“The way every hotel should operate!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 October 2007

The Hilton Hotels have a "star" program where they encourage guests to fill our a little card if an employee is deserving of special recognition during the stay. I just turned mine in reading "EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE, EVERYTIME"!

If every hotel in the country ran like this one, there would be no need for TripAdvisor ratings. The staff was astonishing. From the front desk to the guy sweeping up the already immaculate sidewalk each and every single hotel employee i passed smiled and greeted me. The young woman who checked me in on Friday night greeted me by name every time she saw me thereafter. The young man who quickly stocked and straighened up my combination sleeping room/meeting room apparently didn't know too many words in English but his brilliant smile communicated his eagerness to do a great job.

One thing i noticed that was parrticularly telling: as i was checking in, the young woman at the desk was expressing her sadness to see the gentleman ahead of me checking in again. Why? This hotel is closely associated with Albany Medical Center and many of their guests stay long term because a loved one is a patient at the hospital. She told him that she was sorry to see him checking in again because it meant his family member was not being discharged as they had hoped. Such wonderful compassion, such personal service, such a caring heart!

I travel a great deal and stay in many hotels in the course of a year. It is rare that a hotel scores a perfect 10 in my book but if i could give this place a 20 i would. Employees of this caliber only come about with sterling management. My compliments to everyone from the group sales coordinator who was kind and accomodating during my initial phone call to the last person who bid me a safe trip as we checked on our Sunday morning.

If you need to stay in Albany, this is THE place - stay here with confidence!

Stayed here for a concert at the Pepsi arena. The hotel provided a free shuttle both ways! The room was great. The bedding was especially comfortable. Overall a very pleasant stay. The staff was helpful and nice, the hotel, beautiful and clean.

This was the best HGI I've stayed at. The whole atmosphere is clean, new, and friendly. It seems to be connected to the hospital, with a Starbucks and a bank on the first floor, and the hotel lobby is on the second level. Front desk staff were unusually friendly and helpful--they took care of every detail and did it with a smile. Rooms were big, clean, and well equipped. No problems with in-room Internet access, and the gym was better than at most HGIs (includes free weights in addition to the typical cardio machines). In short, this was a fantastic stay and I would stay here again in a second. It actually feels like a higher-class hotel than a Garden Inn.

A tip about directions. The entrance is off Holland Ave., just south of New Scotland. The driveway for the parking lot is tough to spot--it actually looks like you're turning into the hospital, but if you look closely there is a small HGI sign.

This hotel is new and very clean. Like all Hilton chains there is considerable care spent on comfort. Thus, the bed is amazingly comfortable and the blankets and pillows are great. Also internet service is free, which because I have always stayed at Hilton's I took for granted until I stayed at a Sheraton. The hotel also has great towels and linens and uses Neutrogena products for their soaps and shampoos. That being said I found it amusing that they sell toothbrushes and not standard toothbrushes but the cheap generic hotel kind. They charge $0.25 for them. I think this is silly particularly since they seem to spend a lot on other luxuries.

The staff was very friendly and accomodating. I stayed there for the bar exam and the hotel did a great job of accomodating the bar students.

I was disappointed in the food however. There room service menu is quite time limited. Also there was no vegetarian food. I am a vegetarian and veggie burgers have become such a standard part of menus that I was surprised that they did not have any. The service in the restaurant is sub par. My friend and I waited for quite some time before we got our order and also before we got the bill. The menu is lacking in diversity. Its very burger heavy.

The breakfast was okay. The oatmeal is presweetened and spiced with cinnamon. That was disappointing, must diners prefer to sweeten and spice their own oatmeal. Also waiting for eggs to cook took a long time, they should probably staff another person on the grill. The wait staff though was very attentive and accomodating (breakfast is served in a different area than lunch and dinner).

The snack area is also impressively stacked with a variety of snacks as well as alocholic beverages (and non-alcoholic beverages). The windows also open in the rooms which allows for fresh air to come in. A plus!

Overall great hotel, the weakness is on the food end. Because there aren't many food options in the immediate area it would be nice to see them expand beyond a burger menu since they really have a monopoly on the immediate area.

NB: I did not have a chance to use the gym or swimming pool but I am sure that they are in great shape.

  • Liked — The hotel is clean, friendly and comfortable. It is great for the business traveler.
  • Disliked — The food options are below average. There needs to be more variety.

I have to hold a conference here, so I stayed in the hotel to check on this brand new (open maybe a week) hotel serving the medical center and most of the Union University schools (Albany Medical College, Albany College of Pharmacy, Albany Law School) and Sage Graduate school, to say nothing of the dozens of institutes and government institutions nearby. I thought immediately that this was strategic genius, to put a Starbucks and a top-of-the-line 2007 model Garden Inn next to the Hudson Valley's only major (Level 1 trauma, transplants, etc.) medical center. And what a great opportunity, I thought, to follow in the footsteps of Cleveland Clinic and other comparable medical centers that have major hotels to allow the patients served by Albany Med (basically all of western New England and the Hudson Valley) to bring family in in a place that is nice and luxurious enough to relax. This hotel will be full all of the time. They better be ready.

The area has a million people in it, and until now there were few options: big hotel-wise, you have two decent hotels near the airport (Marriott and Desmond), both with overrated restaurants and both in awful locations. Then there is one major hotel downtown, the Crowne Plaza, which can hold a conference but isn't close to the med center and has no good restaurant. The new hotel, Hampton Inn and Suites, near the Crowne Plaza has an incredible restaurant Yono's (top 3 in Albany - which is becoming a major restaurant city for 3 star places). But it is a Hampton Inn. Enough said. There is one excellent B&B on State Street and a new boutique hotel 74. But they too are a bit far from the medical center and low on services.

You could stay in Schenectady. There is a Holiday Inn that compares with, say, a bad summer camp. Or Troy. Wait. Is there a hotel in Troy? There are billions of average hotels in Albany area. But nothing with class anywhere near the key institutions of graduate education and medicine. Until this. I was blown away.

Along comes this Hilton Garden Inn. I stayed in a low-floor Suite, which had a great corner window, ate in the restaurant, which is beautiful but please somebody get them a chef and a real menu - there are bad diners with more, better food - and the "sports bar" they made up isn't open yet. I suspect this is only because they are just opening (I might have been the 10th guest by all indications - this was maybe the third day...). And there is an excellent open area with bar.

Still the key is the room quality and the wood and art and granite and the people. This is five star quality. You would never think this is a sub-chain of Hilton. It is like an Omni or Hyatt in terms of the quality of the rooms and open areas and especially the conference areas. And awesome parking, easy location. And check out the views ... remember, this is Albany right in the middle of the Berkshire/Adirondack intersection, and easily the most interesting architectural city in NYS other than New York City.

  • Liked — Luxury accommodations for the best graduate/professional school area in the Hudson Valley...at last!
  • Disliked — Restaurants not open yet - and a sports bar as the anchor?? Called the Recovery Room???

This hotel, only a week old when we stayed there, was fantastic.

The Presidential Suite was incredible. It's glass windows with views of Albany Medical Center, Albany Law School, Albany College of Pharmacy, and the Adirondack Mountains really show Albany and the University Heights neighborhood at its best.

The Suite had a large conference table, a beautiful kitchen with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, and a fireplace in the living room. Both living room and bedroom had great flatscreen TVs. This is the perfect room for hosting a party, a meeting, or an out-of-town guest who you want to impress.

The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive, and happy to accommodate our requests for whatever we needed.

We would stay here again in a heartbeat. This is THE place to stay if you have business in downtown Albany.
