“Relaxing hotel in central location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2014

We stopped here for 2 nights after a cycle tour and it was everything we needed. Relaxing and a private courtyard with pool. We paid extra for a loft suite and that was worth it as these are large and private. Menu is not extensive but the food they do offer is really well done. Even if you want to eat off site you are very close to plenty of tourist eateries. We ate a "local" type restaurant and found the food to be good value. The staff are very accomodating.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and get a loft

We spent 2 nights here at the outrageous price of $320 Aussie per night thanks to an Easter surcharge. We had high expectations and were very disappointing. We had a pool side room, which is virtually a public room. People on a sun lounger at our front door, and people sitting at a table outside our only window. We felt completely exposed if in the room when people were around the pool.

The room itself was small and again zero privacy. You step out of the shower and you are next to the bed and in the middle of the room.

The restaurant was appalling. Breakfast had a selection of 2 choices, is incredibly limited. No hoppers, no buffet, no juice. Very disappointing and you would hope for so much more at that price.

We tried to eat at the restaurant but was told at 8.45pm the kitchen was closed! When we expressed our disappointment they said they could make us something. We were given the menu that again had ZERO choice. It was a 3 course set menu, all Thai food. It was either that $30 each) or nothing. Pathetic, and so rude that they can charge such huge prices and offer so little. One other thing is I asked for a water with breakfast. Again one would hope that a glass of bottled water would be free at that price. I was charged 150 rupees...in the street I paid 50 rupees, so the hotel is probably paying 30 rupees and has the hide to sell to a GUEST for 150!!!

Definitely go elsewhere.

The hotel is lovely - old style and renovated to resemble old world charm. The hotel is inside Galle Fort, at night it is lovely to stroll the streets after the tour buses have left the city. There is also the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful sunset. There are some lovely shops, great restaurants and eateries and nice bars.

The hotel had a very nice restaurant, wonferful food, a beautiful setting for a bar overlooking the pool, pleasant service, and the rooms are magnificent - particularly Grand Apartment 1 and 2. Many beautiful touches have been added to the rooms.

I would definitely recommend a stay at this hotel. Access to the beach is a short tuc-tuc away, so this location could not be better.

We absolutely loved the unique charm of this hotel, we felt back in the colonial time and loved our evening reading/ discussing in the courtyard surrounded by antiques, beautiful lotus flower bouquet and palm trees!

We first hesitated with the sleek "AmanGalle", yet after visiting it we prefered Galle Fort Hotel natural charm and laid-back atmosphere. Food was amazing...A must stay in Galle!!

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights while travelling around Sri Lanka on our honeymoon. We wish we had stayed longer! We just loved everything about the Galle Fort Hotel - the food, our room, the friendly staff, the location. It had it all!

My only complaint is that perhaps it is too lovely - thus attracting non-resident visitors to come in and wander around the pool and take pictures. This was a little annoying and I felt that non-guests should not be allowed to venture down to this part of the hotel.

Overall, however it was most certainly the highlight of our honeymoon :)

Lovely little boutique hotel right in the Galle Fort. The location is great if the Fort is all you want to see, though if you want to get around to nearby beaches and sites, Galle is a good place to base yourself. In the fortified 'city' itself it's a bit like being in a fish bowl. Only for tourists, of tourists, by tourists. It's small enclave and really charming, most of the restored houses are either hotels, restaurants or expensive boutiques. The hotel is appropriately done up and full atmosphere, however like many heritage properties, skimps on room facilities in the name of heritage. Which is a bit unfair considering the hefty price tag. No place in the shower to hang your towel or to put the toiletries! No place to hang your wet swimsuit - which you will have because the swimming pool that is set like a jewel in the middle of the property is so tempting and the best way to cool off in the hot afternoon. No tea/coffee facilities in the room. When you order room service- no proper table to place the tray on!
The restaurant serves great made to order breakfast. The staff was generally helpful. The atmospherics in the hotel are generally wonderful and attractive enough to keep you in! Keep time to wallow in the pool or read a book in the lovely verandahs.
The fort is dead at night so be prepared for an early one. Most restaurants are over priced. Crepology was a great little place and highly recommended.
