Overall it's a good spot for a couple of days of beach and pool time. Not much in the local surrounding so would personally get a bit bored after a few days.

We had a luxury room which was 100 euros and while very nice, clean and comfortable I think it's probably a bit overpriced. Food was pretty good especially sea food but service quite slow taking about 2 hours for evening meal.

Expensive taxis from hotel but if you walk to the main road a local driver will do the job for half the price. Overall a good stay.

The Hotel Wunderbar was not what we had hoped for, on arrival no one greeted us and we just stood around waiting for reception staff. It did not look quite like photos as the there was No sea view, although this was promised on booking confirmation as we requested. The palm trees are beautiful but have grown a lot taller!
When we got to room it was brilliant, large, clean and well designed with huge balcony. However then sadly the owners TV below us went on and was very noisey so we asked to change rooms, next day we moved up to top floor, slightly quieter but the owner joined the guset nextdor and started shouting orders to staff and throwing things off the balcony to his children(his family lived below the guest rooms). It was not the quiet and restful experience we had hoped for at the end of our travels.
The staff were polite and the place was clean. The railway track had to be crossed by foot to the beach was not a problem and quite novel. We searched other places to eat and drink but other hotels were gated. There were nice places to eat cheaper, nextdoor hotel, curry bowl down the road and a few near the lake (SERENA VILLA - nice).
Would not recommend this hotel for peace and quiet, but the owner kindly did move us and arranged pick up on departure. Shame about the expectation of a sea view and the noisey boss, otherwise could have been much better.

Room Tip: Ask for top floor of new building.

We visited hotel Wunderbar two times on our trip to Sri Lanka. The hotel and the service was so nice that we had to come back again. First time we stayed for 4 nights and second time for 5 nights and the staff really makes you fell like home. Service at the hotel and especially the restaurant is wonderful and makes you never want to leave... The food is excellent and they have a big selection of FRESS seafood.
The pool is nice, clean and BIG. The ocean is only 2 min walk and they with out a doubt have the best beach in Sri Lanka. You only arrive at the beach and a sun bed is ready for you. This is defiantly the hotel you want to stay if you have kids. They have many turtles you can release baby turtles to the sea at night. This was a big experience for us all. Rooms are big and clean. Massage is very good at the hotel.
All in all, we can defiantly recommend this hotel!
All the best to all staff at hotel Wunderbar.

I chose Wunderbar because I was looking for a place I could really relax at the end of a busy two weeks in Colombo. Wunderbar was a great place to unwind and chill out.

My standard room was big and had a lovely balcony area. It contained a comfortable king bed and mini-bar. Although the room was very close to the pool, thankfully there was only a little noise on one of the mornings. The bathroom was clean with good hot water, even if the pressure wasn't great.

Being right on the beach is just what I wanted - Wunderbar is a short stroll over the railway lines to the sand. Yes, there are regular trains passing through which may bother some people, however I thought it added to the romance of the place. The private beach is clean with sun beds, towels and umbrellas provided. The beach itself isn't the most beautiful, compared with some of the beaches further south, but the hotel is close enough by tuk-tuk to the other beaches if you prefer to swim in clear blue water.

The staff are brilliant - they are friendly, easy going and accommodating.

The restaurant food was delicious. The jumbo prawns were so good I ordered them two nights in a row and I was even treated to a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast one morning because I had mentioned to the staff how much I enjoyed Sri Lankan food. The tea, of course, is superb.

Pros:
Away from any hustle and bustle
Uncrowded beach
Turtle conservation and hatchery - very special to be involved in releasing baby turtles into the ocean
Clean rooms with air-con and hot water
Friendly staff (even if you have to go looking for them)
Ayruvedic massage available (will need to ask, no information available in room)

Cons:
It was difficult for me to find decent accommodation in anywhere in Sri Lanka that wasn't overpriced. There seems to be no mid-range pricing (I wonder if this is because electricity is so expensive?). I would class Wunderbar as a good three-star hotel however it's on the pricey side for a three star.

In countries where it is not safe to drink the tap water, most hotels offer complimentary drinking water. Wunderbar charges for drinking water which, although isn't expensive, given the overall cost of staying there I thought was unnecessary.

There is no in-room safe and you are requested to leave your valuables in the front office safe. There is also no information in the rooms about anything - you have to ask. I found the office unattended most of the time. It wasn't a huge issue for me, but again, not what you'd expect for the price.

Going by his attitude and thick gold chains, I think the owner/manager does very well out this business. In no small way is this due to his loyal staff. I hope they receive a fair wage for their hard work.

Room Tip: Room No. 4 is an upstairs corner room with a nice balcony. Part of the restaurant can see into the...

We stayed at the Wunderbar for 4 nights in Mar 13. The reviews seemed good so we were disappointed once we arrived. The rooms are very nice but over priced for the area. We booked the rooms via another Web site when we noticed that only 2 rooms remained. We were therefore very surprised to find that 18 rooms were empty at the hotel on arrival-someone is altering the facts to make you book in haste. The staff are very good and pleasant in the bar/restaurant which is overpriced for food and drinks, an equivalent hotel next door was markedly cheaper and had a better ambience in the restaurant in the evening. Trains run very close to the hotel and are noisy, they run throughout the night - do not be conned by reviews that say that they stop at night - they do not. Towels in the rooms are old and threadbare with stains from previous users, we ended up using our own beach towels to be safe. The beach is very pleasant and if you wander down during the evening you may see turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs. Yes there are some good points, but not enough to justify the cost to what is an empty hotel.
