“This hotel is better when you see it for your self”
Reviewed 14 February 2011

Having read some of the reviews on here I was not expecting perfection. I thought that the pictures didn't look that great but for the price, we booked it.

The journey from the airport after an 11 hour flight was deadly. Even though our driver was sent by the hotel his driving was physically scary. Thankfully the reception we were meet with upon our arrival was excellent.

Our room was on the top floor and I was shocked when I opened the door to a morden looking room. The aircon was on the whole time which was good, the bed clean ,firm and large. The pillows were nearly new, fluffy and helped with the jetlag. The room was cleaned every day if we wanted. We had a beautiful view of the pool and the sea.

The pool was clean, with the pool side looked after by friendly and helpful staff. Only negative was that you could not eat lunch at your sunbed- not really such a hardship!! the beach is at the end of 50m path.

On to the food- There is a lot of choice at dinner time however most things do have a rather spicy/hot flavour. Every night had a different theme which was a nice touch. negative things would be that you are sat at one table for the whole week so you could not chose where you sat and the cheapest bottle of wine was £28. This is not to say this is an expensive hotel, local beer was about £2.50 so we stuck to that.

Not much to see locally but I would advise to hire a tuktuk and ask him to take us around the village. We got to see a coconut factory, temple and our drivers home.

Only other thing to be aware of are the 'Tourism Rep's' on the beach. We got conned in to a raft ride and was asked for £30 at the end of it. We had to politely barter with them to get the price down!!

stayed for a week after doing the wildlife tour which was amazing. the hotel is clean the rooms are large and beds very comfy the pool and hotel grounds are beautiful. We only stayed BB but that was very good. The eateries outside the hotel were very limited and the outside resort is very quiet which suited us. it takes ages to get anywhere in Sri lanka due to the poor road and maniac drivers. the people cannot do enough for you and are very proud of the island. if you decided to do any when in bentota book them outside with the locals much cheaper.

We really enjoyed our stay the Bentota Beach Hotel. We found the staff pleasant and professional, the room was clean and comfortable, the food was fresh and varied. This was the first part of our honeymoon and we were absolutely exhausted by the time we arrived in Sri Lanka. Based on other comments I had read on this website, I had inquired with our travel agent about the transfer time between the airport and the hotel. I had been told it was about 1.5 hours - when because of the time we arrived it was closer to 4.5 hours. I have done my share of packpacking and budget travel and this trip was to be neither of those things for us, but the transfer to/from the hotel and airport was pretty awful. The tiny minibus was extremely basic combined with the length of time it took made me really regret choosing this location for the first part of our stay.
But bac to the hotel review - I thought the hotel was really lovely- the spa hadn't opened yet but we were able to use the spa faclilities of the neighbouring hotel. I really didn't want to get back in a bus before we had to so we just mainly explored on foot - both Bentota village itself (which was a really hidden treasure just off the main road) and the nearby village over the bridge. Peter assigned himself as our guide into the Bentota village which proved to be very useful although naturally enough he was keen for us to take a boat trip, visit the bazaar etc.... On the recommedation of one of the pool boys at the hotel we also visited the temple at the end of Bentota Beach. Another hidden treasure and I only regret we didn't go there earlier in the week in order to join the medidation sessions which are held daily. Overall I absolutely enjoyed my time in Bentota hotel, the staff, the food, amentities etc...were all very good. The transfer from the airport would be the thing stopping me going back there...

The hotel is well located, just off the Colombo - Galle road and adjacent to the railway line in Bentota, and in an extensive garden/park which borders directly on to the Bentota river on one side and access to the long and wide beach on the other side.
The rooms/balconies, with view on to either the river or gardens/beach, are spacious, very clean, but not exactly comfortable. The service is generally very good, personnel very helpful and friendly, buffet restaurant and food is ok ('tourist standard), and lounge with live music / entertainment nice and relaxing - but sometimes with the A/C in overdrive (thought to be for driving guests to bed at night!).
With plenty of sun beds, pool, bar and snack bar, the garden/park is ideal for relaxing, and a fence, with security guards, between the garden/park and beach is cetainly a plus if only wanting peace and quiet - and not being continually pestered by beach boys / vendors. Long walks along the super beach are a must - but not if scared of being continually pestered (where are you from, what's your name, where you staying, what's your room / tel. number, want a ....., etc.).
Opinion: One of the best holiday hotels and beach locations!

We had a great time at Bentota Beach it was much nicer than the pictures showed. It sits on a lovely beach which is great to walk along during the day. The train station is just outside and we caught a train to Galle which was a great experiance and felt really safe with all the locals very friendly towards us. We then got a tuk tuk and he took us around for the day for about £20 and then caught the airconditioned bus back.
We stayed B&B but ate in the hotel some nights as the buffet had great food for about £10 each and the a la carte restraurant wasn't expensive either. We celebrated our silver wedding anniversary and all the staff where lovely we had a fabulous fish platter / lobster meal served outside and they made us a chocolate cake. We where there for New Years eve and the gala dinner and evening was great
The rooms are very nice, clean and roomy. The staff are really friendly. The gardens are lovely and have an elephant that you can ride or feed. The hotel was full for new year but there was plenty of sun beds and towels are provided. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel and it far exceeds the 4 stars that it is given.

This is a very nice hotel if a little tired around the edges. The rooms are large and comfortable but the public areas let it down. The corridors are scruffy and need repainting. The dining room is large and noisy but the food is excellent. Best of all is the garden which is pleasant and peaceful. The hotel is close to the beach but far enough away that you aren't bothered by the beach sellers.

This is a stunning property, with both beach- and riverfront shores, a pool, lots of sunning space, and plenty of actvities. The rooms were nicely decorated and comfortable, and all have porches or decks. The service was friendly though not always fast or efficient. The spa is under renovation, but we went to a nice Ayurvedic center that was just a short boatride away. My only negative comments would be about the dining opportunities. I'm no fan of large dinner or lunch buffets, so I didn't eat at this one, but it seemed uninviting: brightly lit, overly air-conditioned, with windows that can't be opened even during good weather. The only alternative for dinner is the "fine dining restaurant," which served decent food, but was virtually empty (everyone was at the buffet), and was also too cold and bright. During the day you can get lunch by the pool, but we found the food bland and the service extremely slow. It's hard to understand why a resort with such beautiful outdoor space doesn't take more advantage of it: there should be places to eat or have drinks outdoors, perhaps along the water. And speaking of water, how can have a beach resort situated on a truly stunning beach, and not allow guest to take towels there???
