“Where Jesus started His ministry”
Reviewed 28 October 2013

Walls and ceiling are from the crusader period (11th century) but the floor is certainly 1st century, so this was the actual floor where Jesus read from the book of Isaiah and fulfilled the scripture in their hearing. We had the scripture read and a song sang to us. It was a very special time here

“Simple place, bad attitude”
Reviewed 1 October 2013

Very bad attitude from the person in the entrance, avoiding entrance to people or children which "seemed to him they may disturb other people". Very unplacent

“Now that's a piece of history!”
Reviewed 24 June 2013

The place is really very simple but what is impressing is the history which stands behind it. Our guide took the trouble to line out the different functions of the place during the ages.
I strongly recommend to get a guided tour of the place.

“All gone?”
Reviewed 19 April 2013

Background: Located in the heart of the Old City, and into a small courtyard away from the busy stalls of the souk, stands this small sanctuary. This present church, whose floor is set below street level, is owned by the Greek Catholic diocese and was built over the original Jewish synagogue. The synagogue is believed to be where Jesus preached his famous Sabbath sermon, declaring -- in no uncertain terms -- that he was the Messiah. Back then, the Nazarene worshippers were so enraged that they dragged Jesus to the Mount of Precipice** to throw him to his death. Needless to say, Jesus miraculously survived the angry mob.

The original synagogue, its structures and wall inscriptions are all gone.

[**Side Note: The Mount of Precipice is about 3 km south of here, on the outskirts of Nazareth, close to the site where Pope Benedictus XVI gave a mass during a visit in 2009. By car, follow signs for "Mt Precipice" on HWY 60 (Tawfik Zayyad) that bypasses Nazareth towards Jewish Natzeret Illit.]

“Use your imagination”
Reviewed 31 December 2012

There is really nothing special about this structure, but with a bit of imagination you can see a special place. If you miss this, no problem.
