Bentota Beach by Cinnamon
Ranked #7 of 25 Hotels in Bentota
Reviewed 18 January 2011

The hotel is well located, just off the Colombo - Galle road and adjacent to the railway line in Bentota, and in an extensive garden/park which borders directly on to the Bentota river on one side and access to the long and wide beach on the other side.
The rooms/balconies, with view on to either the river or gardens/beach, are spacious, very clean, but not exactly comfortable. The service is generally very good, personnel very helpful and friendly, buffet restaurant and food is ok ('tourist standard), and lounge with live music / entertainment nice and relaxing - but sometimes with the A/C in overdrive (thought to be for driving guests to bed at night!).
With plenty of sun beds, pool, bar and snack bar, the garden/park is ideal for relaxing, and a fence, with security guards, between the garden/park and beach is cetainly a plus if only wanting peace and quiet - and not being continually pestered by beach boys / vendors. Long walks along the super beach are a must - but not if scared of being continually pestered (where are you from, what's your name, where you staying, what's your room / tel. number, want a ....., etc.).
Opinion: One of the best holiday hotels and beach locations!

We had a great time at Bentota Beach it was much nicer than the pictures showed. It sits on a lovely beach which is great to walk along during the day. The train station is just outside and we caught a train to Galle which was a great experiance and felt really safe with all the locals very friendly towards us. We then got a tuk tuk and he took us around for the day for about £20 and then caught the airconditioned bus back.
We stayed B&B but ate in the hotel some nights as the buffet had great food for about £10 each and the a la carte restraurant wasn't expensive either. We celebrated our silver wedding anniversary and all the staff where lovely we had a fabulous fish platter / lobster meal served outside and they made us a chocolate cake. We where there for New Years eve and the gala dinner and evening was great
The rooms are very nice, clean and roomy. The staff are really friendly. The gardens are lovely and have an elephant that you can ride or feed. The hotel was full for new year but there was plenty of sun beds and towels are provided. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel and it far exceeds the 4 stars that it is given.

This is a very nice hotel if a little tired around the edges. The rooms are large and comfortable but the public areas let it down. The corridors are scruffy and need repainting. The dining room is large and noisy but the food is excellent. Best of all is the garden which is pleasant and peaceful. The hotel is close to the beach but far enough away that you aren't bothered by the beach sellers.

This is a stunning property, with both beach- and riverfront shores, a pool, lots of sunning space, and plenty of actvities. The rooms were nicely decorated and comfortable, and all have porches or decks. The service was friendly though not always fast or efficient. The spa is under renovation, but we went to a nice Ayurvedic center that was just a short boatride away. My only negative comments would be about the dining opportunities. I'm no fan of large dinner or lunch buffets, so I didn't eat at this one, but it seemed uninviting: brightly lit, overly air-conditioned, with windows that can't be opened even during good weather. The only alternative for dinner is the "fine dining restaurant," which served decent food, but was virtually empty (everyone was at the buffet), and was also too cold and bright. During the day you can get lunch by the pool, but we found the food bland and the service extremely slow. It's hard to understand why a resort with such beautiful outdoor space doesn't take more advantage of it: there should be places to eat or have drinks outdoors, perhaps along the water. And speaking of water, how can have a beach resort situated on a truly stunning beach, and not allow guest to take towels there???

First of all I would say never travel in May it is their rain season and we got maybe 2 nice sunshine days in 10. Unfortunately we decided to use a specialist travel agent to get the best trip and were told by the lady at key2holidays who visits regularly that it is a tropical country will rain for 1 hour and stop. All the locals said you should avoid May. Anyway I hope the commission was worth it, needless to say we won't be using them again. The property doesn't cater for young children too well as their are stairs everywhere. They were also refurbing at this time because of not many people booking during May. Something else the agent failed on. We tried hard to specify we wanted an accessible room and cot ready, but this was not the case. The original room had 2 flights of stairs to get to and all they could do was move us a floor up when we complained. Hence the travel agent failed us big time and the hotel also. The customer service was miserable and they really didn't care, I was told other familes with babies stay in these rooms and don't have an issue with stairs so whats the problem. I was really disappointed. Anyway we made the best of what we could. To sum it up the property itself is very nice and spacious, food was nice and of good variety. Much better property than the Taj Exotica which we visited to look at while there. It could of been a really nice holiday and I am sure it would be if you go at the right time and not have to deal with the staff to resolve any issues. Hope it helps as I didn't want to go on about all the issues we faced getting a more buggy accessible room and staff attitude. I am sure you get the idea.

I liked nearly everything about my stay at this hotel. The hotel is nicely laid out as was our deluxe room with a great view over the lagoon/river, and was well kept by housekeeping (flower petals on the bed at night, complimentary water, etc). The pool area and surrounding gardens are lovely and lead onto one of the best beaches I know anywhere - the perfect area to relax in tropical surroundings. and there is even a residential elephant! Be aware the sea can get very rough at certain times of the year so pick your season carefully. The staff are well-mannered, relaxed, helpful and friendly. Apparently the all inclusive deal is good value but we only ever do B&B as we like to eat out at local restaurants (some good ones around but they take some finding). My only gripe would be the sub-standard food served in the a la carte restaurant, which is not so expensive, but the meat was poor quality, overcooked, with no finesse in the cooking at all - seafood is often a better option in Sri Lanka. That said, the compulsory Christmas and New Year's Eve buffets were very good on everything, so go figure? All in all, I will be back at the Bentota Beach one day soon, without fear.
