After three weeks of traveling all around Sri Lanka, we decided to stay the last week in Negombo. After a bad experience with the way-overrated The Icebear, we looked for a better solution, and we found it in The Palace Hotel. A reasonable price and super friendly staff. Don't expect to get everything like food to be a top level, but who needs that in a place like Negombo where you have restaurants every 10 meters.
But this is more than compensated by the superfriendly staff (and espcially the smile of Devika) and the very comfortable rooms. Our five-year old son enjoyed the swimming pool on the roof.
And yes, John Cleese (with a tan) is working here during the night shifts!
Enjoy it!

I came to spend a night before my flight out of Katunayake airport. The hotel is situated right on the main street with all the other hotels and restaurants. However, my room smelled wet and it was all the way upstairs. Luckily, I was able to get a good discount. For one night I guess it is ok.

This place has had some bad reviews, but we loved it! We stayed for two weeks in room 209 nice room with two big beads. The staff was very nice, but......a bit like Fawlty Towers, so how can you not love it :) Great little pool on the roof, we sat there every evning just enjoying being in Negombo. It´s a very laidback place so don´t be in a hurry.

We arrived to Negombo on Friday afternoon without a reservation, everywhere was fullybooked hotel after hotel so we ended up in a shabby hostel which kind of ruin our expectations of a last night in style before leaving the country but couldnt find anything else!!
As we went out for dinner I quite liked the outside of the hotel and had some kind of feeling and went inside to ask. Luckily they had just one room available: 201, second floor. And we got a "deal" 6000SLR BB checking out at midnight the day after which turned out very convenient having a 2am flight.
Rooms wasnt amazingly decorated, nice and simple, pretty woodfloor, clean, bright, well equiped and with a newly tiled bathroom, not noisy considering is just in the "main" road and staff at reception was quite helpful so we went to the previous hostel and collected our suitcases to move to this place.
We were told about the pool and only then we realized how much our luck had changed for a last day. We enjoyed it all day long and only for the sunset there was some more people sharing the terrace. Pool is got superb views, it is on the 3rd floor over the ocean, sunset and town.
I thing it can be quite different if you spend your first or last night here: as we flew from Europe at first our impressions regarding general customer service in SL were awful but after 2 weeks one realizes what money can or cannot buy, they are so laid back they are horizontal!! :) So dont be in a hurry for anything cos regardless it isnt perfect the place is definitely good value in Negombo.
Breakfast was just ok as almost everywhere else to be honest: some toasts and jelly, eggs, fruit juice and tea or coffee, the manager looked completely lost even though there were only a few tables at first time in the morning! :D
Tuk tuk to the airport was 1000SLR we got it for 700.
Coming out the hotel 7 minutes turning right there is a boutique called Blue Elephant with the best authentic batiks, tablecloths and cushions we could find. Tell the owner to show you pictures of the process.

Room Tip: There isnt many and by the location I guess they all have the same views or lay out...

When all accomodation in Negombo (this hotel included) was booked out, its owner put me up privately with his family. The staff went out of their way to help make my stay truly memorable. It's great to hang out on the rooftop - the highest in Negombo -, which has a pool along with a bar. The rooms too were perfectly fine (I've seen two of them). As of 2012, I can definitely recommend this place, which - judging from the older reviews - seems to have changed a great deal.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms 301/302 - it's near the rooftop and pool.

The hotel was very dirty. I was surprised to see that the partition in the washroom in the lobby area was broken.. no idea how they want us to use the washroom ! The entire hotel had a bad odour. The room was filthy ... ants everywhere. The bathroom flush inlet was leaking, toilet fittings was badly done. No lock to the bathroom from inside. The door of the room had a 1/2 centimeter slit which was half closed by a black take. We were peovided with broken hangers. The list just goes on !

It was a very bad experiece and complete waste of money!
