“Growing Pains and EXCEPTIONALLY Hard Beds”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 August 2014

Overall, I enjoyed my stay of a number of nights at the La Quinta in a town where there are truly not many options available. The staff was exceptional, the breakfast was great, and the hotel definitely felt "new," but there were also not ENOUGH staff and there were problems with the operation of some of the amenities and the beds are painfully hard. Here's a more thorough breakdown:

ROOMS: There was plenty of space and the rooms include a microwave and small fridge. They are well-maintained and well-cleaned by housekeeping. It is quiet during the evenings. HOWEVER, the beds were EXCEPTIONALLY hard--almost as hard as the floor would be and so hard that I continually woke up throughout the night EVERY night I was there because different parts of my body would begin to ache! Also, the hotel uses showerheads that barely let out any water leaving you to fiddle around with it and try to increase the strength of the stream for naught.

AMENITIES: Okay. There is a "spa," a pool, and a workout room. All are average. The "spa" is actually just a whirlpool that accompanies the pool. The pool is fairly small, which I believe would make it difficult to swim laps in, but otherwise normal. Finally, the workout room is equipped with two treadmills, an elliptical, a Total Body sort of workout equipment, and (I believe) a stationary bike or two. There are towels in the gym and water fountains just outside but no water cooler or anything like that. Also, when I was there, the remote control to the TV was lost/stolen (as was the one in the lobby), but someone quickly helped me work the TV (though he did not actually replace the remote at that moment for future guests who might have the same problem). Finally, there are also two computers with a printer; however, the printing was not working during my entire stay there. First, the printer had run out of ink and no replacement cartridges were available. Then, after that was fixed, there were issues with the printer's wifi connection to the computers, which nobody knew how to fix at the time. While the front desk more than happily printed what I needed, this is not truly a functioning "business center" yet.

BREAKFAST: Great. You have a selection of juices, pastries, bread items, a waffle maker, yogurts, fruits, hard-boiled eggs, and then a rotating hot entree and side. They also put out fresh baked cookies in the lobby at night.

SERVICE: Exceptional but understaffed. The staff La Quinta has are great. They are willing to hold baggage and even objects for other guests. When you have a complaint, they address the problem right away. And they even use their own personal resources to assist with their jobs. I especially want to single out Jennifer and Heather for the excellent job they did during my stay. That being said, there was almost never more than one person at the front desk at any particular time. As a result, when that person would be called away, there were times when nobody was watching the lobby and where I just had to go away and come back again later cause there was no one to help me. The management really needs to be attune to this problem and staff their hotel more appropriately.

LOCATION: This is a bit further outside of the center of Artesia than almost all of the other hotels, but the town is tiny anyway, and it never takes more than 10 minutes to drive to any part of it. There is also a major grocery store conveniently open until 10pm located next door to the La Quinta. Other than that, there are only fast food restaurants in the immediate area.

In short, there are a number of issues this property still has to work out. I have no doubt that they will do this with their excellent staff, but it may be better to stay somewhere more established like the Hotel Artesia for now and check in on this hotel next year once it is operating more smoothly.

This new hotel in Artesia is absolutely wonderful. While there were still some small things to be worked out (Do Not Disturb signs hadn't arrived yet), the hotel overall is a great place. The staff was exceptionally friendly and gave great service.

My family and I drove 12 hours and when we finally arrived we had nothing but problems. I had to wait over 20 minutes to check-in. When I was finally able to check-in the girl behind the counter got frustrated with the system and started cussing.

We then proceeded to our room and it was disgusting. The microwave was filthy. The shower had green stuff all over the walls and the carpet wasn't vacuumed. This is supposed to be a brand new hotel mind you...

So, they moved us to a second room. Again, microwave was filthy. Carpets weren't vacuumed and this time instead of a dirty shower it was broken. It was a huge crack too. My son would have cut his feet on it.

So, now a third time. They moved us and there were safety pins all over the floor. The shower had pubic hair on the walls and it was dirty.

Then there was an issue with the WiFi. It did not work in our room. We had no signal at all whatsoever. When my husband tried to discuss it with them they were just rude and started arguing with him about it.

We finally gave up and just stayed put. We were all exhausted. The breakfast was mediocre at best. The food was only luke warm. The coffee wasn't good. On our at morning they took breakfast away 45 minutes early. That was annoying.

When my husband took our son to swim in the pool they had to get out almost immediately because it was freezing! He tried to go get in the hot tub but there were a bunch of guys down there drinking.

We will never be back here again.

The brand new La Quinta in Artesia is the place to stay. Welcoming staff, beautiful interior, spotless rooms, very good breakfast and "pet friendly". I recommend this hotel to anyone staying in the Pecos Valley area.

This hotel went out of their way to help us when we had an error in booking via an on-line booking site. They stored our luggage while we went to Carlsbad Cavern, then made sure we had rooms ready for us. All hotels were booked, so if they hadn't discovered the error and fixed it, we would have had to drive an hour to find another hotel.

I did not want to pay the exorbitant rates in Carlsbad after visiting the Caverns, so we opted for Artesia, which made for an easier trip over to Alamogordo the next morning. This hotel is brand new, and it was so nice that everything worked as it should and was so tastefully done! The beds were comfortable, the breakfast was good, there was free wifi, and the bathroom was very nice. There was a large group checking in from the oil fields, but the front desk person was very helpful and friendly. The rooms were extraordinarily quiet. The only reason I didn't give five stars is because the pool wasn't good - just a hole in the ground with some chairs - and when you are traveling with kids, pools are important.

After a long drive and trying to find a hotel in midland and carlsbad with nothing to be found (apparently the oil field workers are in town and staying for a few months taking up all of the hotels), I was very happy to get the last room available at this hotel even though it was about 30 miles out of our way. It was about 1am when we arrived and Savannah who worked the night shift was so nice and welcoming. She shared that the hotel had only been opened for 2 weeks and that nobody had actually stayed in the room we were staying in for the evening (which is rare). The only downside was the noise coming from the hallways - the sheets and towels were brand new out of the package so the sheets were rough and the towels left fuzz on us. They have free breakfast which is pretty good and even allowed us to do a late check out. Would definitely stay here again.
