“Good location and lovely restaurant, recommended.”
Reviewed 24 March 2013

This little hotel is conveniently located in the centre of Bentota and by crossing the railway you're immediately on the beautiful bentota beach. They have rooms for different budgets, the standard room (cheapest) are very hot, only have a fan, and not for light sleepers, you're very close to the railway and you hear every train passing, wear earplugs ! But they are spacious and spotlessy clean ! I stayed 5 nights in this room, for me this was ok. However, if you want AC or can't bear the noise of the train, there are other rooms available which are more expensive. All room types have balcony or terrace, really nice. In the garden there are sunbeds. There's a very good restaurant in a lovely garden which is also very popular with guests from other hotels; Good ayurveda massage centre, very professional and recommended. In general Bentota is an expensive resort area so i find Susanthas a very good place to stay in this area. On top the staff is the best, really nice and helpfull. If you're doing trips go through the hotel or your representative not with the many beach boys that frequent the beach !

Room Tip: Rooms in the main building are more quiet and have A/C

We had a deluxe room which was fantastic; lovely big bed and a massive shower. The best bit was the balcony complete with loungers and an amazing view over the stunning (and surprisingly empty) Bentota beach. The staff were lovely and very accomadating; they organised a driver to collect us from the airport at 5am and didn't charge us extra for early check in. The food in the restaurant was nice and reasonably priced. Only complaint would be the room was right next to the railway line and the trains would rarely go past without a blast on the horn to signal their arrival. However this does mean the hotel is extremely easy to find when arriving by train!

Room Tip: The deluxe rooms were worth the extra $10 or so they charge at the hotel.

We arrived late a night and found the staff very accommodating. The room had a separate sitting area as well as the bedroom. We had a refrigerator (with beer and soft drinks) and fan. If there was AC we never found it. They did not have Wifi but had a commuter for checking email. The food was OK but we only had breakfast there.

Room Tip: Get there early and get a room away from the railroad tracks.

My room was really nice and cosy and bathroom was good.
Except for: the train station - there are trains you can barely ignore all night long, the food not great at all and the water which is hot except when it rains. In a tropical country I think it's quite stupid. Otherwise staff is nice and beach is two steps away.

We booked a deluxe room and enjoyed a wonderful view of the ocean except when the trains stop (see pictures of the view with and without train). A minor point you may think until the first train pulls in at 04:30 and I defy anybody to sleep through that or in fact any of the trains that pass at regular intervals thereafter. If you stay in one of the basic rooms at the back then maybe you will not be disturbed but at all cost avoid the deluxe rooms or the suite.

The fridge in the room has to be seen to be believed so take a look at the photo and draw your own conclusions. The towels must have been in use for over a decade. Our deluxe room did not have a TV (and there are none in the hotel) or a safe. There is no wifi and the hotel will charge you 3 times the cost of the local internet cafe to sit in a hot dark room at a very old and slow computer. Forget eating at the hotel and just walk to the place opposite for a very nice lunch or dinner. The photo on the website is the suite room.

One of the worst places we have ever stayed

but disinterested and rather uninformed staff and a pretty noisy location right next to the railway station. Luckily the trains don't hoot at night! The restaurant served an OK breakfast and they were quite sweet about getting our fried eggs just right. But the lunch and dinner we tried were both close to inedible.
It's difficult to bathe from the beach as the waves are enormous and the current very strong and full of sand. Also, there's no chairs or parasols to be had, so one must just go down there and back. We went to the Bentota Beach Hotel and bought tickets to their (excellent) buffet, which included access to their lovely swimming pool. Susanthas has no pool. With a pool, even if small, this hotel would upgrade itself massively.

Room Tip: Some of the non-aircon rooms are literally facing the railway. I wouldn't want to stay in one of...

Arrived late into Bentota and booked into horrible guesthouse, the next morning walked the beach and asked several locals and tourists their recommendations for reasonable priced, relaxing and clean place - Susantha was the name that came up the most, thankfully it lived up to it's rap. Staff friendly and helpful, rooms clean, with old world feel, food excellent - didn't go the pizza. The only negative were the sandfly's, so take plenty of repellent.
