“AN EXCELLENT BOUTIQUE HOTEL”
Reviewed 25 January 2013

When you get off the main road and enter a small dirt road to reach the hotel, one gets a bit concerned. All concerns vanish when you arrive at the sparkling white compound of the Villa. The hotel is quiet, but welcoming. We were ushered to our ground floor suite which was stunning. Large is an understatement. Nice terrace, quiet and very private. The Villa sits on immaculate lawns. The dining room, we understand, is a converted stable. The food was good as was the attention and service. I refused to leave the comfort of the hotel the 2 nights there, except for a very short drive to see the handicrafts at Bentota. I really welcomed the serenity and calmness that the property brought to me. A truly exceptional experience in a truly excellent hotel.

The Villa Bentota is a small boutique hotel with a luxury touch. We stayed in a suite ,which was absolutely amazing under any point of view: large room with all conforts, huge washroom, nice terrace, confortable bed. The service is excellent. Breakfast is "à la carte", with service at the table in the small refined restaurant of the Hotel. It is rich and delicious.
There are two swimming pools, a small one, and a larger one. Even this second one is not too big, but it is located in the beautiful garden with palm trees, the water is kept at the perfect temperature and it is just incredibly romantic to swim there, even at the sunset. The furniture, design and décor in all the common area is just beautiful, without being too pretentious. There is also a small bar facing the garden.
The beach is at walking distance. It is a sandy large beach, almost empty. The sunset on the sea is amazing. In order to reach the beach, you have to cross a road. At the time we went there, there were ongoing works and it was not clear wether they were building a rail trak or just a larger road. This could affect the peacefulness of the place in the future.
I strongly reccomend it to all the couples. Take the suite: it is not cheap but not too expensive either, for what you get. No doubt it's value for money.

Room Tip: Take the suite: it is not cheap but not too expensive either, considering what you get. No doubt it...

When we arrived at the hotel it was low season and very quiet, however the staff made us feel so welcome. This stunning property is your home away from home and we were upgraded on arrival. The first night the air conditioning broke and the staff were great and just upgraded us again to Suite 2. This room was huge in vlack and white and had a fantastic private terrace overlooking the gardens, ocean and swimming pool. The food is probably the best you will experience in Bentota and is a stunning outdoor courtyard lit by candles. The choice is excellent with local curried fish dishes to their own homemade pizzas. This property is great for those with a passion for interior design as the thought and detail put into the look and feel is really exceptional. There is a wonderful bar where you can soak up the evening breeze with a great range of drinks and cocktails. Knowing most of the other properties in this area, if you are looking for a charming, relaxing environment in stunning gardens and a wonderful long pool with beautifully designed rooms then this is the place to stay. If we return to Bentota, this is where we will stay and if you are staying elsewhere then be sure to spend an evening at the Cafe Paradise Road restaurant - you won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: Suite 2 is perfect for the wonderful terrace and day bed or to enjoy breakfast in privacy whilst enj...

We holidayed here more about a year ago. This property is right next to Taj Exotica, so has some prime areas of the beach right next to it. The lawns were immaculate and everything was done up in typical Bawa style which we love.
There were sarongs in the room which was an extra nice touch. Food was absolutely amazing. Would go back there in a heartbeat.

This hotel exceeded all expectations. Being a Bawa property, the grounds and hotel were just exceptional, awe inspiring indeed. The interior decoration to accompany such design was superb. A hotel matching that of top European boutique hotels.
The service was excellent, the food outstanding - possibly the best food we had on our trip.
The train line, which was barely noticeable, added to the romance of the place. A short walk to a beautiful swimable beach was fantastic. We completely lost ourselves in the hotel for the three days we were there.
I don't have to say much in this review, the property speaks for itself. It is outstanding.
On our final day, we decided to go deep sea fishing and having caught a beautiful big fish, the chef promptly cooked it up to the usual five star standard for lunch. It was the perfect ending to our Sri Lanka vacation.

Despite some of the negative reviews about this place, I still booked, and I am so happy I did. Time after time, I believe people come on TA to rant and rave and complain for no reason. This hotel deserves no negative feedback. Sure a suggestion is valid, however to allocate an average or poor score is completely unfair. This hotel has charm, beauty, exceptional design and creativity to rival that of the top small hotels in the world...

Room Tip: We had a suite which was lovely. It had a shared balcony which was huge, fortunately no one was stay...

We stayed here for one night at the end of november and stayed in suite 3. This hotel is literally right next door to club villa hotel. The hotel is one of the most beautiful places I have ever stayed, the room was beautiful and massive, the bar area and pool so beautifully designed. The hotel is not on the beach, you need to walk over the railway line and then you walk a hundred metres or so and you are there, but you need to walk along further to swim in the sea. You can't see the sea from the hotel. The railway line runs right along the bottom of the garden, this was unique and added some enjoyment whilst sun bathing, the noise was Ok and didn't interrupt our sleep.

We ate at the hotel for lunch and dinner and the food was expensive comparatively and really really not good, the worst food we had in Sri Lanka, If you stay here I would recommend you eat out. I appreciate this could be what we ordered and am not one to complain but the chicken tandoori I had was absolutely awful.

Overall beautiful setting and this is why i scored highly, but if you want a hotel on the beach then this isn't for you and finally hotel was let down by awful food which is a shame as with the setting it could be amazing.

I paid to stay here , going by the fantastic reviews, but when I reached there it turned out to be a scary damp and dark old house.
I had paid sgd 700 for 2 days but this place was so bad that we gave up the money and bought ourselves another place.
I wouldn't stay here even if you paid me to, so I didn't mind losing my 700$ , they obviously did not refund a cent, which is ok. But then this really is a warning for all those who go by the reviews on trip advisor, for some reason this Place does not live up.
The good reviews might be of club villa which is another property next door.
But paradise road villa is totally avoidable.
And btw there is no beach view at all.
And the beach itself is inaccessible. You need to cross the rail line and the bushes to get to the beach.
The balcony is infested with big red ants.
We were bitten by mosquitoes within 15 mins of our stay.
