This place was my favourite from our latest trip to Korea. Situated at the top of a valley amongst the forested mountains it is still and tranquil by comparison to the bustle of the Korean low lands. The road up the valley is narrow and surrounded by smallholdings. A beautiful location removed from the intensive development pervasive across Korea. We were travelling as a mixed group of Koreans (my wife’s family) and Australians (my family) and it was a favourite spot for all of us.
The hosts are warm and welcoming, inviting us into their home (on-site) for tea on arrival and departure, assisting us with any questions about the local area and setting up an outdoor wood fire stove for us to BBQ on our arrival. They have creative spirits and (amongst their other artistic endeavours) built the traditionally spirited dwellings themselves. The rooms are spacious, ondole style - no bed - you sit and sleep on mats on a toasty heated floor. The rooms all have a functional kitchenette and bathrooms. While traditional in style, the amenities are modern and comfortable. If you are a westerner, just be aware that there are no chairs or western beds – as is traditional in Korea.
You need a car if you are staying here; there are no shops nearby (basic convenience store at the bottom of the valley), no nightlife, no restaurants – perfect by us. The site is about ten minutes from the main road and half an hour drive from Gyeongju and the local tourist attractions.
Beautiful place, the house is large and very authentic. The views are out of this world. And the owners are super welcoming.
Soyoyu is a beautiful traditional Korean home. We got there late but the owner had the room all warmed for us. The room is a traditional Korean home where the floors are warmed to heat the room, and you sleep on mats. With the floor being so warm we kept the windows open to get fresh air. In the morning the owners gave us a tour of their home and their art work. We would have liked to stay longer but had other plans and had to get back on the road the next morning.. Definitely would reccommend if you are looking to experience the traditional korean lifestyle.
