I have a mix of disappointment and a slight feeling I'm being unfair. Some of it is the fault of Lonely Planets, which is unnecessarily gushing about the place.
There are (from my count) only 6 rooms and only 2 (or maybe 3) of them have wooden floorboards.
Only the 2 rooms downstairs have en suite and they suffer from the creaking floorboards when the guests upstairs move.
Our friend had the junior double which advises in quite small print that it has a shared bathroom (with the 3 other upstairs rooms). When we questioned this, the manager went straight to the Agoda page to show us, so it was obviously not the first time it was a problem. The room was compact!
We were downstairs and the people upstairs sounded as though they were at dancing class. A request to the owner made no difference.
The room was OK but simply furnished. The double layer thin mattresses had seen much better days as had the pillows, The small grey 'white sheet' (which removed itself with any movement) and the pathetic, threadbare cover were unsatisfactory.
The bathroom was tiny but had 3 showers, all of which soaked everything. The mini frig had minimal supplies and even the water was chargeable.
On both nights of our stay we woke in the middle of the night feeling hot. It was unclear whether the A/C was playing up.
Really not good enough for almost $100 a night.
The breakfast was pretty good, especially the marmite and fresh fruit and tea but not the eggs or undrinkable nescafe.
The young staff were attentive and friendly. Management were a little surly and seemed always 'on the make'. We suddenly lost internet at 8pm on Sunday evening and when I went to reception I found the entire system powered off and bedecked with overnight covers. It took 3 more trip to reception to persuade the manager to get everything working again.
When we asked to pay by credit card they drew up a bill using an unreasonable exchange rate, perhaps to cover the card charge? We finally paid in USD.
Although many places within the fort are $200 plus there are a number of other guest house we saw during our visit that seemed to offer better, more friendly value than the New Old Dutch
