my wife and i spent 3 and a half nights here. we generally loved it but it was hit and miss and agree with previous reviews...

pro's setting - lovely villa style property set among the coconut tree's, train tracks running through the grounds which you cross to get to the beach - add's to the setting. pool nice if anything very warm thanks to the superb weather. food excellent - have the sri lankan breakfast and take your time to enjoy it all. we found the wait staff very good and friendly. beach beautiful and not chaotic and full of deckchairs which we liked.

con's = we arrived at 9 pm and no welcome, gates shut, half a dozen people around but no one did anything - our driver was hassling them to get our luggage which i did myself. service around the pool needs to be ramped up - towels and beds and glasses cleared away - the pool boys were not rushed off their feet and this needs to be much slicker. wifi - patchy - at these prices get it sorted. check out - took me ringing the UK to sort out the right balance to pay which is very frustrating!

all in all we liked it a lot and will be back if we are in the region again. some teething problems need sorting out asap.

We recently got married at the Villa, it was the most amazing location for our perfect day. The Villa itself is stunning, true Bawa style & extraordinary interior/exterior design. The beach in front of the villa is clean, safe & largely deserted. The rooms are beautiful, airy & light. The staff were so friendly & professional, nothing was too much trouble & their service was outstanding. I can't wait to go back to the Villa again & would highly recommend this place to anyone, all our friends and family were equally impressed.

Since we stayed at the resort there have been a few other reviews of the place that I have read. I don't agree with them all but that of DennisandVera (aside from their agreement with the self referential review by the well travelled blah blah magazine people below "Beautiful hotel and idea in theory...horrifically [sic] execution") chimes well with our experience.

The hotel itself is unique and obviously a great deal of care has been taken with almost every detail. The rooms were lovely, the grounds expansive and well cared for, and the pool area individually styled and very relaxing.

I thought that walking through to the beach over the railway track was fantastic and we took the train we had seen and heard rattle past the hotel hourly down from Bentota to Hikkaduwa one day which was great fun (how anyone could find a creaky old train line running outside the hotel anything but charming bemuses me but it takes all sorts).

The beach itself was really nice, though the sea can be a bit choppy and you can, if you want, get access to the same beach from much cheaper hotels nearby. Those who lament a lack of loungers, towels and helpers may be missing the point I fear - it is a quiet and picturesque place with enough waves for a body board at least.

If there is a criticism, it is that the laid back, relaxed feel of the place seems to permeate into some of the people who work there. There was rarely anyone around, at reception and at the bar in particular. When people did eventually come along to help they were invariably charming (surly restaurant staff aside) but it did tend to take a bit longer than it probably should. I also thought things shut down a bit early at night.

Having said of all this, I would go again in an instant.

Room Tip: We stayed in suite 3 - it was very nice

We had a wonderful stay at The Villa Bentota. The resort grounds are absolutely stunning - the design is very well thought out and attention is given to details. We stayed in suite 3 which has a open area to have tea. The beddings were comfortable and we had very good sleep. The trains goes by the bentota beach so you do hear it but I didn't find it too disturbing.

The pool area is a great place to chill and we spent our afternoons lounging by the pool. The staff would come by with iced water which is great on a hot day! Also, complimentary afternoon tea cake and tea is served by the pool.

The beach is just a minute's walk away. You need to cross the rail track to get across. Quiet and clean. It is almost like a private beach. There were hardly anyone besides the other guests from two boutique resorts (Paradise Road and Club Villa). I think that The Villa could place some of its deck chairs by the beach for their guests - this would make it even more perfect!

We saw dream-like sunsets on two of the evenings while we were there.

The food served at the resort is excellent (albeit pricier than food elsewhere). We tried almost all the Sri Lankan dishes during our stay and they were all fantastic. Food service may be a little slow but there is no hurry when you are on a beach vacation.

Wifi is only available at the reception area and sometimes in the other public areas. We were allowed to check out late since there were no other guests coming in that day.

ome of the resort's staff are friendlier than others and service may be a little slower and even patchy at times. But this seems like the phenomenon in many of the Sri Lankan hotels that we stayed in.

The hotel itself is magnificent. It’s a designer’s dream! It has an authentic charm and you can keep making pictures everywhere because everything looks so beautiful. It is really ‘out of a magazine’ like some previous review says.
Unfortunately, we have to agree with Julie S (see her review) that once the initial high is over, you cannot help feeling disappointed about the service and the staff.
We arrived quite late. It was already dark. Our driver (who was supposed to stay with us for 5 days) was rudely turned down, since there is no driver accommodation at the hotel. He had to go out and look for a place to sleep himself. Now, this is also a fault of his company, they had to check it before arrival, but we sure felt embarrassed by the way the reception staff treated the man.
After they showed us our room (which was indeed beautiful, just as the pictures on the website promised) we went for dinner. Bentota was our last stop on our journey and we had experienced a lot of genuine kindness from the staff at our previous hotels. At The Villa we were unpleasantly surprised by the restaurant staff’s attitude. They were almost rude. No smiles, no kindness, … They kept that attitude until the day we checked out. Then suddenly the smiles appeared (as if they were happy we left).
Next day we had the chance to see the resort in all its glory and indeed it is wonderful. But like the previous review mentioned, after a few hours the poolside looks like a mess. When people leave, no one cleans up. Used towels, glasses, clothes … everything stays where it is and you have to search for a clean place yourself.
Since this hotel presents itself as boutique luxury (and so are the prices!)we surely expected a little more. We are happy to have stayed here, because of the beauty of the premises, but we would definitely choose another hotel the next time. I think there are a lot of alternatives that are as beautiful and with the same authentic character, but with better service!

Room Tip: The rooms are really what they promise to be from their website. So check the site if you want to se...

This is a beautiful house, very nicely restored and located one minute from a pristine and largely deserted beach. Facilities are excellent (large pool, delightful garden, nice restaurant). Our superior room (not suite) was really excellent, and had a pleasant (shared) balcony overlooking the garden. Getting anywhere in the area was made easy through the services of a tuk-tuk driver who was constantly waiting outside the gate. The only disappointments were the restaurant (good for breakfast but stupidly expensive for dinner) and the lack of visible hands-on management, which resulted in a very patchy service experience. We did, however, enjoy our stay thoroughly - better than I would imagine we would have in any of the three or four other hotels we visited including much more expensive ones - and we would return.

Room Tip: I would thoroughly recommend our superior room (No 6). We did meet fellow guests, who had booked la...
