We decided to stay in this hotel after reading the comments in Lonely Planet and some comments in tripadvisor.
The hotel was empty when we were there, we booked by phone, and I would say price/quality is ok.. but not cheap.
Our room was in the basement, with two big beds with mosquito nets.
Bathroom was big, the electricity plug was very near the shower, so I was quite worried about being electrocuted while having s shower.... but nothing happened.
Everything was very clean, which is great.
Breakfast was good, with fruit, juices, eggs, .. typical continental breakfast in Sri Lanka.
Wifi worked in the room.
They say they have cable tv, but that is not as they say... You have to decide which channel you would like to watch and they will select it in reception, so you can not do zapping to choose your favorite channel...
It's a good hotel, but not as incredible as Lonely Planet says (LP in Sri Lanka is not the best guide, considering my experience!!!).

I have a mix of disappointment and a slight feeling I'm being unfair. Some of it is the fault of Lonely Planets, which is unnecessarily gushing about the place.

There are (from my count) only 6 rooms and only 2 (or maybe 3) of them have wooden floorboards.

Only the 2 rooms downstairs have en suite and they suffer from the creaking floorboards when the guests upstairs move.

Our friend had the junior double which advises in quite small print that it has a shared bathroom (with the 3 other upstairs rooms). When we questioned this, the manager went straight to the Agoda page to show us, so it was obviously not the first time it was a problem. The room was compact!

We were downstairs and the people upstairs sounded as though they were at dancing class. A request to the owner made no difference.

The room was OK but simply furnished. The double layer thin mattresses had seen much better days as had the pillows, The small grey 'white sheet' (which removed itself with any movement) and the pathetic, threadbare cover were unsatisfactory.

The bathroom was tiny but had 3 showers, all of which soaked everything. The mini frig had minimal supplies and even the water was chargeable.

On both nights of our stay we woke in the middle of the night feeling hot. It was unclear whether the A/C was playing up.

Really not good enough for almost $100 a night.

The breakfast was pretty good, especially the marmite and fresh fruit and tea but not the eggs or undrinkable nescafe.

The young staff were attentive and friendly. Management were a little surly and seemed always 'on the make'. We suddenly lost internet at 8pm on Sunday evening and when I went to reception I found the entire system powered off and bedecked with overnight covers. It took 3 more trip to reception to persuade the manager to get everything working again.

When we asked to pay by credit card they drew up a bill using an unreasonable exchange rate, perhaps to cover the card charge? We finally paid in USD.

Although many places within the fort are $200 plus there are a number of other guest house we saw during our visit that seemed to offer better, more friendly value than the New Old Dutch

Room Tip: Downstairs with en suite and noisy upstairs guest or upstairs with shared bath. Take your pick!

Stayed two nights
Rooms are like cool caves in the main photographed house. Sounds a bit strange, but that is how the dutch built. Air con works. Bathroom ok. Add 10% to any quoted price - tax. Safe place - low risk to belongings. If busy, i.e. supply less than demand then the issues mentioned in other reviews are risks. However, for our stay town was dead so we were in a strong customer position. Breakfast is simple but nice. Arab like coffee was good - weak coffee is the norm in sri lanka, except in muslim establishments. Their is no express bus to tangalla, despite what you are told. Minivan about 5000slr. Rooms might be a bit cave like for some, but book readers can sit at window and see plants and listen to the house boys clean the floors to plate clean like clean.

Be warned! Our attempt to stay at this hotel was without doubt the worst experience of our trip.
We rang a week ahead to book 2 nights in early Jan and were told that a room was available with aircon, TV, fridge and breakfast on the required dates. However, on arrival, we were told that no room was available at the hotel for the first night and they would put us up at another property. Whilst the owners of this property were charming and it was very clean, we were disappointed to find no fridge, TV or breakfast as promised, yet the management of New Old Dutch House wanted us to pay the same price as quoted for the hotel. (We then had to negotiate a new price). The next day, we had to walk to New Old Dutch House for breakfast and were told our room would be ready that day. When we arrived later to check-in we were shown a room the size of a match box with a shared bathroom and then were told that the price had increased to stay at the Hotel they demanded more. We promptly left and found our own accommodation for the second night. The whole drama was just a scam to get more money out of visitors to line their own greedy pockets. There are plenty of other clean & friendly places to stay. As seen from previous reviews they have been practising this scam for some time now.

Room Tip: If you must stay here, make sure you have confirmation of your room, facilities provided and agreed...

We spent two nights at this hotel, selected as it was in a great position within the Fort. Our experience was certainly a positive one. The twin room was one of the most comfortable that we stayed in whilst in Sri Lanka, and it was clearly clean and well maintained.

Breakfast was tasty and it was a real treat to enjoy it seated outside in the courtyard area right outside our room. The staff were helpful and although we were aware of the gem store located within the hotel we weren't approached to shop there once - contrary to others' experiences below.

We didn't ever sample the evening meals in the hotel as there were a good selection of restaurants to sample within the Fort, but I believe that eating in can be arranged.

The hotel looks fantastic inside, no shoes allowed so its very clean with varnished wood and tiles throughout. The rooms were superb, much more luxurious than the price and the breakfast was one of the best in Sri Lanka.
The only negative is we only stayed for one night!

We booked this place because of the good mentioning in the Lonely Planet, but this was a big mistake.

We made a phone booking and received a confirmation that they had a room for us during requested nights. When we some days later arrived to the hotel, they told us that no room was available at the main hotel, so they would put us in another of their places. We had to load our stuff in to a Tuk Tuk, and then they drove us to a very basic shabby home stay. For this they wanted the same amount as the main hotel. When we refused they told us everything in Galle was fully booked and we had 15 minutes to decide if we wanted the room or not. Of cause we refused, left and found out that there where plenty of other places available.

Later we met some other people who experienced the same, which makes us to believe that this is some kind of scam going on. (I asked for the managers name 3 times, and every time he gave me a different name)

This was also the first and only time we met unfriendly and unhelpful people in Sri Lanka.

So just stay away, so many better and nicer places in Galle.
