“Chic Beachside Retreat”
Reviewed 25 October 2013

I stayed here with my 2 year old daughter and husband during our recent trip to Sri Lanka and I can't stop thinking about going back. The hotel property is serene, beautiful and well appointed. It feels like you are living in your own colonial bungalow! This is a truly a must stay to those whom are Geoffrey Bawa fans.

Check in: It was extremely smooth and easy. We were greeted by big smiles and seeing that we had a 2 year old, they didn't hold us up. Cold towels were offered which was a welcome relief from the heat!

Ambience: The hotel grounds are well kept and the colonial buildings are beautiful. There are plenty of open air rooms for reading, comfy couches and little courtyards which gives the hotel a cosy, homely feel. It's very peaceful in the day, with the hotel staff always attentive but not imposing.

Beach: The nearby beach was a little too rough for swimming but it's still just a stone's throw away from a nice morning run or afternoon play on the sands.

Rooms: The rooms are spacious and well decorated. The air con isn't very cold though but that was alright. Our room (executive suit) opened out into the lawn and had a beautiful sitting area for playing and reading. The bathroom was large and had plenty of room for the 3 of us.

Wifi: Unfortunately, the wifi was a little unreliable while we were there.

Food: The food was so heavenly! It really was the best thing about the hotel! We had the Jaggery Sundae EVERYDAY! Everything was delicious and they were able to make us suitable food for our daughter. Breakfast was always a delight an it soon became very difficult to choose what to eat because everything was so tasty.

Service: Wonderful, attentive staff that are not too imposing. On one night, there was a power trip in our room and the staff rushed to us to try and fix it even though it was late at night.

Altogether it was a wonderful stay, a quiet little boutique gem that is perfect for relaxing.

Room Tip: Pick the rooms on the ground floor.

Stayed at this lovely boutique property for two nights in Oct 2013. We were put up in the executive suite, which was quite an experience. The hotel interiors are tastefully done, with a lot of attention to detail. The staff was friendly and attentive. The food was very tasty, although the menu could be more elaborate.

Room Tip: The suites are very spacious. We stayed at suite 7. highly recommended.

Only stopped in for lunch which was outstanding with a great mix of local dishes and international dishes for the kids. Had a look round - ideal for couples, not so good for kids as a quiet location. Beautiful quiet beach a 50m walk over a very quiet railway line. There is a small shop which had high quality gifts at very good prices. Service was understated but first rate. Lots of quiet shady places to read a book or relax. When we were there in October only appeared to be a handful of guests so the ideal place to chill out

What a delight staying in this amazing old mansion. We lashed out and stayed in a suite and it was such a pleasure. We were pampered by the staff but there were very few guests for them to service as it was not "season" time. The beach was not at its best but was still nice to dip into in the mornings. The pool more than made up for this.
The manicured grounds and artistic alcoves made it a constant pleasure to the senses. The food was pricey, but of a really high standard.
The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was luxurious. However, the TV had some technical issues but we hardly used it anyway.
Also, despite being told there were only a few trains a day, there actually were quite a few, up to 20 on one of the days, but its not really a problem although you need to be alert when crossing the tracks to get to the beach.

Room Tip: The suites are really worth it if you can afford to pay a bit more.

My husband and I recently spent 2 nights at the Villa Bentota. The first night was awful. We were given a standard room. It looked like a pretty box. There were shutters instead of blinds and we felt really claustrophobic and depressed in the room. Even the bathroom was grey and dingy. To make matters worse, during the night, the power on our ac packed up with a loud noise. It was so loud that we thought there was a train going through our room! It woke our little baby up and then we were up all night with no ac.

The manager, Daham, was very courteous, helpful and competent. He arranged for us to be upgraded to a suite. The suite was beautiful, light and airy. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our second night at the Villa. If only, the first night was as pleasant. The manager also arranged massages. My husbands massage was great but unfortunately mine was not so good. The masseuse was unprofessional. It seemed like she couldn't really be bothered to give a massage and was just rubbing oil on me. She also placed her mobile on the bed which kept vibrating near my legs which was irritating. The room again was like a box and Mosquitos flying around everywhere.

We found it really odd that there was a train track right behind the pool. Even though the beach was close, it felt wrong carrying our baby over the train track to get to the beach! I also felt the train was really loud.

