Unlike Galle new town, the old town has revived itself as an 'upmarket' location with Shops, restaurants and hotels priced to match! The 3 main road Lighthouse, Rampart and Church all have great must-see buildings and vistas. The fort walls keep back the ferocious ocean waves which are stunning too.Just be wary of locals selling 'old coins' - most are copies.... Great day out!

Lovely narrow and quiet streets to wander with little shops and cafes. Wide ramparts to stroll along watching the sunset. This is a world away from the chaos and frenzy of Galle beyond the fort entrance! Very welcome!

Makes sense to walk round early morning (6.30 to 7) before it gets hot but you also see so much beyond the tourist stuff. Dozens of very smart and cheerful children going to school, people sitting waiting to see lawyers around the square, weddings starting even at that time of day and if you go through the arch near the old barracks then you get to the fish market where the day's fresh catch is unloaded and sold. Later you can go on the ramparts at the clock tower and watch the cricket if it's on.
Towards late afternoon and evening there is entertainment near the lighthouse - snake charmers for one. The whole thing is varied and usually easy to walk along. You get splendid views out to sea, the Bay Area and the old town. Definitely recommended if you come here.

Watch what time you visit as we were leaving the same time the schools dismiss the children. It was utter gridlock and quite dangerous with mopeds, tuk tuks, minivans and taxis all competing for right of way.

Nice walk along the walls but quite a lot of people either begging or selling trinkets.

What may have been the hottest day in history, we took the cheats way out and kept cool in the car, and drove around all the sites, stepping out to take some amazing photos of the fort & really experience what it would have been like. Coupled with the knowledge of the boxing day tsunami, its an overwhelming thought to be standing in such a place.
