“The most idyllic of locations.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2014

We spent 4 nights at the Waterside Hotel and were just charmed by the hotel, it's staff and the owner. The Waterside has 6 large a/c bed rooms, all with balcony. It is positioned on the edge of the Lagoon, a short boat ride from the main beach which the hotel were happy to provide free of charge for guests. The hotel is full of character with an almost Romanesque open air pillared dining area which is a fabulous place to eat. The staff were the highlight of the holiday, so warm and genuine especially Indica who has recently joinded the hotel staff. Such a warm and gentle guy who served you with a constant smile and made you feel right at home. As we were at the end of of our tour, we wanted just to chill by the pool and pick up a few rays and it was perfect for this, no noise just views across the lagoon and taking in the wild life.. The pool is quite large and with only 6 rooms, it was never going to get busy. The hotel is a 20 minute walk from the beach or a 10 minute boat ride across the lagoon. The hotel's English owner Susan was charm personified and made us feel very welcome.
All in all, a fantastic boutique hotel and another highlight in our special break in Sri Lanka. Again, I have no hesitation in recommending it to all and it get top marks in every department.

As soon as you walk round to reception, you know that you have made a great choice. Fantasic location on the edge of the river set amonst the Mangroves. It felt like the most relaxing place on earth & a perfect place to spend our last 4 nights in Sri Lanka. Beautiful gardens & pool area, great open resturant, big airy bedroom with double doors on to the balcony, ( 6 rooms, 3 up, 3 down all face the pool & river so have great views) & a large bathroom. No shower door which made it a little messy but bath mats provided so not really a problem.
Free boat ride to the beach & town or just go on the river trip to spot the plentiful wild life.
We also had a free cooking lesson given to us by their wonderful chef - rice & curry, which we really enoyed.
Sue the owner, is a great lady with a fasinating story as to how it all came about & the staff are all warm, friendly & efficient.
The location, the atmospher, the facilities, the food & all the wonderful staff make this a perfect place to stay. We would go back in a second, simply loved it there, very peaceful.

Room Tip: All rooms have a great view & have either a balcony or a patio. Pool is in front of the rooms bu...

Highly impressed with lovely environment such as garden, river view and luxury rooms. Another thing that captured my mind and eyes was relaxing environment rich with green nature. I really enjoyed variety of excellent fresh meals served by the hotel.

Lastly, this hotel provides you boat rides and many other facilities. This is the place that has very affordable price plans and everything that you are looking for when you are in a new land.

I highly recommend this place for anyone to go and have this fantastic experience that we had.

Room Tip: The room is fantastic.

We are seasoned travelers and have stayed in many different style hotels around the world. The Waterside Bentota Hotel is a real jewel. We only stayed for three nights. We wish we could stay a lot longer. We had never seen such an excellent service before. All of the staff members are very helpful and attend to details and treat you like you are a king or a queen. The rooms are very specious and extremely clean. All the meals and breakfast are made to order. The food is very fresh and tasty. There is a boat belonging to the hotel which will take you to sandy beaches close by. You may also have the pleasure of meeting with the owner/operator of the hotel- Susan who is a very intelligent, kind, and charming person. We learned a lot from her. She may even explain the history of why the hotel was built in the first place. It was a fascinating story. When you turn from the main road into little road leading to the hotel, do not worry about the surroundings as you will reach the brilliant little hotel. We are surprised of 2 1/2 star rating of this hotel. We strongly believe that it deserves a higher rating. Strongly recommended to everyone. Happy stay!

Room Tip: I know it is a personal preference but we liked upstairs where we had a fantastic view of the river...

Spent 2 nights here and really enjoyed it. Room had lovely view over pool, bathroom could do with an upgrade. Staff were very friendly and meals were really wonderful (freshly cooked whatever you wanted (more or less)). Staff take you to Bentota by boat, and we had an interesting boat trip around the surrounding area, great mango swamps. Can get to Bentota easily. Would love to go back.

The Waterside is a very quiet small hotel overlooking the river with superb sunsets and an ideal place to recover from the often frenetic pace of live in Sri Lanka. It was really nice to have breakfasts cooked specially for you - and the evening meals were of a very high standard.

Although away from the centre of town, a pleasant and complimentary boat ride would take you to the beach or the town centre within 5 minutes- and at any time you wished.

The staff were most helpful and friendly and the English lady owner -who built the hotel 7 years ago after the Tsunami to help local employment- was always on hand to help with any advice

The rooms were spacious and comfortable.

Overall a very pleasant and enjoyable place to stay

Room Tip: There are 6 rooms of equal dimensions, three on the ground floor leading onto a terrace and the swim...

This was the most expensive place we stayed in Sri Lanka, and on top of that they charged for bottled water. The setting was nice -- rooms overlooked a swimming pool and beyond it the river. But the moldy odor in the room didn't make it a pleasant place to hang out. Breakfast was a random affair, with servers wandering around and never asking us what we wanted to eat, but bringing cold toast and eventually this and that. The attitude of the staff was only fair compared to every other place we stayed in Sri Lanka.
