Everyone we encountered on the staff - from the wait staff to the housekeepers - were very friendly and accomodating. The rooms, while dated and in need of repairs (our's had holes in the walls & a cracked toilet) were clean. The activity director kept guests informed and tried to get everyone involved in age-specific activities (on-site bingo, arts & crafts, volleyball, etc... during the day & off-site go-carts, mini-golf, etc... after dinner). The prices are very reasonable. It seems like everyone who works at Acra Manor wants you to enjoy your stay.
The property is in need of a complete overhaul. To say it's outdated is an understatement. Much of the "resort" is in disrepair. The game room, with it's worn carpet & couches, and wood paneled walls, included among a few games, 3 old video games & 2 shredded/chipped ping pong tables. The baby and adult outdoor pools had patches of rust inside and out, and one side of the shallow end of the adult pool was covered in what looked like algea. During our time in the pool, no one skimmed out the dead bugs and dirt. The housekeepers didn't clean our room until after 5 pm. There were empty bottles, chip bags, etc... on the ground throughout the property that no one cleaned.
Who I guess was the lifeguard was periodically smoking and on her cell while on duty. At one point, when she went on break, the bartender appeared to take over lifeguard duty. While I assume he was also a certified lifeguard, he remained outside of the chainlink fence surrounding the pool.
While there were designated nonsmoking rooms, there didn't appear to be any smoking areas on the grounds; guests were basically smoking everywhere - by the pool, basketball courts, outside the dining room...
The food was inconsistent. The eggs, french toast and other hot food at the breakfast buffet, as well as the coffee, was luke warm. The bagels served were still frozen. Some dinner items were quite good (i.e. catfish, mozzarella en corozza, steak) while others weren't (i.e. eggplant rollantini /w what tasted like jarred sauce, wilted lettuce in the salad). Dessert was very good. It took way too long for bar drinks to be served with dinner (we ordered a bottle of wine when the appetizer was served, but didn't get it until we were eating dessert).
It seems after the bar closes, guests continue to party outside of their rooms - the problem is the old motel has minimal soundproofing. Two rooms down from us a group was drinking, talking loudly & smoking - we asked them to quiet down a few times (young children sleeping) but it continued until about 4 am. Someone vomited outside our room. The manager told us to call them the next night if it happened again, but no one picked up when we did & no one works at the front desk after 2 am.
Other than being woken up during the night, none of these issues impacted the children, who had a good time running around and playing.
From talking to other guests, most have been going to Acra Manor for 20+ years & with large groups, so it probably has a nostalgic home-away-from-home appeal to them. As someone visiting for the first time, the pleasant staff didn't make up for the issues.
