After much diligent research, we decided to take our Australian visitors to Doniana for a midday meal during our visit to Acco. We are all in mid seventies+ and I had planned a walking tour of about 4 hours with a break at 1.30pm. Yesterday, 4th June was extremely hot, and by the time we reached the sea walls from our parked car at the opposite end of the old city, we were all in need of refreshment. I pointed out Doniana to our friends and remarked that that was where we would be eating our meal, but we could have coffee, cold drinks nearby. We were more than an hour early for our booked table. However Doniana is so incredibly beautifully situated, that our friends begged to stop then and there. AT 12. 20 the restaurant was quite empty and clearly the staff were still getting ready. However within minutes we were seated at a table with 180 degrees of magnificent views. We enjoyed a leisurely mezzo, very fresh and tastefully prepared . The fattouch salad was excellent. Our mains came after a decent interval but would have been quicker had we asked. By 1.00pm the restaurant was full. The sea bream was grilled to perfection with no fancy sauces to spoil the fresh sweet taste of the fish, served simply with half a lemon and very good french fries. The lamb chops were abundant, about 6 large ones and done exacty as ordered. Rare. Grilled well on the outside but pink all the way through. Something quite difficult to obtain in Israel where meat is usually overdone. This is not gourmet food. But there were more upmarket dishes on the menu. We chatted away to our heart's content. Although the restaurant was full, no-one pressured us to leave. Service, when we required it was attentive and very pleasant. It was exactly the experience I had hoped for. We will return and recommend this restaurant highly to our friends. PS very glamourous washrooms.