The food in the restaurant was the best we had in Sri Lanka. The curries were so sumptuous. My only criticism was that it was expensive by Sri Lankan standards.

Even though the service was lovely and the boutique hotel beautiful, it had no buzz whatsoever. There were only 2 other guests and it felt like a ghost town. Both times at breakfast, my husband and I were the only ones in the restaurant. The bar area was always empty, and no bar men serving either. Perhaps this was due to it being low season so I guess it shouldn't be a problem during the peak season.

By the way, there is no wi-fi in the rooms. Something they should look into....

Room Tip: Suite 4 is the best....

Dear Madam,

Thank you for posting your review on your recent experience at Paradise Road The Villa Bentota! We value our guests' comments and use them constructively to allow us to continually improve our services.

As with all reviews received, we do an internal check with all staff concerned. Daham confirmed that you had booked a Villa Room for your stay and were allocated Superior Room 7 which features a large shared balcony and one of the largest bathrooms in the category with a separate bathtub and shower.
Shutters are present only in the bathroom, whilst Roman blinds feature on the bedroom french doors.

We sincerely apologise for the unexpected malfunction in the air conditioning and understand that staff attended to it before you alerted them as they heard the noise and thought it was resolved within 20min. However, we understand that the air conditioner did not cool thereafter. We sincerely wish you had alerted us, but understand that with a small child, moving rooms at that time despite the heat may have been more difficult for you.
We are pleased you enjoyed the features of the Superior Suite you were upgraded to due to the inconvenience experienced.

We are terribly sorry for the poor massage treatment you experienced and all points mentioned are not acceptable and will be attended to to ensure they are not repeated. We do apologize for the mosquitoes and will ensure next time that more is done to repel them in advance of guests' massages. Mosquitoes are a battle throughout our tropical island.

The train track is a feature of our property and enjoyed by many. There are a few who find it a hindrance and we do understand that. We and neighbouring properties have alerted the authorities about the 'horn' of the train which can be loud, we are yet to see action taken. Again, it is a feature which is not appreciated by everyone and we are sorry that it inconvenienced you.

September / October are the quietest months of the year at hotels on the South Coast and therefore why you would have enjoyed more privacy than perhaps wanted! December, January through till April are the best months to visit the coast and therefore are a lot busier. However, we do find many guests who enjoy the quiet of the hotel during this season and don't wish to venture to the beach which is not pleasant at this time of year.

Our property has complimentary wi-fi in all public areas. We do not offer it in all the rooms, although we do in our Colombo hotel which is frequented by business travellers.

We hope to welcome you again to The Villa Bentota!

Yours in Service,

The Management

A friend and I spent two wonderful days at The Villa Bentota. I had a first floor suite (suite 3) and my friend had a ground floor suite (suite 2). This place is outstandingly beautiful with fantastic public spaces and gorgeous art everywhere. The pool is huge. Our suites were beautifully designed in blacks and white. The staff are attentive and unobtrusive. The beach, while too rough for swimming, is great for walks. I would definitely stay here again. It's not cheap but it is the perfect place for unwinding. We had a driver so if we felt the need to go places that was easy. There is not much in Bentota. After two weeks in Sri Lanka. I thought The Villa was the best accommodation we stayed in and believe me there are some excellent places across this wonderful country.

Room Tip: Go for a first floor suite, they are more private.

We stayed here for four nights with our two children aged 6 and 3. It was the luxury accommodation part of our trip and it lived up to its reputation. The location on the beach is fantastic, but it is The Villa itself that is totally beautiful. As others have said, it feels more like the rambling house it once was than a hotel. Our room was fine for all of us, (we had a single bed added in which the children shared) with a lovely big balcony and we were far away enough from other guests that we didn't disturb them or vice versa. Having so many separate lounge areas in the hotel means that you can find your own (beautiful) space. Although it seems more like a couples paradise, the children were made very welcome and loved having the beautiful grounds to run around in, as well as the beach and the pool.

Food was fantastic and we ate at the hotel more than we planned for this reason. We visited Club Villa next door for a few meals (which we had considered originally but it was hosting a wedding so not available) and while also lovely with good food we were totally satisfied we'd made the right choice staying at The Villa. The only slight downside was the front desk, not exactly the warmest welcome, however most of the staff were very friendly and helpful. Would and have highly recommend.
