of colours, that I can only compare from films.
As we arrived at the resort, we were welcomed by traditional Sumbanese dancing and music that was quite mesmerising as we sipped our fresh lime water.
We stayed in Wamoro Villa A, a stunning villa with it's own private sand-floored terrace and Jasmine-filled gardens with access to a private Bale overlooking the ocean which became our daily breakfast location (tip ask for the Fire Toast).
Our two week experience was truly magical and filled with some of the most extraordinary experiences.
There is a new team of specialist experience 'talent' at the hotel - Mark Healey, Big Wave Surf Champion with a team of Watermen that offer world-class surfing, fishing trips, free-diving lessons - which I had never dreamt I would try, let alone master during our time there - enough to go out on a trip to a FAD (Fish Aggregating Device) that the resort's new Estate Manager had set up to create a marine ecosystem. To be able to dive with Mark and Chad, an international spear-fishing champion from Florida was truly unbelievable, not to mention my first catch of Mahi Mahi and Wahoo on a later fishing trip.
Our real love is walking and the landscape is both breath taking and poetic. Johann, (an ex-Safari Guide from South Africa) took us out to the Lapopu Waterfalls, a sunrise walk to Nihioka with breakfast served in a tree-house overlooking the most idyllic turquoise ocean, walking along the 2.5km private beach at the resort up into Lamboya…each so incredible with photo opportunities everywhere.
We also visited one of the local schools at Rua, to serve lunch to the children - a wonderful example of one of the projects that the Sumba Foundation works with. The Foundation was founded by the resort and is one of the reasons why guests come back year after year.
In the evenings, the choices range from cocktails at The Boathouse which is the daily ritual at sunset, a la carte dining in the new Wavefront restaurant - the food is exquisite thanks to the new chef onboard - my favourite dish was from the spice-inspired Indonesian menus - a Javanese curry, movie night under the stars or relaxing in our very own 'Bale' with a G&T. We were also treated to a Mexican Fiesta night during the two weeks - the staff decorated the restaurant with flowers and everyone wore hats fashioned out of coconut leaves - so much fun for children and adults.
The real magic though lies in the hospitality and exceptional service shown from the Sumbanese staff. Our Butlers, Ambu and Simson were exceptional - graceful, always smiling and ready to make every day truly, truly special. To see their genuine spirit and pride for their culture and heritage prompted me to write this review. Not an avid contributor to TripAdvisor, I felt it necessary to share in the hopes that it inspires a few more people to make this life-enhancing trip. It truly was magic!

There is nothing like Nihiwatu in the world. The landscape is breathtaking and the people are kind and welcoming. The general manager, George, and his staff go above and beyond at making your stay at Nihiwatu exceptional. Activities range from a waterfall hike (absolutely majestic), scuba diving, surfing, stand-up paddling, fishing, and day tripping to local villages and schools. I've never seen a turtle, eel, and a plethora of tropical fish in a single dive to one of the healthiest reefs on the planet.

Nihiwatu is very much supportive of the Sumba community and it is heart-warming to see how much the resort and the Sumba Foundation work together to positively impact the lives of the Sumbanese. It is very refreshing to be in a place as luxurious and spectacular as Nihiwatu, yet is closely connected and supportive of the people of Sumba. Nihiwatu will change your life.

The most amazing eco-lodge! Nihiwatu is a perfect combination of luxury and nature!
We stayed at the Lantoro Villa, a stunning villa with a huge private pool and an amazing view. So many things to do and discover in this resort, it’s a true experience that you will never forget.
The food is exquisite!
Our butler Jenny made our stay memorable with many surprises and special attentions! Every single person working at Nihiwatu is just so nice. The service is just perfect!

We only stayed 4 days but for sure we will come back for 2 weeks!! Best place we ever been to!

We went on Honeymoon to Nihiwatu for 2 week in the first two week in October.
The whole experience was amazing. This place is one of very few places that really does exceed in a perfect destination. We were not surfers however there was so much to do at the retreat and please to go. Everything about this property is truly special. The room/Villa, food and the staff are at the highest standard. The beaches are empty and you get the feeling you are on your own paradise island.
In is all inclusive and only charge for special water activities and special requests for high end drinks.
The retreat also supports in the big way the Sumba Foundation which really helps many local villages with water supply and their medical needs.
We will be going back as often as we can. Our butler Anita really made the trip too!
