Just returned from a three week stay at the taj. A big hotel but right on the beach. The swimming pool is on the roof terrace and if you want to sunbathe here you will need to be up to bag a bed before 6.30 am. There are plenty of sun beds available in the gardens which look onto the beach. we went bed and breakfast as there are plenty of restaurants outside the hotel that are good to eat in. There is Malli's, an upmarket fish restaurant, The golden grill, Susantha's and three or four good beach restaurants that may not be busy but the food is fresh and good. The best for us, was one called Sun and Sea. Half board is ok but it is the usual buffet style of food. there are plenty of tuk tuk drivers at the hotel that will take you out and about. We used a very nice, careful dirver called Suresh. p.s. be sure to take mosquito repellent for going out at night and also for use in the room - we had to have our room sprayed every other night for mosquitos.

Lovely hotel - superb location and amazing public rooms, like all Taj Hotels. Ok, the rooms are a bit tired (we are in deluxe sea view room and the bathroom needs to be updated) but service excellent and the room is very clean and nice comfortable bed.

Yes, the food and drink is expensive but loads of good restaurants to visit nearby at fraction of Taj prices.

Amazing spa at excellent prices - much cheaper and better than UK!

We stayed here for a night (2 rooms / 4 adults) & i must say that the hotel is fantastic! Our room was beautiful with a lovely bed that provided views of the sea. The amenities were perfect & a special mention must be made of the toiletries. They were really top class!

The first coffee we had wasn't good, though they immediately changed it. The food was pretty decent - standard American breakfast with Sri Lankan delicacies.

The hotel's location is fantastic & though the beach is not a private one, it's very clean nevertheless. The swimming pool was clean & I especially loved the pool bar here.

The staff was very good & the hotel is indeed one of the finest hotels of Taj.

Special mention - the gift they gave us on departure was a really nice gesture! :-)

Tripadvisor guests have picked up all the strong and weak points about this hotel.
Yes, it has a great location above a beautful stretch of long sandy beach, stretching away both ways from the hotel (although the waves are usually big enough to worry less confident swimmers); it has a very large and attractive swimming pool with a swim-up bar serving pina colados etc; the bedrooms are fine, with large-sized beds and good air conditioning; and, in general, it's a well-maintained upmarket resort complex.
And there's the rub: it's definitely a resort complex with all the downsides that go with such set-ups. Many guests get up at dawn to go down to book loungers; the best positions were usually gone before 7.30am (I noticed this when going for a walk and was sorely tempted to throw their wretched towels and books into the pool). Worse - the hotel was full in early February and there weren't really enough loungers and brollies to go around - it was usually a struggle to find a shaded place from 9.30am onwards. Pool-side service was, as others have mentioned, very, very slow. The hotel food is bland, with only one restaurant included in the half-board deals and it quickly became very montonous. The other restaurants are better, particularly the small outdoor Shack above the beach, but in truth no-one will be coming here for the food alone. Our room on the 6th floor (the superior Orchid rooms) was fine, although the bathroom was small and a bit scruffy. The overall impression was of a good quality, but not luxurious, all-inclusive resort complex. Perhaps I sound more critical than I intend; overall, we enjoyed our fortnight here, but we'd wonder if it's worth the 24-hour door-to-door journey from Ireland, via London. The killer on the way out is the long transfer from Colombo airport to the hotel - more than 3 hours - after the long flight. A couple of things worth doing: we had a lovely lunch on the terrace of the former home of architect Geoffrey Bawa a few miles away, and also a very nice lunch at the Oman Galle hotel in the Forty area of Galle.

Arrived at Taj Exotica with high expectations, I had been there before several years before and was excited to be back, especially with the tour group. But my excitement sooned turned to dissappointment, when several things started to go wrong.
Firstly loud music everywhere, from the beach, from the hotel. Secondly no hot water, thirdly our request for a table inside was refused even though tables were available.
Service by the pool area, was terrible and non existant. Later on talking to the manager who eventually got our tour party a table inside, even though they insisted they did not have room, suddenly found room. To top it off, one of our tour party was accused of putting water in the bottles in the mini bar, which he did not...we were asked to pay for it.
We wont be staying here again

We stayed at the Taj Exotica, Bentota for 3 nights in a Superior Sea Facing Room in November 2009 on our Honeymoon..

The pickup from the Airport was nice, with a fresh n clean Toyota Corolla and an English speaking Driver - Nihal..

The drive from colombo to the Taj is about 2 hours 30 minutes, traffic being the main reason.

The Taj reception staff was very courteous.. as soon as we told them we are on our honeymoon, they gave us a room on a higher floor and after check-in a complimentary bottle of wine and a chocolate pastry came in to our room - a pleasant surprise.

The hotel room was like a standard one, with all amenities, but the view from the balcony was really nice.. we could sit in the open for our cup of tea, enjoy the sea view and the cool breeze...

The hotel's most recommendable feature are its Chinese and Indian theme restaurants and the yummy indian and continental food choices available for breakfast...

The pool side bar takes the cake.. taking a dip in the evening and sipping on a drink or king coconut water is heavenly..

the beach was also good fun, since one can rent mini surf boards and enjoy the waves ... its a very clean and safe beach.. and there is also the beach volleyball...

we spent an entire evening doing watersports near the Taj, jet ski, tube ride etc and this is something we would recommend everyone to do...

In the nights, the Bar at the Taj has a band playing live music and the bartenders are really friendly and make it fun to hang around till the wee hours..

All in all, it was the perfect beginning to a lazy honeymoon vacation.. if you are in Bentota.. the Taj is a great place to stay..

Love
Akshat n Pooja

Having spent 2 weeks touring Sri Lanka staying at 3 other excellent hotels it was a real disappointment to encounter this truly scruffy room(room number 316). It had cracks all round the ceiling, the bathroom caulk was black there were stains on the walls, doors and furniture. The top edges of the switches were black with grime and the light shades full of cobwebs, etc.
After 15 minutes I went back to the duty manager to say that I was very disappointed with the room that it was very scruffy and not what I expected of a 5 star hotel. She sensing I was angling for a room change immediately said no other rooms were available and she would tell housekeeping. Housekeeing arrived and I pointed out the probelms. While out the next day we returned to find room had been blitzed. New furniture, ceiling filled and repainted, bath recaulked, cobwebs gone from lampshades and a thorough cleaning done. Nevertheless, there were still things not right and with only 2 days to go on our holiday we just got on with it. At no stage did the management return to ask if we were happy. They have a terrific setting and just need to refurb this room and any others like it. The restaurant was not well organised - a buffet service. It was not uncommon to get up for a starter to return and findsomeone else on your table. Food OK. Would definitely avoid TAJ hotels in future based on this experience.
