We spend two nights in the Sun House in our trip to Sri Lanka, and I would have remained there for at least a week.  The house has a very beautiful decoration, all in white and pale colors, full of antiques and Sri Lankan handcrafts and  pieces of art.  Every  room is different from the other  and full of nice details. It is eco-friendly every thing has been planned and carefully collocated.   The garden is full of birds and squirrels. Henri, the manager is very nice and friendly.  The house has being included in several books of art and Sri Lanka style and decoration.  The only (small) problem is that the place is little far for Galle old town (not walking distance) but always there are tuk tuks to move you around.  A good place to relax and forget the problems!

Our group took over the hotel for a wedding. The whole experience and atmosphere were incomparable. The hotel is converted from an old largely single storey house with bedrooms round a courtyard. The bedroom and bathroom were fine with tasteful furnishings.
The meals were served in beautiful surroundings and were magnificent. But best of all was the service and friendliness of the staff; ably overseen by the infectious Henri.
The wedding spilled over the road to their sister hotel and to the fabulous Count de Mornay island half an hour away ( owned by the hotel) where you have to walk through the sea to get there . The setting is spectacular and the hotel laid on a great buffet lunch.

We staid in the Sun House the first 3 days of our trip to Sri Lanka. And I wish we had staid more. Eventhough Sri Lanka is remarkably friendly and beautiful, Thesunhouse has its own standards.
It is beautiful, secluded, very well decorated- nice pool and wonderful food. And above all that a absolutely amazing and attentive staff.

We stayed there for one night during the Galle Literary Festival (GLF) 2012. This was one of the venues for the GLF evening events, so the atmosphere was quite busy. It's a colonial residence converted to a hotel; has a spacious sitting room with a library and a cozy bar area. The front garden was decorated with ‘fairy lights’ and with dinner tables for the GLF dinner and it looked great. The owner / manager (“Henri”) is outgoing and friendly and made us feel quite welcome.

We had a room with attached toilet/bathroom and twin beds with very colorful handloom bedding. There were lots of knick-knacks decorating the room, and that gave the appearance of the room been a little crowded and cramped. The walls of the rooms seemed to be quite thin as a lot of the outside noise could be heard in the room and we guess, vice versa! They have a small back garden, a nice place to have a drink in the evening, but the garden is swarming with mosquitoes! We didn’t have any meals there (but the Sun House had a stall at the GLF open air ‘café’ which sold snacks and they were quite good.

Will should try and visit it again, when it’s not GLF season to see how the place operates.

Hen, the hotel manager, makes you feel as if you have been friends for years, offers you insightful stops and restaurants along your journey and makes the stay casual (in a good way). The rooms are well designed, service is attentive but not over bearing and restaurant is a must for dinner.
Walking distance to the Galle Fort, Sun House is a great place to stay for a few nights. If you want more if a beach holiday, I would suggest you move to Thalpe afterwards.

We stayed for 2 nights and it was Brilliant experience. Very private and quiet. The food was delicious! I've never had such nice curry in my life. (I stay in an Asian-dominated part of south London). The breakfast was so nice and we had fresh fruit in the morning. Just pure heavenly food, I tell you. Now I'm on my way to f&@king McDonalds in London to get my brekkie :(

It's near the town, but very secluded due to the way the retreat is built. Everyone is friendly, Henri, (a brit) who runs the place- is very helpful and knowledgable and she has a wealth of information about the town. The who has lived there for so staff all speak English and anticipate your needs, which is such a nice change to Premier Inn and Travelodge! There is also wifi so I was able to download The Sun newspaper on my iPad. One of the reviews said don't leave valuables in the room... But that's rubbish. We left our passports and other stuff there that remained untouched. Tuk-tuk drivers are also immediately available in front of the hotel so they can take you anywhere you want. But make sure you haggle the fare as they will inflate it!!

Dislikes- one particular staff member indirectly asked for a tip. I'm not against tipping, but if you've done a good job then you won't even need to ask for a tip now would you? I usually tip 10% after a good service so i didnt like being asked for money. Anyway, I ended up giving 500 rupees to one of the staff and I said "share with the others". Whether or not he actually gave the others any of the money, I'll never know.
