“Walk by the sea”

Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications
Reviewed 9 June 2014

We stopped in Galle as we were on a 10 hour drive from Yala to Negambo.

We walked by the beach and also found a good restaurant in the area. The sea was quite rough so we couldn't go to swim. There are nice views though :)

We came on an incredibly hot day but still enjoyed the intriguing little side streets and shops, the ramparts and buildings dating from Dutch rule.

If you like walking around, this is the place. A small movie set like ambience. Lovely cafes , well restored architecture , and some very cool shops.

Had a great time walking around the old city. Best time to visit will be between 1-6 PM. Definitely visit the church, small homely restaurants (we visited lucky rock), the old hotel.

Tales of love & war surround the fortifications of the Galle fort. This fort has braved the storms & faced natural & man made disasters many times. It's presence today in this state shows that it is the icon of Galle today. The unseen hero of the strength behind this is the corals & rocks that surround the fort ramparts. It is sad to see that some visitors are deliberately damaging the corals. I have captured this on video but the authorities turn a blind eye to this even when the proof is shown. It is the Sri Lankan visitors who are behind this. The fortifications need to be checked on a regular basis & loose ends mended. It gives a sense of freedom when walking on the rampart after an early dinner on a full moon night.
