“True iconic hotel. A real gem with splendid service”
Reviewed 4 October 2013

Besides being an impressive historic hotel, we were treated like royalties from the minute we stepped in. Our butler introduced himself to us and for the remaining for days of our stay, we was actually available at all times and ready to assist in all kinds of tasks, from taking our pictures to opening for us the roof to get the beautiful views of the fort, to actually recommending tours and arranging everything.

The management made sure to arrange for daily personalized souvenir gifts to my daughter and my wife. Truly appreciated gesture.

The food was limited but of great quality.
We will return for another relaxing escape whenever we have the chance.

Room Tip: All rooms are great and unique

Dropped by the Amangalla late afternoon after visiting Galle. Afternoon tea service on the veranda was divine. In fact, I still dream about this hotel - it's like stepping back in time. Will have to stay here when I come back to Sri Lanka.

Amangalla’s history is born out of the early Dutch colonial period, and is located right in the heart of the preserved Dutch fort, offering guests a memorable and appropriately stylish stay in architectural splendour. It is surrounded by antiques, old prints, polished aged-floors, crisp white linen, pristine walls, rich mahogany, wood and rattan planters together with a gracious, welcoming and warm staff.
Had the most amazing lunch in Galle fort with such great service and throughly enjoyed! Thank you!

We spent three nights at the Amangalla, which was overall deserving of the buzz/hype. Here's a quick rundown:

Rooms: we stayed in a second floor suite overlooking the main road (with water behind). The soaring ceilings were hugely impressive and gave a majestic feel to already expansive rooms. Everything was tastefully furnished with a good mix of modern amenities and traditional decor. Bathroom was huge. A couple minor gripes: (1) the massive/luxuriously soft bath towels had stains on them on two occasions, (2) the building is old and not owned by Amangalla, so I imagine structural improvements aren't feasible. The walls, floors and ceilings are thin, and we could very clearly hear cleaning staff walking around/moving things in the upstairs room.

Service: all staff members were friendly and always smiling (but not in any odd/fake way). The butler is a nice touch and helped us with everything from spa bookings to car transportation logistics. The general manager greeted us when we checked in and thanked us when we left. Top notch service all around...

Amenities / spa: The spa is immaculate and luxurious. My wife had some massages and treatments done, which were great. The third generation barber gives a solid haircut. We were attending a wedding during our visit, so we unfortunately didn't get to try the interesting excursions offered.

Food: We had one dinner and multiple breakfasts. All were fresh and well prepared.

Other: The power grid is delicate, and electricity seemed to shut down periodically (although never for more than a few seconds). So our Bose alarm clock was always blinking with the wrong time. Wifi only worked 25% of the time, which was a little frustrating.

Wonderful 2 days spent in this Iconic, Colonial Hotel opposite the ramparts. Great Sandalwood Facial. Superb Butler service (Thank You Chanith). Perfectly juxtaposing the real charm of a bygone era with the style and slick service of a present day true 5 star hotel.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Amangalla Suite but the Garden House looks fab too. Difficult to choose between th...

We were on our honeymoon and stayed 2 nights here. We had already stayed in some very nice places, and this was going to the most expensive so far. The guidebook had implied it wasn't worth the money and I was wondering how the price tag would be justified. But I wasn't disappointed in the slightest and we spent the most amazing two nights here ever!

The trip was full of surprises. Firstly a very personal welcome from the Manager, Pietro, who immediately congratulated us on our marriage before taking us on a tour of the hotel finishing at our room where our butler (Dammika) was ready to greet us. There was Jazz playing in the room (and we could borrow more CDs from the library if we wanted to).

The room was gorgeous (and we had been upgraded to a Chamber). Impeccably furnished. Spacious and not cluttered. Six sets of shutters/doors onto our balcony which overlooked the garden and pool. Lovely bathroom too, with shutters above the bath opening out to the room.

That afternoon we had a lovely afternoon tea on the terrace and later went for cocktails on the balcony with great views of the town. We then went for a visit to the baths which we used privately (cold, hot, sauna and steam room – all complimentary).

On getting back to our room after dinner, we found a heart shaped cake for us – and even gluten free so my wife could eat it!

The next day we went on a cookery course in the morning (a wedding present from friends). We definitely recommend doing this. It’s done on a really beautiful and peaceful island out in the rice fields. A couple of the chefs from the hotel kitchen came along, as well as Dammika, and Lolita (a local who led the cooking). We had so much fun making all the different Sri Lankan curries and then ate them afterwards in a beautiful setting.

We spent some time by the pool in the afternoon – amazing service there as well. We chose one of the under cover cabanas with roof fan. The attendant immediately came along with six towels to cover the seats and for us to use, along with water. Beautiful pool and warm!

Extremely personal service in the restaurant too, with everyone so keen to please. And delicious food – particularly the perfectly cooked tuna steak.

Dammika (butler) took us for a walk around the fort on the second evening. A really nice way to experience it. I’m sure every room doesn’t get its own butler but it felt like we did!

Overall everything just felt so personal and thought out just for us, and this was probably the most important thing that made our stay so unforgettable. They say they want to make you feel like you’re at home – and they managed to do exactly that. We didn’t want to leave! Though it did feel we had spent much longer than just two nights there.

Some of the special touches:

- Even though they had 31 rooms, all the staff knew our room number without us ever needing to tell them. Also, they don’t make you sign bills as you go. So essentially everything just happens behind the scenes making you feel really at home and looked after.

- Being handed cold towels every time you got back to the hotel after being out.

- The offer of dining anywhere we wanted in the hotel (e.g. on the library veranda or by the pool). No extra charge. We in fact loved the verandah so much that we didn’t take them up on it.

- The send off – the manager came to say good bye and waved us of with another five or so of the team

- Just when we thought that was it, we were checking in our bags at the airport and realised they had labelled our bags with Amangalla luggage tags and our names and address!

Room Tip: We had room 26 which was stunning. It’s one of the chambers with a balcony (there are only 3 I beli...

After staying at Aman Hotels, I'm sorry to say, you'll become addicted to these splendid resorts and won't wish to stay at anywhere else. In Galle, it wasn't different. Amangalla is housed in an old building, firstly used as British colonial army garrison and later as the famous New Oriental Hotel, a griffe in Sri Lankan hotel tradition. Aman has totally refurbished the building, maintaining the full colonial splendor. Great décor, antiques all over the place, exceptional service and a lovely pool and spa. Sunset watching is a daily ritual from the third floor windows, overlooking the Dutch Fort and other colonial remains. And please, don't forget the champagne! Much has alrealdy been said about Amangalla and I'll only forward warm congratulations to Ms. Kavita Faiella, the Australian born deputy manager, to Mr. Indika, our marvelous buttler, and to Mr. Sujit, the gentleman in charge of our room's impeccable cleanness. You all made our stay an unforgettable moment.Thank you very, very much. We'll come back!
