“10 out of 10 - like staying with friends - paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 November 2010

Shrangri-Lanka Guest House was recommended to me by friends and we were not disappointed.

The guest house was like a little spot of paradise. The rooms beautifully decorated, big, spacious and pristine, with so much attention to detail (fridge, laptop and little items that make you feel at home). The bathroom was large, with great shower and big fluffy towels. We stayed on the 3rd floor, which had its own balcony, which is more like a terrace and has the most amazing views of the garden below and the vast green that stretches out.

We were looked after extremely well and it felt like you were staying with friends rather than a hotel. The owners Rohan and Karen are lovely and ensure you relaxed and not in need of anything. The other members of the team are also great, especially Chaminda who will take you anywhere in his tuk tuk. Also we must not forget Bobby the dog, who welcomes all guests like long lost friends!

They also provide tours, tailor-made to fit around your needs. We went to Yala National Park and the Jeep driver Rohan arranged was excellent, spotting all the animals as he drove along. We saw wild elephants and even a leopard!

Our stay here was an absolute delight and the only fault we found was that we did not stay long enough.

Thank you very much Rohan and Karen!

We stayed at the Shangri Lanka Villa for 8 nights in the middle of November during the Eid Al Adha holiday period with our 2 year old daughter. It can only be described as a secluded paradise.
We arrived mid afternnon on a Friday at Colombo where we were met and then driven to the villa - approx 100km away, taking 3 ½ hours through rush hour traffic!!! . On route we received a call from Rohan, asking us what we wanted for dinner on our arrival, which was a nice touch and heightened the sense of anticipation.
On our arrival at Shangri Lanka Villa, we were warmly welcomed by Rohan and the lads and shown to our room, which was excellent – spacious, clean, large bathroom with a rain shower and bath. We were then treated to the fantastic Sri Lankan curry, Dahl, salad and huge prawns! This effectively set the standard from day one and was not surpassed by our excursions to other local restaurants during the week. In the morning when we got up we could then see the pool area and the impressive view from our balcony.
The pool is excellent and a real suntrap and there were massage therapies available on request, which we took advantage of. The Villa is spotlessly clean, with clean towels every day and there was also a laptop in the room, which was ideal for our daughter when it rained and for us to check-in online.
As the villa is also situated on the edge of the jungle, you will see lots of local wildlife, including giant fruit bats, monkeys, water monitors etc. Karen and Rohan have three dogs on site who were very friendly and perfectly harmless, very child friendly in fact and our daughter would have loved to bring Maisie home with us!!!
The atmosphere at Shangri Lanka Villa is calm and peaceful, set in a beautiful location with exceptional service. The lads all work so hard and are very attentive but without being intrusive – providing drinks and food when you want them and tuk tuk trips when required for shopping, out to restaurants etc. We were also lucky enough to have met a lovely Welsh couple staying at the villa at the same time as us, which made our stay even more perfect
Whilst at the villa we stayed in 5 nights for dinner because the food was excellent, though we did venture out and try a few local restaurants; the Golden Grill, which was excellent and Maali's restaurant - run by Rohan's nephew - which is a seafood restaurant where the food was also excellent.
During our stay we took a few trips; we went to see the turtle sanctuary and hold a one day old baby turtle before they were released into the sea; we had a day trip to Galle, stopping off to see a beautiful Buddhist temple, a moonstone mine, a ride on a glass bottomed boat, Galle Fort and the mask museum and we went to an inland waterfall and fresh water plunge pool, stopping at a tea plantation on the way. We had an excellent time on each occaision and our 2 year old loved riding in the Tuk Tuks.

