In some ways, I'm tempted not to review this magnificently superb hotel. That's how great the place is: I don't want everyone to know and come spoil it! I write anyway because Lighthouse is downright my favorite hotel in the entire world (I've seen a lot of 'em, too...)! I write this because after numerous visits over the last three years, I consider everyone working there my personal friend. Nothing less. Let me summarize my overall experinece: Wonderful staff! Wonderful view! Wonderful food! Wonderful pool & spa!
If you're able to find fault at Lighthouse, may I suggest you migth be better off staying at home.

After a six day tour of the cultural highlights we arrived at The Jetwing Lighthouse in Galle. We had travelled for 10 hours and were hot and tired. As we climbed the steps of the wonderful staircase of the hotel our anticipation grew. We weren't disappointed. We were welcomed with the usual drink and warm fragrant towel to wipe away the grime of the 10 hour journey from the the Inheritance Tea Factory in Kandapola. As we said goodbye to our driver and guide from the previous six days we were shown to our room. The door opened to a mixture of dark wood and blue and white interior. Behind wall to ceiling dark wood doors lay the fantastic bathroom suite which was nearly as big as the bedroom. The blue shuttered doors opened onto a private balcony overlooking the Indian ocean and this was a standard room! After a quick shower and change we went in pursuit of dinner. We found the large airconditioned restaurant but opted to sit on the picturesque verandah overlooking the craggy rocks with the dramatic sound of the huge waves crashing against them. The food choice was excellent with service to match. This was our first night and we were really impressed however it was dark and we were tired.

After a very comfortable nights sleep we woke the next morning refreshed and ready to explore our new surroundings. Breakfast was as good and as impresive as dinner with dishes cooked to order on the verandah. We chose to eat outside and what a fantastic setting it was. The beach was wonderful and both pools were huge, warm and clean. the only drawback was that because of the rift tides it wasn't safe to swim in the sea which at times could be quite rough. Bet hey that's the beauty of nature and a timely reminder of the power of the sea.

We had seven nights at the hotel and experienced superb attention from all of the staff whether by the pool or in the restaurant. The hotel has a new manager Robert Claesson whose mission it is to ensure all of his guests have an experience that is second to none. He has weekly cocktail evenings to meet and greet all guests and it proved to be a good opportunity to meet some of the staff. Of particular note was Yakoub from the pool bar who was attentive to all of the guests, Randika from the restaurant and Warunda who was the restaurant manager.

in summary we had a fantastic stay in a wonderful setting with delicious food and attentive staff and i would definitely return here.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us such a detailed review of your stay. It is incredibly satisfying for me as General Manager to know that you truly enjoyed your time with us. I shall personally convey your kind words to all my colleagues at the hotel and especially to Yakoub, Randika and Waruna.

Hopefully, the highway should be completed very soon and traveling between Galle and other cities in Sri Lanka will be less time consuming in the near future.

It was an absolute pleasure hosting you and we eagerly await your next visit.

Sincerely,

We had the most fantastic rooms. More than anything else, I liked the Spa. the treatments were heavenly, professional and CHEAP in comparison to Europe. this is the REAL thing!

Breakfast Buffet, same each day. Dinner.... as we ordered A la Carte, a disaster. The food was mediocre, instead of being served all together, it came in batches, cold and tasteless. Seems the restaurant could only handle the Set Menu and not A La Carte orders. Twice in one night someone tried to enter my room. Although the hotel promised to look into the matter, by the time I checked out, not a word. I will think twice to stay at Lighthouse again. $250.00 per night when only 10 guest in hotel! Excessive for SL.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We are certainly glad that you were able to enjoy the many facilities offered at Jetwing Lighthouse. Your kind comments have been conveyed to our Spa Coordinator Nilangi and her team and I am sure your compliments will inspire them further.

Please accept our apologies regarding the late A la Carte orders. We are aware that A la Carte takes slightly longer than the set menu but it is in no way acceptable keeping a guest waiting for a meal which is unsatisfactory. The Restaurant Manager and our Executive Chef have been briefed and they will look into what went wrong on the dates of your stay and take whatever steps we can to ensure the problem does not recur. We are also confident that the new kitchen and restaurant system that is to be put in place after the renovation will drastically reduce service delays.

