In the photos this hotel looked like a fabulous way to spend the last three days of our two week Sri Lankan adventure and a base to celebrate our engagement.
Sadly and frustratingly, we were let down.
We were asked upon arrival to pay upfront, which seemed odd at the time but we obliged. Unaware of the upfront payment I used my debit card. I was told there would be a 3.5% service charge which I questioned at the time but they said it’s becuase I was using a card. Reluctantly I paid as we were eager to use the facilities.
At the end of the stay, settling up a bar bill and some food from the duration of the stay, I used my card again. The lady behind the desk added up my signed bits of paper, expecting her to add the 3.5% charge for the card, she didn’t. When I questioned the lack of the charge the lady couldn’t look at me and said that I hadn’t been charged the 3.5% upon arrival. I of course had been charged so be very careful.
One evening one we went to the reception to ask their advice on a seafood restaurant we had found on Trip Advisor literally 100m down the road. The reply was ridiculous. Like petty school children a guy, who I believe was the manager, looked past me to a group of staff behind me and in a coy manner replied saying the photos look good but the food is rubbish etc. I can assure you the food and service at Bentota Rock was superb and we ate there every night.
The service at the hotel on the whole was terrible. Waiters unable to listen to basic orders, making us wait for food to be cooked with food not coming out at the same time with in the group we were in. Very disruptive.
My fiancée and our friend both felt very uncomfortable when sunbathing on the beach and pool with staff constantly staring. This of course seriously wound me up too. We actually had to spend several hours in our room when walking to the beach, several locals who were enjoying a public holiday all left the pool area and followed the girls to the beach. With 4 guys sat on a sun bed just metres away all with cameras taking photos we left ASAP. The beach attendant saw what happened and did nothing. A day lost for us in the glorious tropical sunshine. As a result, we contacted an old school friend of my fiancee in Colombo to see if we could stay ther in for the last day.
It is such a shame our experience was like this. The hotel setting is lovely. Rooms are ok but we had holes in our netting over the beds. No doubt the result of many bites we have.
I do hope the hotel takes on board my comments.