Many thanks to Rohan, Karen, Sanka, Chuminder, Danushka and Nadeesha for making this such a brilliant trip - we'll be back :-)

We stayed at the Shangri Lanka Villa for 2 weeks at the beginning of October for our honeymoon. It really can be described as true paradise.
We arrived at Colombo to find our driver waiting for us (arranged by Karen) and proceeded through rush hour traffic. Despite the "different" driving style, Hamar made us feel very safe and also very welcome. We also received a call from Karen, asking us if we wanted dinner on our arrival - a definate yes after our long flight.
On our arrival at Shangri Lanka Villa, we were warmly welcomed by Karen and shown to our room (room 3 on top floor) (where our bags were waiting) which was stunning. Spotlessly clean, very spacious, well equipped and with a view to die for. We were promptly served with the most wonderful meal, which set the food standards for our whole stay and made our mind up for us, as to where we would eat for the duration of our holiday. We would especially recommend the giant prawns - exquisite.
We had 2 tours during our stay - 1 to Yala National Park where we were lucky enough to spot one of the ever elusive leopards (along with glass bottomed boat ride, lighthouse visit, temple viewing and Galle Fort) and 1 to Kandy (along with elephant ride, elephant orphanage, botanical gardens, tea plantation, pineapple plantation, culture dance, tooth temple and shopping). Both were organised by Rohan but we were driven by Hamar, who was excellent during both trips. We had various stops en route at some wonderful places and any time we wanted to stop, he would do so happily. It's lovely to know you're going somewhere because its good, not because the driver is getting commision or because its a "tourist" place.
The pool is stunning, no fighting for sunbeds, massage therapies available on request and the whole Villa is spotlessly clean. Tea, coffee and water are all complimentary, as too is use of a laptop/internet (a lifesaver for us as we were able to use Skype to see our daughter). We also borrowed various CDs, books, DVDs and board games during our stay.
The atmosphere at Shangri Lanka Villa is like nothing I have experienced before. It is calm and peaceful, set in a stunning location (far enough away to be secluded but not too far that you are stranded) with exceptional service. The boys (Sanka, Chuminder and Danushka) and Nadeesha all work so hard and are very attentive but without being intrusive - drinks/food when you want them, tuk tuk at the ready and even shopping for local bits for me as it was known they would get them cheaper! We were also very lucky to have met some wonderful people staying at the villa at the same time as us, which made our stay even more perfect.
Many thanks to Karen and Rohan for the trip of a lifetime - we'll be back :-)

My partner and I travelled to Sri Lanka for a three week holiday at the end of September.

We booked our accommodation at Shangri-Lanka Villa directly through the website. Any emails sent to Karen and Rohan were promptly responded to.

We arrived in Sri Lanka in the early hours of the morning and were greeted at the airport for the transfer arranged by Karen. We were swiftly escorted through the airport and straight to our private taxi.

Upon arrival at the Villa were warmly welcomed and offered complimentary and tea and coffee. We were shown our room (Room 1) which was amazing. The main room was huge with floor to ceiling french doors, a super king size bed, a desk area and a day bed, there was also a small vestibule and a very large bathroom with a monsoon shower and a jacuzzi bath. Needless to say were super impressed with the room given the price!! The room had a terrace which led on to the pool. There were enough sunbeds and never had to fight for one.

For the first five days of our holiday we stayed at Shankgri-Lanka Villa and relaxed by the sparkling pool, breakfasts were provided when we wanted it rather than having to be ready for breakfast at a particular time. There are three young men who work at the Villa (Chirminder, Sanka and Danushka) who are very attentive and will serve your breakfast in the communal eating area or privately on your balcony. For breakfast the options are endless and you can ask for whatever you like. The Sri Lankan omelettes are particularly good!!

On our first day we arranged a massage with Nadeesha who provides the massage and complementary therapies on site which was very reasonably priced and was a great start to the holiday.

Whilst at the villa we arranged a tour of 7 days with Rohan which allowed us to see Galle, Yala, Kndy, Dambulla, Polonaru, Anuradhapura and Pinnewala. The tour was amazing and I have supplied separate reviews for each of the hotels that we stayed in along the way. The tour was seamlessy organised. We had a private van with a driver and tour guides at each stop along the tour. The tour guides spoke very good English and were very knowledgeable - particularly the guide at Anuradhapura who was very knowledgeable, not only about the area and the ancient site itself, but also about Buddhism generally. The tour was a great experience and I would advise anyone to do the same as it is the best way to really see Sri Lanka. Our driver (Haymar) was excellent, always stopping on request for good photo shots and pointing out exciting things along the way. Haymar kindly escorted us around the temple of the tooth during our time in Kandy and was happy to talkl about Sri Lanka generally and the sites that we visited. We were lucky enough to visit Anuradhapura on a poya day when local Sri Lanks took part in a procession and attended at the local stupa. Athough you should note that on a poya day you will be unable to purchase alcohol in many establishments - the hotel we were staying in closed the bar on this occasion, although I understand that some hotels within Sri Lanka may supply alcohol for international guests.

