“A beautifully designed resort by a nearly secluded beach - great for couples!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 April 2013

We had a wonderful stay at The Villa Bentota. The resort grounds are absolutely stunning - the design is very well thought out and attention is given to details. We stayed in suite 3 which has a open area to have tea. The beddings were comfortable and we had very good sleep. The trains goes by the bentota beach so you do hear it but I didn't find it too disturbing.

The pool area is a great place to chill and we spent our afternoons lounging by the pool. The staff would come by with iced water which is great on a hot day! Also, complimentary afternoon tea cake and tea is served by the pool.

The beach is just a minute's walk away. You need to cross the rail track to get across. Quiet and clean. It is almost like a private beach. There were hardly anyone besides the other guests from two boutique resorts (Paradise Road and Club Villa). I think that The Villa could place some of its deck chairs by the beach for their guests - this would make it even more perfect!

We saw dream-like sunsets on two of the evenings while we were there.

The food served at the resort is excellent (albeit pricier than food elsewhere). We tried almost all the Sri Lankan dishes during our stay and they were all fantastic. Food service may be a little slow but there is no hurry when you are on a beach vacation.

Wifi is only available at the reception area and sometimes in the other public areas. We were allowed to check out late since there were no other guests coming in that day.

ome of the resort's staff are friendlier than others and service may be a little slower and even patchy at times. But this seems like the phenomenon in many of the Sri Lankan hotels that we stayed in.

The hotel itself is magnificent. It’s a designer’s dream! It has an authentic charm and you can keep making pictures everywhere because everything looks so beautiful. It is really ‘out of a magazine’ like some previous review says.
Unfortunately, we have to agree with Julie S (see her review) that once the initial high is over, you cannot help feeling disappointed about the service and the staff.
We arrived quite late. It was already dark. Our driver (who was supposed to stay with us for 5 days) was rudely turned down, since there is no driver accommodation at the hotel. He had to go out and look for a place to sleep himself. Now, this is also a fault of his company, they had to check it before arrival, but we sure felt embarrassed by the way the reception staff treated the man.
After they showed us our room (which was indeed beautiful, just as the pictures on the website promised) we went for dinner. Bentota was our last stop on our journey and we had experienced a lot of genuine kindness from the staff at our previous hotels. At The Villa we were unpleasantly surprised by the restaurant staff’s attitude. They were almost rude. No smiles, no kindness, … They kept that attitude until the day we checked out. Then suddenly the smiles appeared (as if they were happy we left).
Next day we had the chance to see the resort in all its glory and indeed it is wonderful. But like the previous review mentioned, after a few hours the poolside looks like a mess. When people leave, no one cleans up. Used towels, glasses, clothes … everything stays where it is and you have to search for a clean place yourself.
Since this hotel presents itself as boutique luxury (and so are the prices!)we surely expected a little more. We are happy to have stayed here, because of the beauty of the premises, but we would definitely choose another hotel the next time. I think there are a lot of alternatives that are as beautiful and with the same authentic character, but with better service!

Room Tip: The rooms are really what they promise to be from their website. So check the site if you want to se...

This is a beautiful house, very nicely restored and located one minute from a pristine and largely deserted beach. Facilities are excellent (large pool, delightful garden, nice restaurant). Our superior room (not suite) was really excellent, and had a pleasant (shared) balcony overlooking the garden. Getting anywhere in the area was made easy through the services of a tuk-tuk driver who was constantly waiting outside the gate. The only disappointments were the restaurant (good for breakfast but stupidly expensive for dinner) and the lack of visible hands-on management, which resulted in a very patchy service experience. We did, however, enjoy our stay thoroughly - better than I would imagine we would have in any of the three or four other hotels we visited including much more expensive ones - and we would return.

Room Tip: I would thoroughly recommend our superior room (No 6). We did meet fellow guests, who had booked la...