Someone attempting to enter your room is a matter we at the hotel take very seriously. Since all corridors have security cameras, we immediately retrieved the recording for review. However, we could not find any such intruder on the footage. We are very sorry this was not communicated to you before departure.

To investigate the matter further, our night manager stayed in the exact same room for two nights and experienced a similar “thud” on the door. We have determined that this was caused by the door being slightly loose and banging against the frame whenever there is a heavy gust of wind. The sound is very similar to someone suddenly pushing against the door from the outside. Our maintenance department has addressed the problem. We are very sorry for any distress caused.

Sincerely,
General Manager

The Lighthouse is slightly out of Gale town, but its an easy tuk-tuk ride so don't be put off by this. In fact the distance from the centre is one of the attractions of this hotel. The swimming pool leads straight on to the beach (it is possible to swim at certain times of the day) so its great to unwind. The views of the sunset from the terrace are really quite beautiful; crashing surf, distant fishermen's boats, delicious cocktails and bar snacks. The food is average for the price (although the breakfast buffet was certainly the best we had during our stay). The restaurant gets very busy, so service can be slow, especially is you sit outside. The cost of the whale watching tour arranged by the hotel is exorbitant. Arrange for your own transport to Mirissa Water Sport Centre and get on the same boat for $80 pp.

Room Tip: Ask for ocean facing

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your stay at Jetwing Lighthouse. We truly are fortunate to be located at such a beautiful location overlooking the majesty of the Indian Ocean, as well as in such close proximity to Galle and its world famous UNESCO heritage site.

Please accept our apologies regarding the slow dinner service. We are at present implementing extensive training programs for all our junior waiters and we are confident that the quality of meal service will only improve as we progress. I have also conveyed your compliments regarding the breakfast to our Executive Chef and his team.

The fixed price for Whale Watching from Jetwing Lighthouse for this season (November 2010 – April 2011) was $250 for two people. This is broken down to $80 per person, plus another $50 dollars for the vehicle which will take you to Mirissa and wait six to eight hours before bringing you back to the hotel. Vehicle charges will not apply if you have your own transportation. The additional $40 will be for other amenities provided by the hotel including a packed Breakfast, bottled water, towels etc. You will also be accompanied by the Hotel Naturalist Anoma, who is a leading Sri Lankan authority on whales, as well as a member of the original team to discover the migration route off Sri Lanka’s southern coastline.

Looking forward to being your host during your next visit to Sri Lanka.

Sincerely,
General Manager.

Worth the long transfer which took 2.5 hours at night and 4 hours in the day.
Staff very friendly and attentive.
Stayed half board and the set menu in the evenIngs was excellent. Breakfast was good selection. Hot food cooked fresh so took a bit longer.
Spacious rooms and excellent housekeeping staff. Left our safe open by mistake one evening and they came to find us immediately.
Sea very rough at end of april and whale watching is therefore not advisable, but this didn't stop our kuoni rep selling us the tour even though the skipper of the boat said the sea was too dangerous. This is kuoni's local rep's fault and not in any way linked to the hotel.
Took safari trip to tala which was excellent despite it taking 4 hours to get there. Stayed the night at tala village which only cost ane tar £20 per person. I would recommend this to avoid spending 8 hours in the car in one day!
Fab holiday and would recommend this hotel.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to leave behind some thoughts about your stay at Jetwing Lighthouse. I am sure you’d be just as exited as we were, in finding out that the new highway is scheduled to open during the months ahead. This will cut travel time to Galle from Colombo down to 70 minutes!!

I am glad you enjoyed your stay with us. Sri Lanka has amazing natural beauty and it is truly fulfilling to have guests appreciate our many natural treasures such as Yala, as much as we do.

We look forward to having you visit us again in the future.

Sincerely,
General Manager

Stayed seven nights at this hotel and could find no fault. My daughter had her wedding here and the staff were excellent in making this a marvelous day for all of us.
The food was of a very high standard and very reasonable, the rooms were excellent and were very clean and spacious.
The views were spectacular and the hotel was very well run with friendly and courteous staff who went out of their way to oblige.
The treatments in the Spa were heavenly and very reasonable, I would return for this facility alone.
I would recommend this hotel very highly and intend to make a return trip in the future.