The tour was very reasonably priced and we were provided with a refund for the monies which we had paid for the room at the Villa whilst we were away - we were able to put the money towards the cost of the tour which made it even better value!!

When we returned to the Villa, we made use of the laundry service as we literally had no clean clothes left - the washing was returned promptly and even our socks were ironed!! My boyfriend has been very disappointed that he is not offered this kind of service at home!!

Whilst we had been away on tour, we had packed our belongings in our spare case so that they could be moved if anyone else had ben staying in the room in the intervening week. When we returned Karen gave us the option of staying in Room 1 or moving to one of the other rooms - it appears that they had purposely not taken on many bookings because the pool would be out of order for a few days. We decided to move to the top floor room (Room 3) for the last week of our which was almost like having another holiday again. The room was just as beautiful as the ground floor but had two double four poster beds and a normal shower rather than a jacuzzi and monsoon shower. The room did boast a small kitchenette with a sink and kettle etc although we only used it once. The was a beautiful view over the jungle and as there was no one passing by the room it was very peaceful. Although, if I was to say which was my favourite room, I would choose the ground floor room as I liked the fact that you could chat with other guests as they were coming and going etc.

Whilst at the villa we stayed in very often for dinner because the food at the Villa is superior to many of the local restaurants. We were a bit disappointed with Escoffier which is a relatively newly opened international style restaurant. I would however very much recommend Maali's restaurant which is a seafood restaurant run by Rohan's nephew - the restaurant was an international bistro style and the food wqas excellent - although it was by far the most expensive meal we had in Sri Lanka it was still super cheap by comparison with prices at home - we had the seafood platter which was delicious!

During the time we stayed at the Villa, the pool was being re-grouted for a few days - were had already been made aware of this at the time of booking - so we decided to venture down the coast road and stopped for lunch at Saman Villas. The hotel was very scenic and lunch was fine. We had planned to just spend some time sitting by the pool enjoying the view from the infinity pool but were advised that if you were not staying at the hotel you could not sit next to the pool - you had to sit up by the restaurant despite the fact that we had bought lunch - would have been happy to buy drinks throughout the day and the pool and hotel grounds were empty in any event - needless to say I would not stay there and found the staff to be very rude - this is not indicative of all of the hotels in Sri Lanka. All of the people we met during our holiday were lovely.

Local highlights include the turtle sanctuary which is a must do!! A\s the villa is also situated on the edge of the jungle, you will see lots of local wildlife, including bats, monkeys, water monitors etc. Karen does have three dogs on site who were very friendly and perfectly harmless. On occasion, when sitting reading on the balcony they would come and sit with us.

Rohan and Karen really looked after us during our stay, the food was excellent (we had suckling on one occasion and a seafood barbecue including fresh lobster. On many occasion we had sri lanka curry which was very tasty, the accommodation was always super clean and the boys who work at the villa were incredibly helpful and even agreed to change money for us and do some shopping for gifts at the end of our stay so that we paid local prices rather than inflated tourist prices. They really could not do enough for us - even teaching me how to make local coconut rotis - delicious!! The rooms were elegantly and beautifully furnished. We were also provided with a laptop to use free of charge during our stay.

We had a brilliant holiday and would heartily recommend Shangri-Lanka Villa to anyone considering visiting Sri Lanka.

I note that there have been previous reviews complaining that water was not complimentary but tea and coffee was - when we stayed there all of the bottled water in the room was provided free of charge in addition to the tea and coffee.

One thing which should be noted is that the mosquitoes are very active in Bentota, we were bitten more here than on any other part of the island and would recommend that travellers ensure that they bring plenty of deet with them.

I am happy to provide further information and tips.

Happy travelling!
