“Paradise on Sri Lanka”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2014

We stayed 8 days at Dalmanuta in April and I have to say that I loved every minute of it! The bungalows are all very luxurious and perfectly clean. The pool area is awesome with 1 pool large enough to do laps in and 1 smaller, more chilled pool with jacuzzi function to sit and relax in. The pool area staff made sure you had clean towels at all time, a cool drink in your hand and fresh fruits when ever needed.

The restaurant serves great food. the staff is very friendly and attentive and the atmosphere by the river is super relaxed and romantic.

A fun twist was that the room service boys made up new advanced towel decorations each day so we were always excited when we got back to the rooms after hitting the pool or beach to see what they had come up with this time!

The gardens with all animals (lizzards, monkeys etc) is really beautiful and the location of the resort is great if you want to escape the crowded town. If you want some more action you can always just take a short boat or tuk tuk trip to the beach, have some dinner and drinks before returning to your own paradise at Dalmanuta.

Thanks for a great stay/Cecilia

I came for yoga and ayurvedic treatment. But I must say that the first and best treatment ever was the staff - everyone was so kind, helpful - always with a beautiful smile. The resort rested in a peaceful and healing environment, calming for stressed souls. Only birds and crickets, fish jumping in the ponds - one or two monkeys jumping in the trees, making sounds. The food was excellent. Also The yogalessons and treatments with good benefit and high class. Thanks to everyone - noone named, noone forgotten. - Already hoping to return soon. Dalmanuta in My heart:)

Like the Garden of Eden, so many flowers, so many birds, exotic fruits and just a few mosquitos)) and even though the hotel was fully booked, we felt like we were alone. The food was great and the view from the restaurant was even better! I liked the ayurvedic doctor very much, the whole treatment team gave me so much warmth and attention.
The staff was great and made our stay very relaxed and comfortable.
Be sure to take a boat ride to the beach and visit the mangroves on the way!

What makes Dalmanuta so enchanted is the warm and friendly service, the perfect location for relaxing with its selected number of bungalows and the love of the owner for the place. From the moment I arrived and was collected from the airport I was made extremely welcome. The manager Chamal and his family, the front office manager Imail, the chief butler Naleer, and the rest of the staff are always ready to help you as if you were extended family of Dalmanuta.

I had no previous experience with Ayurevedic treatment. Dr. Prabuddhi is so kind, gentle and sincere that the care started even before my arrival via e-mail. My sense of wellbeing improved so much in five short days. There is no question that a longer stay is necessary for full benefits. I want to say thank you to my therapist, Pushpa. It would be great if she or the doctor could offer perhaps a class, in collaboration with the gardeners, about the herbs that they use daily in the treatments or how to prepare the herbal balls and oils for the guests who wish to know more about Ayurveda. Their knowledge of plants is a real fortune, it would be wonderful if they could share it. Indeed the well attended botanical garden of Dalmanuta would certainly help.

Twice a day I took yoga classes which were delightful and the “yoga sala” where we practiced is highly recommended. If I could make a suggestion, it would be nice if the morning classes could start an hour earlier, so there is enough time between breakfast and the treatment.

The rooms were clean, simple, and comfortable. Thanks to the stable Wi-Fi, I was able to use my computer to check email everywhere in the hotel ground.

It comes highly recommended.

Dalmanuta Gardens is a lovely, small resort located by the Bentota river. The staff is very warm and welcoming, from the wonderful team of Sumith and Saresh at the restaurant to the staff at the Ayuverdic spa, housekeeping and the great care of managers Ismail and Chamal. The food was delicious, fresh and healthy served in their restaurant with the most fantastic view over the Bentota river. With 9 bungalows set in lovely gardens including their own spice garden, it had the most relaxing atmosphere. The resort was helpful in arranging day trips to several worthwhile places to see around Sri Lanka. We thoroughly enjoyed it and hope to be able to visit again in the near future.

Dalmanuta Gardens offered much more than I ever could expect. From the first minute when I arrived, the staff was very friedly and helpful. The room clean and fresh, very good standard!
Food , always fresh and very tasty. To sit at one of the piers and enjoy fresh fish or fantastic lagoon prawns was an experience I will never forget!
You could walk in the beautiful park or sit on a sofa under the palm trees and enjoy the sounds from all the birds and watch the fishes in the ponds. It was also very nice to take morning walks in neighbor area.
The treatments, and the massage, also high class. I joined the yoga class twice a day.
I left Dalmanuta with a feeling of a younger body and a peaceful soul and happiness in my hart.
I highly recommend Dalmanuta Gardens.