We stayed here for a week and just loved everything about it. We were in room 2 which had a terrace (definitely recommend that you get a room with outside space) and was right next to the train track but, honestly, we didn't mind the trains at all. Our room was gorgeous (I loved all the stripes) and I really adored the very cool style of the hotel: it was calming and cooling but without being obtrusive,
The pool was just lovely and the beach was like something out of a Bacardi advert - white sands, fringed with palm trees and absolutely no one else on it.
But it was the food that really took the place to the next level: it is almost certainly the best in the area, and it's available all day long. I wished there were more vegetarian Sri Lankan options but otherwise it was fantastic.
Such a lovely hotel - I wish I were back there now!

Room Tip: It's definitely worth it to spend a little more and get a room with a terrace

I recently stayed at Villa Bentota for two nights. My husband and I had so looked forward to this portion of our trip as we had just spent two weeks in India and other parts of Sri Lanka. Bentota was going to be our two days of pure relaxation and peace.

We are American and travel very, very frequently. We both work in the travel industry for leading international travel magazines and review hotels often for our company's print and digital publications. With this said, we have stayed at some of the worlds most exquisite and unique properties, being fortunate to have experienced truly "the best" in terms of boutique and luxury travel.

Villa Bentota, in all essence, does not live up to its promise or marketing efforts. It is a stunning hotel with beautiful spaces and and an authentically vintage, antique ambience that I personally love. The design is interesting enough and the grounds are beautifully manicured.

But, unfortunately, once the initial high you get from the beautiful surroundings fades away, you realize that the hotel has a LOT of work to do before it can compete in the international travel market. Sri Lanka is a "newly discovered" travel destination for Westerners, and it's beautiful. But, those creating hotels to cater to people who have experienced the best should pay much closer attention to the details.

From the moment of check-in until check-out, we experienced some of the worst service we have ever seen at a hotel promoting itself in this luxury category. Examples...

No one was available for check-in upon our arrival and we had to search for 10 minutes to find someone at 10:00 pm to check us in. The food is wonderful, if they get your order right, but chances are your fresh papaya juice ordered at the beginning of breakfast will arrive at the end. By the pool, you my have to search for someone to bring you towels to use and then ask them again to bring you a drink menu, ask them again to order that drink and search for them to actually get that drink in your hand. It may take them two to three hours to clean up the pool area after someone has left, leaving the chairs and tables looking quite messy and dirty - not the best ambience.

When you finally get that drink, don't mind the frequent trains bustling by the pool area as the hotel literally just in front of train tracks that take people on the journey from Colombo to Galle. You will have to cross these tracks to go to the beach - which, by the way, has no chairs, towel service or people to ensure your comfort. The wifi in the hotel is very, very spotty so don't bank on it if you have important things to do via internet. Also, don't mind the lack of help when you are lugging your bags from your room to the lobby to check out...those who are supposed to help you are talking amongst themselves while you are struggling.

All in all, I really had high hopes for this hotel. We were so very excited to experience the romance of it. But, the owner, Mr. Shanth Fernando, should definitely focus more on assembling a staff with greater attention to detail than promoting his hotel as the "it" destination in Sri Lanka.

Loved the idea that you can be at the pool all day, being served drinks and food all daylong. Had dinner every night there and the food was to die for every time. Friendly staff and absolutely amazing management...very attentive and professional. There are many areas around the villa where you can just chill and watch the day go by or hang out with friends. All rooms are unique with its local decor and paintings that you can actually purchase. Staying for day or two, or even a week gives you energy and you would love to go back to such a tranquil place. We stayed at suite with small pool and loved the layout of the place. And to end the beautiful stay we were amazed till the very last moment...Our flight back was at 4am, we came to check out at 2pm and had the mind set that we will spend the entire afternoon and evening wondering Bentota, where there is little to see. The management were so nice to have us stay in the room till late evening. That is something you don't find in any hotel out there.

My husband and I stayed here this month. Everything about this place is amazing, from the design and decor of the rooms to the pool area surrounded by lush palms which is a slice of heaven. I could write an essay how amazing this place is but in short...it's clean, it's a wonderful place to relax, the staff are so helpful that they will go out of their way for you. And there are wonderful little touches such as slices of cake for guests in the afternoon which are bought out by the pool, and lovely treats such as home made chocolates that are left in your room in the evenings. The food is to die for - absolutely everything from breakfast to dinner is fresh and tasty and the presentation is amazing. I loved every single minute of being here and I can't recommend it enough.
