“very basic but great view”
Reviewed 26 December 2013

the location is the best with this hotel, from the roof top you have a view on the sunrise behind Seongsan Ilchulbong

otherwise it's a standard hotel, no unnecessary luxury, very basic but clean, no add-ons provided, no water cooker etc. in the room either

It was conveniently located near the Mountain, so we managed to stay there, but everything was awful. Staff was insolent, irritating and didn't make the registration neither the invoice of our stay! We asked repeatedly for the invoice but he didn't make it. Room was small and with a noisy fridge. No armoir. Bathroom was small and without window nor efficient fan (it stank of humidity until the day after). We payed 50.000 won, that is a 3-star hotel price in Korea. No restaurant attached (fortunately!!). Stay away from it. There are other hotels near this one, maybe better, but no rooms available at that time and almost neither of the owners spoke english properly. There's a free parking car at the entrance

Room Tip: Room 208 got a beautiful view of the Seonsang Ilchubong.

I previously requested Trip Adv to add this hotel to introduce, but my bad for writing my review only now. My stay was in Oct 2010 and I found this hotel through Lonely Planet. LP don't really recommend the hotel because there are much better choice of minbak in sleepy town Seongsan. However, due to minbak only have tel numbers & I have language barrier, Ilchulbong Hotel is the only one that has a valid website and email address. I emailed my request for reservation to them and surprisingly they replied in English. I got a double room for KW39,000 which IMO is super cheap. Their email:------

Please take note that the website will show you very nice deco of the hotel as such, but the true fact is, the hotel is way past its heydays. Seongsanri is a very small town that is rural and their nearest attractions are Seongsan Ilchulbong & Udo Island. Tourists nowadays come by coaches or own transports that hardly anyone would want to stay overnight in this town anymore. Those who stay in town are most touring cyclists. It's a slient town at night with only the locals but eateries were still open. Hence, you get the idea that not much business the hotel is getting and hence not much upgrading & care for the hotel rooms & facilities.

Room for a double is compact. The best you get in a room is a tv. No wifi or internet connections. The furnitures we saw were worn from use and laminates were peeling off. The bathroom was old and fixtures were rusty. Due to it's proximity to the sea, all the metal fixtures had those sea-caused algae. The bathroom has a bathtub but we wouldn't linger too long inside because it reeked of sewage smell. However, the bed, pillows and blankets were clean and no bed-bugs. The hotel is in dire of business that they accept any customer and the locals used it for their rendevous. But between rooms and corridors without much people, love-making sound could be heard from the room opposite ours due to its quiet surrounding and despite 2 doors (make it 4 doors) shut. The couple only check-in for a few hours in the afternoon and at night, there were no other occupants on our level. No eerie feeling though.

Having said all these, the hotel location is good and located on the main street. It is the only one in the town that has the signboard 'Hotel' up on top. The rest are minbak or condos. Ask for the room facing Seongsan Ilchulbong if you want the view from your room. The hotel looks like it was family-run but the staff there are very friendly and would try to communicate with you if you need help. IMO, this may not be the best choice but it certainly was my choice due to easy reservation by email. You might want to look around town for more choices before deciding on this hotel. I believe a full-house situation will not happen in that town, so take your pick.
