“Small Museum in Albany”
Reviewed 1 April 2014

This museum is in downtown Albany and parking can be very difficult. The exhibits change a few times a year, so be sure to check on what is being shown since the quality can vary. A little known fact is that the local libraries have free museum passes that you can borrow for 3-7 days. If you're a local, this will save you about $10-12 per person. The second floor has some very nice sculptures but this exhibit does not change.

“Small but definitely worth the trip”
Reviewed 17 February 2014 via mobile

My family and I visited the museum during the free day on President's Day in February. My teenage kids who have been to the Louvre were even impressed.
Not great parking but there is a small lot in back. The museum is clean and very enjoyable. It's not a whole day experience but worth the trip. I estimate about 3 hours. You will enjoy your time.

Been here 4 or 5 times, usually at partners initiation. My main gripe is that it seems to just display a bunch of stuff. Not enough explaination, theme, or whatever. Just piece after piece. At the mummy exhibit there was a video of the x-raying of the mummies, and I thought, aha, this will be interesting. But not much about what the process revealed. Just pictures of the mummies going in and the images, but little in the way of what was learned or the meaning of what was seen. Small gripe - an awful lot of the written description of exhibits was between knee and thigh height, in small type. Would it be so difficult to get it up to eye level?

“An Albany Gem!”
Reviewed 9 December 2013

The Institute is one of the nations oldest museum. It is housed in a modest building and is not open every day. Really, it is more than a museum. The archives and library house the history of Albany. Exhibits change often and you will not be bored by a repeat visit. An important strength of the museum is the educational and family program. While you at the Institute visit the Egyptian mummy within hundreds of miles. There is even a dog mummy.

“Do Not Miss the Special Mummy Exhibit”
Reviewed 5 November 2013

Run to the museum and do not miss the most recent exhibit, "The Mysteries of the Albany Mummies". Pieces from the Albany collection are displayed with spectacular items from some of the most prestigious museums of the world to tell the true story of the two mummies who have been Albany residents for over 100 years. You can tour on your own or plan to arrive for a docent tour which will give you much more background on this time period and these city treasures. Children will delight in the displays and the interactive gallery where they can mummify a body and participate in other engaging activities. There's something for everyone, and the Albany Institute has done an outstanding job with this exhibit.
