If you are looking for fine dining (surprisingly hard to come by in Galle Fort, it seems) and/or an intimate atmosphere you would not choose the Rampart, where the upstairs (covered) terrace is big enough to accommodate day-tripping groups for lunch.
But definitely worth considering when you just want a straightforward, good-value dinner, especially as they offer a wide choice, including seafood.
We went on a hot, sticky evening after the day-trippers had gone and Galle Fort was relatively empty again and found the Rampart fairly quiet - about 6 other tables taken. I asked the waiter to bring over a big electric fan I noticed standing unused (another was already running on the other side of the terrace) and it certainly made a difference.
Menu choice was huge, just about everything you could think of, including Sri Lankan, Oriental, and Western dishes such as pasta. We saw one large-ish group being served with big plates of lobster and salad and were quite tempted but not really that hungry in the heat, so I settled for mixed fried rice then banana fritters, my husband had prawn curry and rice then vanilla ice cream. The food was perfectly good, portions bigger than we could manage, and all round good value.