It is Swedish owned and it would look like most who travel here come from Sweden.
Situated up the river from Bentota .
We stayed here for 5 days first impressions were that the rooms really needed updating.
Very dark rooms quite small and out-dated furnishing for example one of the wicker chairs had a hole in it, toilet seats that move when you sit on them and they do not fit the basin.
The first night we had to ask for a change of pillows because there were brown stains all over them not good!. The house keeping was hit and miss , we only had one brown towel which you use after your treatments, this was never replaced. You are given dressing gowns so that you can walk to the treatment rooms, but after a couple of uses they really needed a change unfortunately this did not happen, they took the old ones away and never replaced them!
Room service if you asked for this , you were then charged 500rp on top of your bill.
Tea and coffee in room, had to ask for tea(Sri Lanka with no tea! )as there were no tea bags when we arrived and these were not topped up daily as you would expect until our last day when we were given a section of tea types.
Rooms generally quite disappointing although the idea of bungalow with its own private garden is good .
Outside the room it took you back to nature and was just great to walk around the grounds or relax by the pool.
Fruit and water was brought to the pool side mid morning , nice touch.
Please note that there is only one umbrella by the pool, we were siting by the pool under the one and only and another couple asked if they could get one, the answer was no!....they did not have any more.
The treatment rooms are huts with a roof no air-con, the treatments are okay but I am used to the Thai massages which I personally prefer after trying this type of massage. It just seems like they pour oil over your body and try to rub it in with little success and then it takes forever to get it off your body!
The restaurant breakfast and dinner were fine and you had a good selection to choose from.
The evening meals were very good and the service from the staff in this area was good, thanks to Suresh and the team for looking after us.Like others we had the river prawns which were fantastic.
Overall I can say that the staff were all very good.
The big disappointment were the facilities and standard of equipment in the rooms(see my photos),in my opinion I do not know how it rates so high on trip-advisor.
All of us have standards and perhaps my expectations were too high for this basic type of accommodation.
The better choice for us would of been Bentota beach hotel or stayed at Lavanga which is excellent.

Peer F, General Manager at Dalmanuta Gardens - Ayurvedic Resort & Restaurant, responded to this review, 28 March 2014
Dear Sir.
Thank you for taking your valuable time to inform us about your experience.
We are truly sad over the errors you’ve pointed out but we are also happy that you liked our restaurant, our food, our staff and the courtesy of free water and fruit by the poolside.
We are also happy that you liked the idea of having your own private garden outside your own private bungalow. Most guests also like the unique nature surrounding all the bungalows in our different gardens.
In all rooms you will find different tea sorts including the very special Ayurvedic; Vata, Pita and Kapha tea in the basket next to the water boiler on top of the minibar in each room. As showed in the welcoming show around, the staff showed you that it is not only possible but also good tasting purified drinking water in tap. This unique facility makes the tea extra well tasting.
It is really not acceptable to have not properly cleaned pillow cases upon arrival. If you have let the management had the information about this, we at once, would have corrected this and all other errors. It seems like our room keeping have missed in leaving correct reports regarding the damage in the chair and the loos fit commode cover. We have a routine that a report should be given to Front Office / Maintenance for each room, each day. Those errors were not reported. We have had a serious talk with all the involved staff and really hope that we don’t see anything more of this sort of errors. We only wish you, and all future guests report any errors to the management on the spot. If you would have done so, we would have made whatever we could, to correct and compensate you. Maybe given you another room with a newer bathroom at no extra charge.
The rooms have semi antique furniture of very high class made by an excellent Sri Lankan carpenter. The colour is dark. It is of course a matter of taste but many guests are really impressed over this example of very good workmanship. We believe this is more beautiful instead of having an “update” to more modern furniture. Our very spacious rooms are divided into a light living area next to two windows and the sleeping area a half step up. Outside each bungalow we have a (15 sqm.) large veranda, with two very comfortable beautiful and comfortable “Hansiputtos” (a semi antique relaxing chair.) You have also a dining table with two beautiful comfortable handmade semi antique chairs. And as you pointed out, dining here is possible at a small charge (3,5 USD). Our rooms are well lit up but with good curtains. Most of our guests like to come away from the light to rest dark and cool inside, especially after the Ayurvedic treatments. We do have sufficient amount of lamps in the room (5) which also allows reading with no problem, also for elderly people.
Unfortunately it seems that like you did not had the benefit of our offering of a free consultation with our highly skilled Ayurvedic Doctor. We are very sorry and sad that our standard routine, obviously, was not followed. Our routines are that every guest should get the possibility to learn, at least something, about Ayurveda “the science of life”. If you would have been offered and taken advantage over this opportunity, your knowledge, benefit and understanding of Ayurveda Treatments would have been different. It is really a very big difference in comparison with i.e. Thai massage.
Most of our guests prefer to have a sun bath near the pool. There should always be two white umbrellas by the big pool. Sometimes we need to clean the fabrics and at that time we use a spare fabric. This time there was only one umbrella because both the fabrics where on laundry at the same time. Now we have also ordered on extra portable umbrella to satisfy an eventually request for an extra third umbrella and also ordered one extra fabric to avoid having them all at the laundry at the same time. I wish the pool attendant could have informed you and tried to solve the problem but he is only having his introduction English classes so his understanding is very limited. At the pool side we also have the small Jacuzzi pool always situated the afternoon shadow, which is highly appreciated from those who like to avoid the sun. If you would have asked the management or the reception we would have found some way of give you some shade.
We are very happy that you appreciated the courtesy of free water and fruit by the pool side and also that you really enjoyed our delicious sea food and the attentive restaurant service. Thank you especially for pointing out that the staff was all very good.
Once again, Thank you for bring your comments to our attention.

Peer Franzén.
